Bewitching Beasts and Magical Monsters

HISTORY
In our history lessons we will be delving into the
past and learning about the Groovy Greeks! Class
2 will be whizzing back in time to learn about
Ancient Greek myths and legends. We will learn
how to battle the deadly Hydra and capture crafty
Cerberus! Luckily, we will have some fantastic
Ancient Greek heroes and Gods on our side to
help us in our adventures through history.
The children will learn about timelines and how we
use these to track history. We will learn about daily
life as an Ancient Greek. We will be asking
historical questions and researching the answers.
Our lessons will help us discover what the Ancient
Greeks wore, ate, where they lived, how they
travelled and much much more…
Get your time machines ready…we’re in for quite
an adventure!
ART and DESIGN / D.T.
From collaging dragon scales, sketching mythical
beasts and decorating bejewelled dragon eggs,
this half term has lots of magical art in store. We
will build our own papier maché mythical creature
eggs and use our imaginations to create the
creature inside. Our history lessons will provide us
with fantastic stimuli including looking at Ancient
Greek vase and amphora designs, which will
inspire our own paintings.
nd
Of course, it wouldn’t be the Autumn 2 half term
without a bit of Christmas art ready for the festive
season!
NUMERACY
In our numeracy lessons, Class 2 will be looking at
understanding the component parts of calculations.
We will investigate the equals sign and see where
it can be placed within written calculations. We will
practise addition and subtraction as well as how to
use partitioning.
Class 2 will also be having a beginner’s
introduction to algebra. We will be looking at how
to calculate missing steps and use given
information to solve further parts of a problem.
We will continue to develop our spoken and written
explanations and ability to prove our mathematical
thinking to each other.
OUTCOME AND VISITS
As our topic was originally inspired by the story and
creatures of Tolkein’s story The Hobbit, Class 2 will
be looking forward to watching a theatrical
production of the story by the brilliant Flying Pizza
Company.
We will be working towards our performances of
this year’s nativity production, giving the children
an excellent opportunity to practise their performing
skills.

Class 2
Autumn 2nd half
PSHE/P4C
In PSHE lessons, Class 2 children will be looking at
friendship and what it means to be a good friend.
They will create a class friendship code and think
about how we make and manage friendships. We will
also be thinking about how to talk to one another and
how to pay people compliments.
LITERACY
We will be enjoying lots of fantastically inspiring
Ancient Greek myths and legends to stimulate our
writing this half term. Class 2 will be writing dragon
poems using amazing adjectives, alliteration and even
some similes. We will be looking at instructions writing
– how to catch a dragon – and will practise our ideas
through role-play. Using Smaug from The Hobbit as
our inspiration, we will write non-chronological reports
about our own mythical dragons we design. We will
continue to pick texts apart and study how writers
create effects and the purpose behind writing. We will
continue our work looking at grammar and noticing
word groups in texts we study. In the lead up to the
Christmas production we will be rehearsing and acting,
giving us a great opportunity to use our speaking and
listening skills.
RE
In R.E. lessons this half term, we will be learning about
Hinduism. We will look at what Hindus believe, their
traditions and what daily life is like for a Hindu. We will
also be learning about the Christmas story and what
the meaning of Christmas is for Christians around the
world.
MUSIC
It’s that time of year…nativity season! This year we will
be producing a crowd pleasing rendition of Angel
Express. Stay tuned…it will, I’m sure, be a musical
and theatrical triumph!
PE
Gymnastics
Class 2 will be developing their gymnastic skills
including rolling, balancing, jumping, travel and
synchronisation. We will be using a range of
equipment in lessons.
Games
The children will continue to work on their ball control
and develop their throwing, catching and aiming skills.
They will apply these skills in a range of paired and
group games.
Olympics
In our history lessons, the children will be learning
about the origins of the Olympic Games and hopefully
participating in our own mini version!
