The University District Food Bank
Presents Its Annual
Benefit Auction
Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016
St. Demetrios Hall
www.udistrictfoodbank.org
Welcome Friends of the University District Food Bank!
Thank you so very much for joining us for the 21st annual “Take a Bite Out
of Hunger” Benefit Auction! I’m honored and proud to welcome you on behalf
of our board of directors, staff and, most importantly, our customers. This
event continues to serve as the primary generator of funding for our daily
operations. So please give generously this evening. We are also very grateful
for the underwriting and support of this event from our sponsors. Without
them we would not be able to make this evening possible. Please help us
thank our sponsors by supporting their businesses.
This year has been an amazing one for the University District Food Bank.
July 11 marked the first day of operations in our beautiful new facility,
located near the corner of 50th and Roosevelt Ave NE. We are very excited
about the opportunities this new facility will bring to the community. It’s
bigger and it’s better! Thank you to all of you who made it possible through
the success of the multi-year Capital Campaign.
You may already be aware of the impact of the University District Food
Bank, but I can’t emphasize enough how vital the lifeline is that University
District Food Bank provides to those in our community in need. By yearend, the food bank will provide over 2.3 million pounds of food to over 5,200
families. Distribution of this food is done via several wonderful services. We
offer a grocery-store model for customers with the walk-in food bank during business hours, home delivery to those unable to reach the food bank,
and weekend back packs filled with food supplies for local students on free
or reduced lunch programs. In fact, we have expanded the “Packs for Kids”
program to now serve eleven schools in our service area.
Thanks to your help and donations, the University District Food Bank
remains a steadfast pillar of support in Seattle. That community support
comes to us through food donations, money and volunteer time. Every
month, our volunteers contribute more than 1,900 hours of service helping
to stock our shelves, pack and unpack donations, assist families in making
nutritious selections, and offer a kind word to everyone who comes through
our door. Our local grocery stores, community food drives and farmers at the
University District Farmers Market contribute food each week to keep our
shelves stocked. We receive financial support from local government, churches, schools, businesses, foundations and you. We are all in this together,
working to keep all our neighbors nourished. Even in our new and beautiful
space, we need continuous support. Maintaining our facility and expanding
our services will require more funding.
I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Development Director Paul Yunker,
Board Vice President Paula Rhyne, Board Member Brooke Anderson and
the Auction Committee for their hard work preparing for tonight.
Lastly, thank YOU – our guests – for helping to make tonight’s event a success. Enjoy your evening, laugh, eat, drink, share and give! Give big!
Sean S. Sessions

SHAWN HAMILTON, Professional Licensed Auctioneer
Shawn began his auction career at the Missouri Auction
School in Kansas City and joined Stokes Auction Group Inc.
in 1995. He has sold everything from equipment to livestock
but has made his mark as a charity auctioneer. Shawn’s compassionate disposition and rhythmic bid calling make him a
crowd favorite on the auction block.
Shawn has a masters in economics and understands the
impact today’s economy has on your fundraising success.
His extensive background makes him a powerful auctioneer.
Shawn uses his ability to understand your needs and to create a comfortable environment for your guests to give. Even
with the most challenging items, Shawn creates optimal results. In spring 2004 he proved his ascension to the premier
list of auctioneers when he shared the stage with a handful
of A-list celebrities at Celebrity Fight Night X in Phoenix,
Arizona.
Shawn’s years in the auction business have brought him a
wealth of experience and ideas. Shawn and his family have
hosted the annual Garlic Fest on their farm in Washington
State, attracting more than 13,000 people who come for
food, crafts and music. He has the hands-on event planning
experience that keeps him in tune with the challenges your
organization may be facing. Shawn’s diverse professional
background makes him one of the country’s leading auctioneers for causes.
FRANK HARLAN, Master of Ceremony
Frank has been a weekly volunteer at the University District
Food Bank since 2008, and this is his eighth time appearing
as the MC for this annual fundraising event. Frank is a fun
guy who appreciates a good shot of espresso, a cool glass of
water and easy conversation.
An interactive and creative history has taken Frank from
comedic performance artist and Pacific Northwest underground music icon, to special event producer, corporate team
builder and content developer – all culminating to land him
in a place where he finds himself writing and performing
again. Only now, he uses those skills to marry people and
bury people. By creating a presentation with a very personal
narrative he takes each unique audience on a heartfelt,
laugh-out-loud and tearful roller-coaster ride of emotions
that brings groups of people together to share in sincere celebrations of human love.
Frank's experience as an entertainer and creative producer
makes him a great resource for brides and grooms planning
their wedding day in Seattle. For more information about
Frank, visit his website: www.HumanistCelebrant.us.

