Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse, Southend, Campbeltown PA28 6RU I have pleasure in writing to you with additional information regarding your stay at Harvey’s or Hector’s House. The cottage is situated near the Lighthouse at the southernmost tip of the Kintyre Peninsula. Please contact Mr Terry Smith on (01586) 830217 or mobile 07950 175691 in advance of your visit to let him know your estimated time of arrival. The key can then be collected from his home at the following address: Pennysaeroch Farm, Southend, Campbeltown PA28 6RF (please see enclosed map). The track to Pennyseorach Farm is single track, narrow and rough, and care should be taken when driving along it. Mr Smith will give you directions from here to the lighthouse, which is approximately 10 miles. Please note that the keys will be available for collection from 4.00pm onwards on the day of arrival. We would be obliged if the property is vacated by 10.00am on the morning of departure. There is a payphone in Hector’s House and the telephone number is (01586) 830234. As part of our health and safety risk assessment requirements, please could we remind you that smoking is not permitted in this property and candles should not be used. All bed linen is provided, as well as a hand towel and bath towel per person. Tea towels and bathmats are also provided. Please note cot bedding is not provided. If you are bringing your dog on holiday, please bring a lead, basket and your dog’s bowls. Please note that dogs are not allowed on beds or any of the furniture. You may like to bring an old towel to wipe muddy paws. Shops - There are two supermarkets in Campbeltown (Tesco and Co-op), which are open 7 days. There is also a village shop in Southend (approx 8 miles away), which is open 7 days except Wed pm. The village also has a hotel and tearoom. The nearest beach is 9 miles away. If however you happen to need something urgently during your stay, please contact Mr Smith who will be happy to help. Mull of Kintyre: Harvey’s House and Hector’s House Recycling Facilities Paper, glass and cans can all be recycled at the village shop in Southend (8 miles). There is also a large civic amenity site in Campbeltown (16 miles) on The Roading, and recycling points at the Tesco (1 Lochend Road PA28 6DL) and Co-Op (Longrow) stores. Local produce (some nearby suggestions) • The nearest shop is at Southend, and sells a range of groceries. There is also an excellent tearoom attached, with a fabulous range of home-baked cakes and pastries. • Sample the award-winning Campbeltown and Mull of Kintyre cheddar cheese, widely available in local stores in the Kintyre peninsula. • There is plenty of local seafood in the region, with Scotland’s Seafood Trail following the road around the Kintyre peninsula down to Campbeltown. The website www.theseafoodtrail.com is well worth a look if you are keen to try some of the local restaurants. • Local smoky whiskies abound, with the Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown offering guided tours of its distillery and tastings of its 3 single malts produced on site. (01586) 552009. • There is a regular farmers market in Campbeltown held on the first Saturday of every month in the Royal Hotel yard from 10am to 1pm. • Dunvalanree Hotel is on the road to the lighthouse and offers a menu sourced as far as possible from fresh, local produce; tel. (01583) 431226. • The Argyll Arms Hotel in Southend also serves a good range of bar meals in a nice restaurant; tel. (01586) 830622. Cycle Hire The nearest cycle hire is available in Campbeltown but visitors are also very welcome to bring their own. The area is on the national cycling network and so many good routes are easily reached, apart from the very steep hill to the property itself! Roads are particularly quiet in the Mull of Kintyre, which make for ideal family cycle trips. Public Transport CityLink run a bus service from Glasgow to Campbeltown 3 times a day; see www.citylink.co.uk for further timetable details. West Coast Motors then run a bus service (numbers 400 or 444) to Southend around 7 times a day (www.westcoastmotors.co.uk). Many people prefer to avoid the long driving times and choose to take the car ferries from Ardrossan to Arran and then Arran to Claonaig. See www.calmac.co.uk for more detailed ferry information. Local walks Beach and coastal walks abound directly from the property, and Southend has a lovely sandy beach. Nearby Borgadale Glen also hosts some strenuous walks for the fit and brave! The Kintyre Way, a long distance path from Tarbert to Southend, has also just opened. The walk from Southend to Machrihanish is tough and long (17 miles) but offers beautiful and rewarding views of the peninsula en route. Please be aware that cancellation insurance is not included in the cost of your holiday and should you have to cancel for any reason a refund (less £30 administration fee) can only be made if the National Trust for Scotland is able to re-let the accommodation for the period concerned. If the Accommodation becomes inaccessible due to bad weather the National Trust for Scotland will take all reasonable steps to inform you and to offer an alternative National Trust for Scotland property.
