Their Eyes Have Seen the Glory:
Art of the Civil War
Lecture by Stephen May
Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 8:00 p.m.
in the Town House
Stephen May is an independent historian, writer and lecturer about art, culture and historic
preservation. He has taken particular interest in preserving, maintaining and interpreting sites associated with American painters and sculptors and has a special interest in art history as seen in his articles in
Antiques and the Arts Weekly for which he is a featured writer.
He has written for many additional periodicals such as American Artist, American Arts Quarterly,
American Heritage, American History, Art & Antiques, Art New England, ARTnews, British Heritage,
Down East, Early American Life, France Magazine, Islands, MidAtlantic Country, Pennsylvania Heritage,
Preservation Magazine, Sculpture Review, Smithsonian Magazine, Southern Accents, Southwest Art,
Travel & Leisure, and Washingtonian; and newspapers including the Chicago Tribune, Christian Science
Monitor, New York Times, Washington Post, and Washington Times.
Their Eyes Have Seen the Glory: Art of the Civil War will survey the ways painters, sculptors
and photographers--North and South--recorded the conflict and the home front during the Civil War.
As May states in his article titled “The Civil War and American Art” in Antiques and the Arts Weekly,
“Artists, filled with anxiety and surrounded by the impact of strife, sought to come to grips with the horrendous conflict that photographers made so graphic for so many. American painters of this era worked
almost exclusively in landscape, portraiture and genre, with the former the predominant form.” The lecture will cover ways in which artists recorded the war on land and sea, the ways in which photography
brought images of battlefield reality to the home front, and how a French artist, who did not witness the
battle, created the finest painting of our Civil War. Artists to be discussed include Homer, Gifford, Bierstadt and many more.
The art and studio of John Rogers will be emphasized. In its May 1975 issue, American History
Illustrated magazine featured an article, “Sculptor for the Union,” that viewed Rogers’ works as legendary in representing the mood and pathos of the Civil War.

A Special Program: Saturday September 28 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
On Saturday, September 28th, the Society will cohost with Norwalk Association of Silvermine Homeowners (NASH) a special lecture by Bram Dijkstra titled:
Charles Reiffel: The Fate of a Silvermine Painter Who Chose Art Over Fame
If, as the art critic of the Los Angeles Times wrote in his review of the recent San Diego Museum of Art Retrospective of the
artist’s career, Charles Reiffel is “probably the best early modernist painter you’ve never heard of,” the trajectory of his career demonstrates the danger that stalks the artists who choose art over fame.
For during the decade between 1915 and 1925 Reiffel had established himself as one
of the most admired and well-publicized progressive American painters working in the
New York region. However, when, at the height of his critical success he discovered the
rugged beauty of the Southern California back country landscape and chose to settle in
San Diego. He rapidly lost most his East Coast fame, and, even while painting some of
the most powerful expressionist landscapes ever painted in the region, he soon descended into abject poverty and died virtually forgotten in 1942. In this presentation, the
work he did during the years in which he became president of the Silvermine Guild of
Arts will be emphasized. These works caused the critic Peyton Boswell to compare him
favorably to John Singer Sargent.
The speaker, Bram Dijkstra, is professor emeritus of American and Comparative Literature at the University of California,
San Diego. He is the author of numerous books on literature and the arts, including Cubism, Stieglitz and the Early Poetry of
William Carlos Williams (1969); Idols of Perversity: Fantasies of Feminine Evil in Fin-de-siècle Culture (1986); Georgia
O’Keeffe and the Eros of Place (1997); American Expressionism: Art and Social Change, 1920-1950 (2003); and Naked:
The Nude in America (2010). As curator, he has been responsible for several exhibitions relating to the work of San Diego
artists, including Belle Baranceanu: The Artist at Work, at the San Diego History Center (2006); Art of the WPA Era From
Collections of the San Diego Region (2006) and Masterpieces of San Diego Painting: Fifty Works from Fifty Years, 19001950 (2008), both at the Oceanside Museum of Art; and Charles Reiffel: An American Post-Impressionist (2012), at the San
Diego Museum of Art, which he organized and for which he authored the museum catalog essay.
Cost for the lecture to be held at the Society Town House is $15.00 per person. Checks should be made payable to
the Norwalk Association of Silvermine Homeowners (NASH) and mailed to: NASH, 115 New Canaan Ave., P.M.B.
731, Norwalk, CT 06850. NASH is a 501(c)3.
Diluted Debate on the Waterfront
Community squabbles have a way of flooding the public forum with torrents of rage that eventually subside into harmless
little trickles and then quietly dry up altogether.
That's been precisely the course followed in one of the most divisive issues in New Canaan history, fluoridation of the public
water supply.