Auction Rules
Silent Auction
At registration you will receive a bid number. No valid bids are possible
without this number. You must use only your own number. The Silent Auction begins at 5:30 p.m. when doors open. All items have an adjacent bid
number space opposite the desired bid amount. Each new bid must equal
or exceed the required increment as shown on the bid sheet. If an entry is
not legible, the next legible entry will be used. If you want to secure the
purchase of an item, write your bid number in the box labeled “Guaranteed
Purchase” and it’s yours. Once a Guaranteed Bid has been entered, bidding
on that item is finished.
Portions of the Silent Auction will close at three separate times during the
evening. The closing times will be announced. The bidding on that section
ceases when the closing is announced. The closing bid, circled by an auction
official, constitutes the winning bid. In the event of a dispute, the Auction
Coordinator shall act as the final authority.

Live Auction
Bidding will commence when the Auctioneer begins at approximately 7:30
p.m. To enter a bid, signal either the auctioneer or one of the spotters located
around the room by raising your bid number.
Use only the bid number assigned to you. Please hold your bid number so
the Auctioneer can easily see it.
The Auctioneer will acknowledge successful bidders at the conclusion of each
Live Item. Acceptance of this acknowledgement constitutes a legal contract
to buy. You will then sign an acknowledgement which will be brought to
your table.
In the event of a dispute between bidders, the Auctioneer shall have the sole
and final discretion to determine the winning bid or to re-offer the item in
dispute.
Dessert Dash
The Dessert Dash is a group activity. At each table there are Dessert Dash
bid sheets. When the auctioneer gives the signal, table guests will have an
opportunity to place their bids individually. The Dessert bid sheets will be
collected and tabulated by the assigned table captain for each table. The
table captain then writes the total of all his/her individual table bid sheets
on the front of the envelope. A runner will collect each table’s envelope and
order them from the highest to lowest. The Auctioneer will announce the
order and a person from each table will be able to “dash” and choose their
dessert. In case of ties, the first one to the table wins.
Best of Live Raffle Rules
1. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the Raffle table.
2. Each purchase includes a chance to win one Live Auction item.
3. The winning number will be drawn at the beginning of the Live Auction.
4. You must be present to win.
5. Ticket sales begin at 5:30 p.m. and will continue until all 100 chances
have been purchased.
6. You may charge your raffle purchase to your bid number account if you
have registered for Express Pay at Registration. All other purchases must be
made with cash at time of purchase.
Payment
Placing your bid number on a bid sheet or presenting it during the Live Auction constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item. All sales are final and
there will be no exchanges or refunds unless so specified at the time of sale.
All items must be paid for by the evening’s end unless you are using the
Express Pay system in which case credit card amounts will be processed by
the next business day. If you are not using Express Pay, payment of cash or
check will be accepted.
The signer/designated bidder must make payment for items that are jointly
purchased by two or more parties. The designated bidder shall be responsible for making arrangements for reimbursement from the co-purchasers.
The Check Out/Payment station will open at 9:45 p.m. Please do not begin
checking out until after this time. If you are using Express Pay, a receipt
6 | University District Food Bank Auction 2016
will be given to you at checkout marked PAID which will allow you to retrieve your items at the Item Retrieval Station. You must receive a receipt
marked PAID before you retrieve your items.
All items not removed auction night will become property of the University
District Food Bank unless prior arrangements are made.
Express Pay
This year we are using the Express Pay method of payment. Express Pay accepts Visa, MasterCard and American Express. When you register you will
have the opportunity to let the auction staff know your preferred method of
payment. If you elect to use Express Pay we will swipe your credit card and
verify your contact information. At the end of the evening you will be given
a receipt listing all the items you have won. You may pick up your receipt
any time after 9:45 p.m. It will be marked PAID and you can proceed to Item
Retrieval to pick up your items.

Interesting
Facts
❖❖ Our nutritionally-balanced
supermarket-style shopping
system has been replicated
by agencies from across the
United States.
❖❖ Last year our volunteers
donated enough time
to equal 11 full-time
employees.
❖❖ Each week we provide
groceries to about 1,100
low-income families.
❖❖ Last year we distributed 2.2
million pounds of food.
❖❖ Seventy percent of the food
we distribute is donated,
but we still will spend
nearly $200,000 buying
food, toiletries and baby
supplies to support our
three programs.
❖❖ Our home delivery program
serves over 100 customers
from Capitol Hill to Lake
City and Phinney Ridge to
Sand Point.
❖❖ Packs for Kids, our backpack program, provides
snacks and easy to prepare
meals to students in six
elementary schools, two
middle schools, and three
high schools in Northeast
Seattle, so they will have
something to eat during the
weekend.
