Notes for converting fractions, decimals and percents
Fraction to decimal: divide the numerator (top) by the denominator (bottom)**
0.6

5
3.0 ! !
Example: à 5 3.000 =
So, = 0.6

Decimal to fraction: write the fraction like you say it in decimals
OR
put the numbers after the decimal in the numerator of the fraction and a multiple of 10 with as
many zeroes as there are place values after the decimal in the denominator.
Finally, simplify all fractions*.

=
Example: 0.055 =
1000 200
Percent to decimal: remove the percent symbol and move decimal two places to the left**
Example: 3.592% = 0.03592
Decimal to percent: move decimal two places to the right and add a percent symbol to the
end***
Examples: ! 1.254= 125.4%
0.3 = 0.33333…= 33.3%
!
!
Fraction to percent: first convert to a decimal and then convert the decimal to a percent (see
directions and examples above)**/***
0.83

Example: 1 à 6 5.00 à 6 5.00 ! !
So, 1 = 1.83 = 183.3%

Percent to fraction: 1) Place percent without % symbol over 100. Simplify fraction*
OR
2) first convert to a decimal and then convert the decimal to a fraction (see directions and
examples above).
Note: if the percent does not have a decimal or fraction in it, it is easier to place that number
(without the % symbol) in a fraction with 100 as the denominator, and simplify*.

OR 19.2% = 0.192 =

NOTES:
*Simplified fractions may NOT have decimals or percents in them.
**Decimals and percents can only have the repeating symbol AFTER the decimal
***Percents CAN have decimals or fractions in them
