What’s New
2015 was a year filled with developments for the Clinic: new services,
new treatments and regional exposure were the major accomplishments.
Here is our year in review:
International Accreditation
Since 2015, our lab has started working towards ISO15189: 2012 accredition. It is used by Medical
Laboratories to assess, review and develop their quality management systems for competence. This
international accreditation ensures that FCD effectively delivers and support patient care through the
quality and competence assessment. It is an important milestone for FCD to be ISO 15189:2012 accredited.
Innovative Lab
In the fast-changing environment of lab tests, we strive to ensure
that our patients always get the latest technology available. Here
is a list of the new tests which have recently started in our lab:
• C-Peptide test for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with abnormal insulin secretion
• Blood Culture test for the detection of micro-organisms in blood
• Homocysteine blood test for heart disease, stroke, arterial and venous thrombosis as well as atherosclerosis
• RA33 test for early detection of Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Auto Immune Antibodies Screening for detection of 17 autoimmune antibodies
• ENA profile for the diagnosis of connective tissue diseases
• C3 and C4 for the diagnosis and monitoring of acute rheumatic fever
• Urea Breath Test for detection of H Pylori
• Thin Prep Pap Test (pap smear) for cervical cancer
6
Urodynamics
Our Urodynamic Lab is available for a series of specialised
tests that help diagnose the functional problems of the
urinary system. The urodynamic evaluation is recommended
when a disorder of the function of the urinary bladder or the
controls of urine is expected.
The urodynamic test include one or more of the following
procedures:
•Uroflowmetry
•Cystometry
•
Electromyography (EMG) for sphincters
•
Pressure flow studies

Clinical Excellence
Doctor connect
2015 was a year where we had many
“firsts” for our Clinic.
An innovative
dysfunction
treatment
for
erectile
Dr Balbir Verma, Urologist at FCD provided a new treatment
to a patient suffering from sexual dysfunction. Previously
treated by medication, the patient was proposed vacuum
erection device which is a prostatic implant. The surgery
was a success and the patient is now able to reverse the
issue of erectile dysfunction at will.
Biolitec laser for high anal fistula
Much to the relief and benefit of patients, FCD introduced
Biolitic Laser for treatment of hemorrhoids and fistulas.
This treatment is very safe as it prevents the damage of the
sphincter with gentle removal of fistulas. Implemented by
Dr Abbasakoor, Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon,
this successful treatment is the most recent and innovative
one at FCD concerning Coloproctology.
Keeping up to date with medical advances and
progress.
With the aim to keep our doctors from different faculties
updated about the constant changes in medical practice, a
series of clinical meetings are held at the clinic on a monthly
basis. The doctors’ talks include an introduction on the latest
innovation/case and a presentation on the chosen theme or
technique.
The latest talk, a presentation on “Normal Pressure
Hydrocephalus – a treatable cause of altered
neurological status” was held on the 5th May,
presented by Dr Vikash Rambhujun (Resident
Medical Officer) and moderated by Dr Hemraz
Boodhoo (Neuro Surgeon).
Bariatric Surgery
EP Support program for cardiac patients
Those suffering from heart failure now have their own
support group where they can share their experience and
the everyday life challenges that these conditions imply.
The group that was launched in October is superheaded
by Dr Aparna Jaswal, Electrophysiologist from the Fortis
Escort Heart Institute in New Delhi – who travels regularly
to our clinic for pacemaker surgeries and consultations.
Code Blue Management Training
FCD implemented Code Blue Management Training in March
2016. The aim of this training is to provide standard guidelines
to Code Blue Team members for an organized efficient
response, to a cardio pulmonary arrest situation within the
clinic. As at date, approximately 33 nurses have already been
trained. Staffs are required to understand the protocols
and procedures where they can effectively intervene in case
an emergency situation arises. After 3 weeks a procedure
performance check list is distributed amongst those who have
undergone the training to ensure that they have grasped the
whole concept of Code Blue Management. This evaluation
ensures that each member manages the situation efficiently
on site and are well aware of the procedures and protocols.
To ensure quality care during Emergency situations, every 3
months a session on Code Blue Management is provided to all
Code Blue Team members.

