The Era of the Enlightenment and French Revolution Unit Learning Objectives: By the end of this scheme of work, students will be able to understand and analyze the Era of the French Revolution from multiple perspectives and insights gained from both secondary and primary source material. You will be creating an essay. See the marking scheme for criteria explanations. You will be provided with all relevant primary and secondary source materials needed. You should not do any extra research for this assignment. However, you will use MLA citations (internal) in your essay, to correctly reference the sources provided. THE ESSAY You will write an essay answering the following question: By 1807, to what extent had the French Revolution upheld the values of the Enlightenment? The values of the Enlightenment can be defined by the following passage: “The Enlightenment philosophes articulated basic principles of the modern outlook: confidence in the selfsufficiency of the human mind, belief that individuals possess natural rights that governments should not violate, and the desire to reform society in accordance with rational principles. ” Marvin Perry The Enlightenment Essay Structure: Part I: Define argument: Thesis, Introduction, Conclusion (1 Paragraph) ● ● ● ● ● Hook clearly sets the historical context and draws the reader in; Thesis is clearly stated; Three supporting sentences argue to the main thesis; Summation includes counter and ‘counters the counter’; Transition sentence used effectively Part II: Define the values of the Enlightenment (3 Paragraphs). Each paragraph must follow PEE format. Paragraph I: Which Enlightenment Thinkers Support “confidence in the selfsufficiency of the human mind”? Paragraph II: Which Enlightenment Thinkers support: “belief that individuals possess natural rights that governments should not violate”? Paragraph III: Which Enlightenment Thinkers support: “the desire to reform society in accordance with rational principles.”? Part III: Analyze relevant phases of the French Revolution in relation to the question (3 paragraphs) You must make reference to at least one primary source from that time period in each section and test it against at least one tenant from Perry.
