It’s been a busy and exciting
month in WMBA House League
baseball. In the span of just over
a month we have had our All-Star
Games, XTRA Innings program,
and now the teams are getting
geared up for play-offs and/or
their end of season banquet.
2012 WMBA House League
All-Star Games: July 8th, 2012
The day featured over 200
WMBA House League players,
divided amongst 5 age divisions,
ranging in ages from 8 (Rookie
Ball) to 21 (Junior Ball). Each
team participated in one of the 8
All-Star games modeled after
Major League Baseball’s annual
All-Star Game. Despite the
morning thunderstorm, all the
games started on time and ran
smoothly - thanks to the
assistance of many individuals.

for the game to grow as well as

The XTRA Innings program
began with a 2 hour pre-season
evaluation camp held on June
23 which was run similar to a
rep tryout. Players were
evaluated on fielding, throwing,
catching, batting, and pitching.
A player draft was held on June
29th where the coaches
selected players for their
respective rosters with the goal
of creating two evenly balanced
teams - and based on the outcome of all the games it would
appear that we have been
successful in that goal.

COACHING DRILL OF THE MONTH:
SOFT TOSS SCRIMMAGE
This is an easy practice drill that involves
both offense and defense. Split your team
into two squads. One will play offense and
one will play defense, just like a regular
game. Since each team will be short of a
full defensive team, let the defensive
players determine how they will set up their
defense. Bunting and stealing by the
offense team is not allowed. Play 6 outs
per half inning (allowing more players to
get an at-bat).
hitter from the side. The hitter must swing
at each pitch. After each hitter, the
defense will rotate one position. Rotate
around the infield from 1st to 3rd, then to
left field around to right. The right fielder
rotates to 1st.

REP TOURNAMENT FINALISTS!
Mosquito AA Places 2nd in Chatham!
The Whitby Chiefs Mosquito AA team, placed
2nd at the Canada Day weekend
tournament in Chatham. After going 3-0 in a
round robin with wins over Windsor (14-1)
Sarnia (11-9) and Lemington (12-4), the
Chiefs beat Amhurtsburg (13-7) in the semis
and faced the host team, Chatham, in the
finals.
The round robin was highlighted by a come
from behind win over Sarnia. After giving up
7 runs in two innings. The Chiefs came back
strong to score 10 runs in the top of the 5th.
Including a grand slam by Noah Cornish to
take the lead. Zach Hagerman, came in and
pitched the bottom of the 5th and got the
3rd out with bases loaded and a full count,
to keep the lead, and preserve the win.
In the final game of the tournament, hopes
(and the temperature) were high for Whitby.
The boys fought hard against the host team,
Chatham who had only giving up a total of 6
runs throughout the tournament. It was too
close for comfort through the first five
innings, 3-1. Sadly, the boys were unable to
get any closer, but held on, refusing to give
up a run until the 7th inning, with Chatham
winning 6-1

The coaching was very proud of the way the
boys played and the tournament director
commended them on their sportsmanship

The Coaching Staff cannot say enough

of the tournament by a score of 10-1!
In their second game on Friday, Whitby
played the Stars Baseball Club. Stars
would prove to be a strong opponent,
scoring early and often en route to a 10-0
victory. They would later go on to win the
tournament.
The chiefs started the third game of the
tournament against the Ontario Orioles, an
elite team based out of Brampton. The
Orioles would score their only run of the
game in the 7th inning, ending the game
with a score of 6-1; Whitby was again
victorious!
With a record of 2-1 in round robin play,
the Chiefs barely lost on qualifying for the
championship round; losing in the 3rd tiebreaker by just one run. They would then
face off against the Ohio Warriors on
Sunday morning. In what turned out to be
a very close game, the Chiefs went into the
7th inning leading 4-3! Although the
Warriors loaded the bases, Whitby struck

FAQ
Can my child tryout for Rep?
We welcome all players to try out to represent
Whitby in the representative program. Tryouts
usually take place in mid-September; keep an eye
on our website for details. Players must register
and pay the basic registration fee for their division
and provide a copy of their receipt to the coach
prior to trying out. If the player does not make a
representative team, the registration fee is
transferred to their house league season. If, after
tryouts, the player chooses not to play rep or house
league, they can request a refund. Our refund
policy is available on our home page under policies.
