Congratulations to our weekly basketball teams that made it into their Grand Finals and wishing you all the best in your respective games on Saturday, and great work by the rest of our teams as we come to the end of the current season. From the School Sports Captain Hi I’m Bailey B and I’ve been given the role of Head Sports Captain for 2016. I’m a soccer player and am currently playing for Eastern United Seniors in Athelstone. Playing soccer is not the only sport I enjoy, Tyndale have a variety of excellent sports that I always love playing. I want to encourage fellow Tyndalians to try out for sports so we can put forward our best teams and perform to the highest possible standard. The main event that everyone gets excited for (including me) is Heathdale. This year I plan to help out the younger kids in finding sports for them to play. FIFTH BUSINESS THEATRE COMPANY Our focus in Term 2 and 3 will be a devised piece workshopped in a similar way to our Summer Stage School programs with a performance on Friday 23 September. In 2012 we began with ‘A Night On Broadway’ and then our second adventure in 2013, ‘Revolution’. In 2014 we looked at the influence of technology in our lives and in 2015 our theme “Break Out!” explored new ways of expressing ideas in a variety of art forms. 2016 will bring a new, vibrant theme that will allow students to develop skills, explore ideas and present their creation in an exciting performance! Following on from the outstanding success of “!3 – the musical” performed in January this year, the Fifth Business Theatre Company Youth team will once again present a musical in the summer. Our Term 4 and Summer Season focus will be the creation and production of another vibrant musical. Auditions will be held on Saturday 24 September and the first workshop Saturday 1 October. Term 4 will start on Saturday 22 October and conclude on Saturday 17 December. Summer Production Week will be Monday January 9 to Sunday 14 January 2017. We will run 9am to 5pm rehearsals Monday to Saturday with performances in the evenings of both Saturday 13 and Sunday 14. FBTC is flourishing and we invite you to be a part of this growing, vibrant theatre community. For further information send an email to info.fbtc@ tyndale.sa.edu.au . Following is an interview that took place at Senior School Assembly on 7 April 2016 between Matt Howard (Sports Coordinator) and Lachlan P. How did you find out that you were going to be playing your first senior game? Lachlan: I was at the club prior to Round 1 doing extra skills sessions with the Senior Coach and he called me aside and said “have you told your parents you’re playing yet” and I had no idea and it was only a week before the first game and I couldn’t tell anyone before the game due to the code of silence. What did it feel like just before the siren went to start the game? Lachlan: It was pretty daunting, there were 5500 people there - I just tried to focus and get an early touch and play the game. You’re one of the youngest players to debut for the Norwood football club. Is this true? Lachlan: There are a very small number to have debuted at 16, not sure of the exact number. How many games have you played now and against who? Lachlan: I played Port first - they’re our arch rivals and I hate them even more now! Then we played North Adelaide and got thrashed by 10 goals so I won’t talk about that! How many games are you expecting to play this season in the senior competition? Lachlan: Hard to say - I’ll play as many as possible, I’ll play like my life depends on it and give it my all. Are you looking to get drafted to the AFL? Lachlan: I’m a mad Crows supporter so Crows, or maybe Collingwood, or anywhere in Melbourne or any of the big teams. How do you balance playing football and doing well at school? Lachlan: It’s not an easy job when everyone else is mucking around in class and you gotta put that aside and get the work done, and I stay back after school sometimes and smash out a couple hours homework after training, It’s not easy but it’s gotta be done. What can we do to support you? Lachlan: You guys do enough to support me and my family and friends are great too. JUNIOR SCHOOL | P. 8282 5117 YEAR 2 EXCURSION In Week 8 the Year 2 classes visited the Tea Tree Gully Heritage Museum. In History this term, we have been learning about how changes in technology have changed daily life. It was interesting to see some of the things we have been learning about, in real life! Students were able to play some old fashioned games, use a washing board to wash clothes, and have a look at how people lived over 100 years ago. It was a really great morning! Denise Lediaev Year 2 Teacher Tyndale Christian School | 50 Fern Grove Boulevard Salisbury East | P. 8250 7655 | F. 8281 7951 | www.tyndale.sa.edu.au 4 JUNIOR SCHOOL | P. 8282 5117 YEAR 4 SLEEPOVER “On the Friday of Week 8 all of the Year 4 classes gathered together in the Roy Magor Hall for our annual sleepover. Parents dropped off many excited students ready for a night filled with fun, games and laughter. After setting up their beds and going through some housekeeping, students rotated through activities including spotlight on the oval, photo booth fun and Lego creations. We enjoyed tiny teddies and apples for supper, followed by a hilarious bedtime story read by Mr Holmes. This year students (at least the ones who hadn’t already fallen asleep) watched the movie “Paper Planes” into the late evening. This helped set up our paper plane flying competition in the morning after breakfast. Parents picked up students still buzzing with excitement at a wonderful experience had by all. A huge thankyou to all staff involved. Each year it feels like the sleepover keeps getting better and better.” Tim Wilson Year 4 Classroom Teacher