About 55 years ago, emotions rose to a fever pitch. Debate verged on hysteria in any one of about half a dozen conflicting
views on the matter and lengthy public hearings were jammed with crowds exchanging bitter accusations, each suspecting the others
of dark ulterior motives. But less than a month ago, in the waning days of the State Legislature's session, a public hearing in Hartford
on a fluoridation bill attracted only about 20 people. There was only one speaker, it was all over in 10 minutes and there was no action.
Although the State did not enact enabling legislation until 1965, the addition of fluoride to public water distribution systems
to combat dental caries had been gaining support in many communities, including New Canaan, for several years.
Supporters claimed the chemical effectively promoted dental health and cited data indicating a sharp decline in tooth decay
among children in Colorado, where fluoride occurred naturally in water sources. Additionally, the Center for Disease Control hailed
use of fluoride as a “health success.”
The idea gained momentum in New Canaan, but, just as quickly and perhaps even more passionately, opposition forces
developed and the battle was on. The teeth of children in Colorado were turning yellow, critics charged. Bitter foes of the proposal
saw a “sinister communist plot” in the idea of piping chemicals into private homes. Some religious groups rose up in opposition, saying the fluoridation program would constitute “medication without consent” in violation of their beliefs.
Proponents of fluoridation were just as strident. Rejecting the program would be hard-hearted, they declared, akin to utter
disregard for public health and well-being, especially that of children.
Still others took more moderate stances, perhaps in hopes of compromise. The fluoride would go only to those consumers
in the public distribution system, they noted, and a large percentage of New Canaan consumers drew their water from their own private wells. And there were voices of doubt, even in the medical and dental professions. Some questioned the effectiveness of fluoride
in combatting dental caries and expressed concern that any
potential benefits would be outweighed by “side effects” harmful to general health.
So the arguments on all sides were adamant at
hearings and it was decided that a fair decision could be
reached only if the town meeting was “adjourned to the voting
machines” in a town-wide referendum. Maybe it was an exercise in futility, however, because Lee Glidden, president of the
New Canaan Water Company, announced that his board of
directors had agreed to fluoridate the water supply no matter
how the vote went.
His “defiance” turned out to be a non-issue. Voters
approved fluoridation by a wide margin. Water was
“fluoridated” in the filtering plant at the Oenoke Ridge reservoir. The tumult and the shouting was over, there never were
any studies to indicate which points of view might have been
Dr. Brown is shown where fluoride will be added to water main
most valid and the whole matter was soon all but forgotten.
Indeed, a half dozen years after water was fluoridated, an enterprising news reporter, Bill Guillotte, who was new in town
then, decided to see what all the shouting had been about. Over a period of several weeks, he drew water from kitchen faucets at
homes in various New Canaan neighborhoods and had each sample analyzed at an independent laboratory in Fairfield. Results
ranged from “over-doses” to traces that were hardly detectable and were reported in an Advertiser story headlined “Fluoride on tap?
Well, more or less.”
Now, more than a half century later, the local debate appears to have been much ado about little. With a reservoir too
small to warrant costly new filtration systems required to meet standards prescribed by law, the New Canaan Water Company ceased
operation. Aquarion, a British company, now owns the supplies and distribution systems serving most of Fairfield County and decisions are not really in local hands. The company says its water includes chlorine “for disinfection,” lime and sodium hydroxide to protect pipes and “could include fluoride to prevent tooth decay.”
Inconclusive arguments about the pros and cons of fluoride continue, however quietly, and State Sen. Joseph Markley,
Southington Republican, vows renewed efforts to repeal the Connecticut law that he says permits “use of public water supplies to
deliver medication.”
Now the public water supply is in public debate again, but the focus is on proposed rate increases and fluoride is not even
mentioned.

A REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT
As we come to the end of another glorious year of the New Canaan Historical Society I wish to submit
this report for July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013:
We had a very busy year which included some exceptional programs. First was Around the Cracker
Barrel with ‘oldtimers’ chatting about their ‘good ol’ days’ in New Canaan to the delight of the audience. We hosted the Rotary’s LobsterFest, an annual event, which was the most successful since its
inception. The Little Red Schoolhouse held its Open House. In October we enjoyed the pumpkin
patch on our great lawn which was cut short by Hurricane Sandy!
In November we opened a unique exhibit “Seeing Red: Little Red Riding Hood at the Historical Society”, selections from the collection of Peggy Rice. Catherine Orenstein, author of “Little Red Riding
Hood Uncloaked: Sex, Morality & the Evolution of a Fairy Tale” regaled the adult audience. Town
Players performed their version of “Little Red” on their Powerhouse Stage. The children were delighted by the performance of the WonderSpark Puppets as they presented “Little Red Riding Hood and
the Big Bad Wolf.” We concluded the exhibit with a program presented by the Wolf Conservation
Center as they introduced us to Atka, a beautiful white wolf.
