LUU Medieval Society The Leeds University Union Medieval Society was formed in 2013 in order to promote a thriving community of medievalists in the University and City of Leeds, as such, we warmly encourage anyone with an interest in the Middle Ages to join. We are dedicated to building a strong interdisciplinary community; so whether you study, teach or are just really interested in the Middle Ages: this is the Society for you. Special Events Programme To celebrate the foundation of our society, we would like to welcome all delegates attending IMC 2014 to a series of fun and informal activities that will be taking place in and around the Leeds University Union Building during the IMC. Medieval Board Games SUNDAY 06 JULY: 16.00-19.00, LEEDS UNIVERSITY UNION: OLD BAR Arriving early at the IMC? Join members of Medieval Society in the Old Bar for popular medieval games including Nine Men’s Morris, Alquerques, Fox and Geese, The Philosophers Game and more. Instructions will be provided, so no prior knowledge is required. Come to test your skill, try your luck, or just meet new friends! Medieval Film Night SUNDAY 06 JULY: 19.00-21.00, LEEDS UNIVERSITY UNION: FOYER Following the Medieval Society Games session, there will be a film showing of The Secret of Kells in the Union Foyer. The Secret of Kells is a fictional account of the creation of the Book of Kells in 7th-century Ireland. Part of a new wave of serious animation films seeking to shake off the idea that animation is ‘just for kids’, The Secret of Kells depicts a world steeped in the beautiful non-representational art seen in manuscripts of the period. The characters at once live apart from and in tandem with nature, custom, and the Old Religion, and struggle to create works of beauty while under constant threat of Viking invasion. The film has earned a host of accolades, including a 2010 Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. Pub Quiz MONDAY 07 JULY: 19.00-21.00, LEEDS UNIVERSITY UNION: OLD BAR Come wind down after your first day of sessions with the first annual Medieval Society Pub Quiz! The LUU Medieval Society will re-imagine the traditional British Pub Quiz by asking IMC delegates to form teams and answer questions posed by the Medieval Society quizmaster. Pool your knowledge with your colleagues for quiz topics such as: Name the Century, Latin Translation, and Match the Illuminations. Teams will be competing for everlasting glory and a small prize. 270 TUESDAY 08 JULY, 19.00 - 21.00, LEEDS UNIVERSITY UNION: FOYER Come try the new presentation-style craze that is sweeping the nation! The Medieval Society will be hosting the first-ever Pecha Kucha night at the IMC, and we need some brave volunteers! Originating in Japan, Pecha Kucha offers an opportunity to think about and present your research in a completely different (and fast-paced) way. Each presenter will show twenty slides for twenty seconds each (totalling a presentation time of 6 minutes and 40 seconds). If you would like to take part then please submit your slides along with a title and brief outline of your topic/argument to [email protected] by the 1st of May 2014. There is only space for eight to ten presentations. If you have any other questions please contact us at [email protected]. Medieval Film Night (The Return!) WEDNESDAY 09 JULY, 19.00-21.00, LEEDS UNIVERSITY UNION: FOYER Looking for an alternative to the IMC dance? Or just want some down time before kicking up your heels? Join us in the Union Foyer for a screening of Les Visiteurs. A senile sorcerer accidentally transports a medieval nobleman and his squire to contemporary times. The nobleman enlists the aid of his descendent to try to find a way to return home, all the while trying to cope with the cultural and technological changes distinguishing his time from ours. This film sets out to amuse and succeeds in being intentionally hilarious, the perfect way to unwind after a day of listening to papers. Medieval Inspired Games THURSDAY 10 JULY, 16.00-20.00, LEEDS UNIVERSITY UNION: OLD BAR You’ve made it to the end of the IMC, now what? Medieval Society will be hosting a session of medieval-inspired games such as Shadows Over Camelot, Cathedral, Settlers of Catan, Kingmaker, and many more. Come relax with a drink and have a game before heading dancing the night away at the IMC Ceilidh! Want to know more?