The Emergency Room : On the alert 24 hours a day (The

Fortis

Emergency
Department can become a hectic place very
rapidly. The department is operational 24
hours a day, all year round. Mr. Izaad Pondor,
Ambulance in Charge of this extremely busy
place; works with 46 staff members ranging
from qualified ER nurses, ambulance nurses
to drivers and porters.
With as much as
2200 patients per
month, ER can be a
chaotic place where
effectiveness and
rigour are key success
indicators.
The need to prioritise
During a shift, the staff on duty sees dozens of patients with wide range
of symptoms and injuries. They need to be able to identify serious or
life-threatening symptoms, for example heart attacks, strokes, road
traffic accidents and act promptly. Priority is given to patients with the
most serious conditions - a process called triage.
The facilities and services
Patients may attend the Emergency Department on their own or in
ambulance. FCD provides an Advanced Cardiac Life Support MercedesBenz ambulance that is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The
ambulance is always on standby to meet any emergency situations. On
average, the FCD ambulance conducts up to 7 emergency trips per day.
three Ambulances – two at Floréal and one at Fortis Clinique Darné North.
ER has a crucial role to play in saving lives during emergency situations.
The department comprises of a plaster room, a procedure room and 3
observation rooms. The premises are equipped with “state of the art”
equipment for an emergency intervention.

Ambulance in charge
My Role
My role cannot be defined
in one word, as I do so
many
different
things.
As Ambulance in Charge,
I am responsible of the
overall
supervisory
work
for ambulance, driver and
ER nurses, as well as clinical
supervision on weekends. I
oversee the proper operations
of the clinic in the absence of
the Chief Nursing and Deputy
Chief Nursing.
I am also in charge of the international patient repatriation by
ambulance. In addition to these, I help out with Marketing for
events coverage, the validation of medical supplies, as well as the
catering for staff.
How I got there?
I was recruited as a student nurse in 2003 where I worked on Level
4. Three years later, I got my registration as general nurse and
worked in Operation Theatre, Level 2 and Level 3 until mid 2009.
From there, I shifted to ER where in 2014 I was promoted to Deputy
Head of Department and in charge of the Ambulance. Since 2015,
I have been promoted as Head of the Department.
My typical day at work
A new service to enhance patients’ experience at FCD
Your Comfort, Our Priority
We understand that no one likes or chooses to spend time in
a clinic. To ensure that all the needs of the patients are taken
care of; FCD introduced Floor Coordinators on each ward in
August 2015. Acting as the link between the patient and all
services of the hospital, the floor coordinators attend to all
the queries of our patients to ensure that all their concerns
are addressed promptly. For example, they liaise with the
Billing Team for an efficient discharge process along with
the Medical Team for any medical issues or with the Dietetics
Department for any concerns on food.
Floor Coordinators are a recent addition to the Patient
Welfare Team; all part of Patient Care Services.
The position was implemented in 2015 and the service is
provided by:
• Brinda Taukoordass - Floor Coordinator Level 2
• Sara-Jane Rouget - Floor Coordinator Level 3
• Neelam Babooram - Patient Coordinator Level 1
• Caroline Marie - Patient Welfare Officer Level 4
There is no really such thing as a typical day in the ER. My day starts
with planning and organisation of the day’s schedules. I make sure
to welcome each patient individually to understand their concerns,
which in turn helps me to proceed to triage and deal with all the
procedures of admission and discharge.
With my busy schedule, I always find time for meetings, trainings,
counselling my staffs, as well as replying to patients’ queries.

Special Feature
First in Pediatric Urology in Mauritius
Dr. Kevin Teerovengadum, Pediatric Surgeon at Fortis Clinique Darné recently performed two complex interventions in pediatric
urology that were carried out for the first time in Mauritius. The first intervention was on the ‘urethra posterior valve’ on a baby of
40 days that weighed only 3kg. The condition is an irregularity of the canal transferring urine from the bladder outside the body,
which is usually obstructed at birth. Babies with this condition were diagnosed after a prolonged time and this normally resulted
in damaged kidneys. A ‘vesicostomy’ was carried out where the canal was unblocked during the first intervention itself. Our little
patient spent only 2 days at FCD after the surgery and he is absolutely fine.
Another First in Mauritius, this second innovative surgery was carried out on a girl of 6 years diagnosed with vesicoureteral reflux.
It is an abnormality where the urine returns to the kidney, causing urinary infections. Previously considered as a complex surgery,
the patient was required to stay at the clinic for several days. With the ambulatory surgery where an ‘endoscopic technique’ was
used, the child was able to return home on the same day after her intervention. The surgery lasted only for half an hour and it was
a success. Since the surgery, the child not contracted any urinary infection.

Aphasia
Aphasia is a condition that affects a person’s ability to
communicate (express and understand language, both verbal
and written). Aphasia typically occurs suddenly after a stroke or
a head injury. But it can also result from a slowly growing brain
tumour or a degenerative disease. The severity of communication
handicap depends on the site and extent of brain damage.
Once the underlying cause has been treated, the primary
treatment for aphasia is speech and language therapy that
focuses on relearning and practicing speech and language skills
and using alternative or supplementary communication methods.
DID YOU KNOW?
Family members often participate in the therapy process and
function as communication partners of the person with aphasia.