We had a beautiful ‘Evening of Music’ presented by Maestro Aaron Rosand and his esteemed students at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, held at the Duncan’s lovely Modern home in Wilton. It was a great honor and opportunity to attend this excellent program.
We enjoyed the Civil War series of lectures including screen writer of ‘Copperhead’, William Kauffman, and music from the era by New Canaan Summer Theater, The Greatest Hits of the Civil War:
America’s First Professional Songwriters, and Simply Lincoln portrayed by Howard Wright. The final
‘piece de resistance’ was the Preview and Cocktail Party of the new movie, ‘Copperhead’, produced
by our program chair and her husband, Susan and Bob Bishop.
We opened two new exhibits in our Silvermine Room. They were Germain Glidden, Artist/Athlete
(Glidden was the founder of the National Art Museum of Sport), and The Knockers - on Paper, both
most interesting. We also opened two exhibits at the Gores Pavilion, Pedro Guerrero, Photographs of
Modern Life (Guerrero was Frank Lloyd Wright ‘s photographer), and Architects Revisited: A Second
Look at New Canaan Architects 1953 - 1983.
Selleck’s Corner Chapel and Cemetery has asked the Historical Society to take over curating this
important historic landmark. Their Board has presented this to the Society. It would join our curatorship of other off-campus landmarks, The Little Red Schoolhouse and Landis Gores Pavilion at Irwin
Park.
We enjoyed our social events, Docents’ Coffee, Valentine Tea, Donors’ Cocktail Party in January,
Volunteers Luncheon in May. Our Fund-Raisers were the Preview and Cocktail Party of the movie
Copperhead, a huge success, and the Ice Cream Social which attracted the usual enthusiastic crowd.
We again presented our colonial life educational program to over two thousand children from our area
schools. Also we have our summer Colonial Camps for children from five to ten. Eagle Scouts have
given a big boost to some of our projects.
The Annual Meeting program held in June was a fascinating presentation by the Butterworths and
their architect, Tom Smith, and builder, John Ulicki, about the preservation and renovation of the Benedict-Butterworth House, the oldest home in New Canaan.
I would like to thank the Board for its support and cooperation throughout my two-year term as President. I am very grateful. I have had a wonderful experience working with everyone at so many of our
wonderful events. Our programs this year were exceptional thanks to our Program Chair, Susan
Bishop, who brought them to a higher level! And thank you to all the volunteers who make this Historical Society so very special! And of course, a big thank-you to all the Donors whose generosity make
it all happen!
With you “in the Spirit”,
Prudence Parris, President

IN MEMORIAM
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to the following of members and supporters. Each had a special place at the Society.
Mildred Megrue Baehr, member since 1957 and honorary Board Member at the time of her death, Mildred was one of our most loyal and generous supporters.
The depth of her support is found in the article following on “Past Supporters and Looking Forward” in this issue of Tydings
Phillip Caldwell, member since 1994 actively attended our programs and we welcomed Philip and wife Betsy at most of our holiday teas. Through the Caldwell
Foundation he was a donor of the Society
Barbara N. Gilderdale, member since 1990, spent at least one day a week at the Society indexing and rehousing the Bukovcik collection of negatives which encompassed his years as a photographer for the Advertiser. Her dedication will be difficult to replace. A poet, she also leaves a collection of her poems in our files.
Donald Hunziker, member since 2001 also acted as an adviser for the Committee on Preservation of New Canaan properties. He was an attendee at meetings
and a friend with great interest in history and service to the Town.
Albert Knaus, member since 1993 was as a retired history teacher who was also an artist and photographer. He had a special interest in our art and photography
exhibits. Al donated his photographic skills to the Society photographing many events, including the Ice Cream Social. In our collection is a large framed photo of
the exterior of the Archival Addition building which he donated.
Elizabeth Ann Lane, member 1979 - 1992, a twenty one year member of the Society before moving to Redding, CT was especially appreciative of our stories of
New Canaan.
Karola Schuette, member since 2001 loved photographing New Canaan places and over many years recorded its history through these
photos, many of which she donated to the Society. She loved the Carter Street School and photographed it both inside and out.
Gary Stass, member since 1979 served on our Accessions Committee and was an adviser and contributor to many of our exhibits. His knowledge of antiques was
outstanding and his help to the Society in this special interest will be difficult to replace.
Rawleigh Warner, member from 1993-2006. A major supporter of modernist architecture as seen in his home by John Johansen and the Mobil prototype gas
station in New Canaan by the Eliot Noyes office.