and Curriculum Coordinator YEAR 5 CAMP On Wednesday 6 April, 85 very excited Year 5 students arrived at school ready to go to camp. They were loaded on the bus and travelled to El Shaddai camping centre in Wellington on the Murray River. The students rotated through a number of activities including raft making and canoeing on the river. They were challenged on the giant swing, the vertical challenge and rock climbing. Students enjoyed trying to shoot targets and soft toys with a bow and arrow and working together as a team to complete challenges. They braved the cold to have free time in the pool, met some friendly reptiles and played space ball. At night the students participated in Minute to Win It activities. This included the ultimate grand final where students found jelly beans in a bowl of baked beans without using their hands; and get an Oreo from their forehead to their mouth by only using the muscles in their faces. The students and teachers did not go hungry with delicious food being served six times each day. Everyone had a great time and the students have memories that will last a lifetime! Having Easter a few weeks ago has made me think more and more about God’s grace. Mercy alone is difficult enough for me to get my head around but grace goes above that. The definition of grace alone is very remarkable. Grace goes above mercy, above being pardoned for one’s wrong doing, above clemency. I like to picture grace by thinking about someone who is in debt and the judge comes along and says you deserve to be put in prison unless you pay your debt but Jesus not only pays your debt but gives you more. Jesus took our pain and bore our sufferings so we could have a relationship with him. I can’t understand why some people decide to refuse that. 2 Corinthians 12:9 says “And he said to me, My Grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness”. Mercy alone we do not deserve, but Grace is more than we could have ever needed. On top of giving us a second chance He calls us into a relationship with Him. PROBLEM SOLVING IS A LIFELONG STRATEGY | P. 8282 5118 MIDDLE SCHOOL PURPLE PICNIC AND SPECIAL ASSEMBLY to support and promote Autism Awareness during the month of April. We were very privileged to participate in an Autism Awareness event and to raise $410 dollars to donate to Autism SA. Middle School students joined in a picnic with a purple theme during lunchtime and afterwards at assembly heard from Peta and David - speakers from Autism SA. Mr Jones interviewed Tim, who very bravely shared about his journey when he was first told about his autism diagnosis. Each of our Year 6 and 7 classes prepared and presented an artefact that helped explain an aspect of autism. These artefacts will be on display in school foyers over the next few school weeks and will then be donated to Autism SA. Middle School staff would like to thank the Year 6 and 7 teachers for their artefacts, the canteen and Café for opening early and the Zone staff and students Many a former student will know that I for our picnic love posing riddles or problem solving decorations. questions. Now the easy answer to Most importantly thank you to our why is that they are fun time-fillers. school families for their kind donations But I see them play a more significant and to all the students who organised role in a child’s development. Neil such great picnic lunches - purple deGrasse Tyson once spoke on the topic cupcakes, rugs, cushions, champagne of problem solving and said “the act of glasses - as some very learning how to do the math establishes extravagant picnics were a new kind of brain wiring in your mind, organised. a kind of problem solving brain wiring. Wendy Jolley So it’s not about what you learn, it’s Deputy Principal Middle School about what methods, tools, and tactics you have to develop in order to solve the problem that you may never see again for the rest of your life. But you will see other problems where these methods and tools will become immensely valuable to you.” So while the problem itself may never ‘be of use’, the skills learnt in solving that question are such that can be applied elsewhere and are lifelong strategies for other problems. To demonstrate this, I leave posing this question that could be discussed with your family: At a party, everyone shook hands with everybody else. There were 66 handshakes. How many people were at the party? Ken Abdy Mathematics Curriculum Leader Tyndale Christian School | 50 Fern Grove Boulevard Salisbury East | P. 8250 7655 | F. 8281 7951 | www.tyndale.sa.edu.au 6 SENIOR SCHOOL PREFECT PERSPECTIVE by Sara C The 2015 Kenya mission trip changed my life. For those who are planning to go this year, next year or anytime in your life I strongly encourage you not to think twice about going and just go because trust me you will come back feeling inspired. Not only do you get to create the best bond between your teachers and classmates but you also get to grow friendships with the beautiful African people that you meet. When the last day came I began to get emotional because I knew that my adventure was sadly coming to an end. It was not until this moment that I realised making a change in someone else’s life can have an impact on them massively. Every Kenyan person I met, was not just occasionally happy but they were internally joyful for who they were and what God had given them in life. I have everything and still complain but for those Kenyans even though they may have little they still gave you a reason to smile, which was why this trip changed my life and it is why it can change yours. | P. 8282 5119 CONGRATUALTIONS “We want to celebrate the achievement of Matthew J (Year 11), who was recently awarded the position of Youth Ambassador for the Friends of Australian Ballet (SA).