Recognizing Past Supporters and Looking Forward
The deaths this year of several of our oustanding donors and supporters brings memories of the volunteer efforts of the
generations of New Canaanites who have made this an outstanding Society. From the founders who met in the living
room of 46 Main Street to organize the Society and initially guide it, to our last four presidents, Tina Duncan, Susan
Bishop and Prudy Parris, who were not only our presidents over the last 12 years, but worker bees for events and fund
raising. Prudy was chairman of our first Ice Cream Social 25 years ago and and both Tina and Susan during their terms
guided the Ice Cream Social and other activities. Tina brought a wonderful new dimension with a series of outstanding
concerts with renowned violinist Aaron Rosand and Susan’s programs brought new light to the Civil War with the March
programs culminating with the movie premier of “Copperhead” - a fabulous event. Had our previous mentors, John
Rogers and Paul Killiam, been here they would have shared some memories of our other movie presentations at the
Playhouse, “Down to the Sea in Ships” and the world premiere of “Huck Finn.” Actors in the films who attended as
special guests were Jo Jo Matteson from “Down to the Sea in Ships” and Jim Dale from “Huck Finn.”
Committee for Premiere of “Huck Finn”
L-R: Kate Scott, Paul Killiam, Georgia Davidson,
Janet Lindstrom, Sunny Macdonald, Kris Johnson
and Judith Dykema
Susan Bishop and her husband Bob were
Executive Producers of “Copperhead”
Premiere of “Down to the Sea in Ships”
L-R: Frank Sisson, 3rd, Elliott Sisson Jr, Jo Jo
Matteson. Jo Jo, mother of Elliott, appears as a
child in the movie
There are too many fabulous members to mention all who built the foundation of the present Society with hours of love
and labor. But several in our recent history have made an enormous difference to our development. This year at the
age of 103 a major benefactor of the Society, Mildred Baehr died. Mildred’s first gift to the Society was an intrest free
loan to purchase the Hanford-Silliman House,- the first building on our campus and our home after leaving our one room
home at the New Canaan Library. In addition, Mildred gifted the Society $100,000 in stock which with $200,000 from
Cornelius Keating became the starting point for our Archival Addition. During her term as Governor of the Society, she
gifted her collection of Dody Birds. The collection is presently on display in the Town House Parlor. Her last gift was to
name the Society in a remainder trust a gift for the future.
Another donor who passed this year was Cornelius Keating who donated $200,000 to the Archival Addition. He was a
Govenor and then a member of the Advisory Committee of the Society. He gave generously to our many projects and
his great interest in presevation spurred him to apply for and receive an easement from Historic New England for his
home. Easements are the only preservation vehicle to prevent demolition of a home other than location in a Historic
District and he was hopeful that more owners of historic homes would follow his lead.
A gift from the Bishops through their foundation paid our morgage for 65 Oenoke Ridge, the future site for our education
center, with the remaining funds in a designated fund to work to build the center.
Those mentioned above have met the requirements of single gifts over $20,000 and their names are added to the
Silliman Society. It is rewarding to realize that individuals have done so much to build the Historical Society. As we enter
our 125th year we look forward to the continued support of our present members and volunteers and hope to expand
even further our community support.
It is through individual member gifts, foundation gifts and fund raising efforts that we will continue our preservation of the
history, buildings and artifacts of New Canaan.

OPPORTUNITIES IN GIVING
The New Canaan Historical Society is always interested in adding appropriately to its collections. For the Library we
welcome books, maps, manuscripts, diaries, documents, photographs, family papers, business papers, and journals
pertaining to the history of the area. For the Costume Museum we are interested in period clothing and accessories for
men, women and children – particularly when these can be attributed to known individuals or occasions. In the Hanford
-Silliman House and the Society’s other museums there may be a place for furniture, paintings, and miscellaneous
items.
The Society is happy to receive funds for general or special purposes, including the care and expansion of its buildings,
collections, and services. Memorials to individuals may be arranged. You are invited to make the New Canaan Historical Society a beneficiary in preparing your will. This form is suggested:
“I give and bequeath to the New Canaan Historical Society, a not-for-profit corporation under the laws of the State of
Connecticut and located in the town of New Canaan in said state, the sum of _________ dollars to be used for the general purposes of said society as its Board of Governors shall determine” [as an outright gift] or “the sum of _________ in
trust, the income from which is to be for____________” [as a restricted gift].
The Silliman Society
The Silliman Society was created by the New Canaan Historical Society in 2000 to fill the need to recognize donors contributing or bequeathing $20,000 or more. The donors’ names will be placed on a plaque
prominently displayed at the New Canaan Historical Society’s archival addition. The Silliman Society recognizes the Silliman and Kellogg families for their support of the Society since its founding.
