Mission
The Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation is a nonprofit corporation that promotes educational and research
programs about the life, times, philosophy and legacy of Patrick Henry. As part of that mission, the Foundation
maintains and interprets Red Hill, Patrick Henry's last home and burial place, as a historic site and museum.
Background
The Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation is devoted to the preservation and interpretation of Red Hill, Patrick
Henry’s last home and burial site. By Joint Resolution of Congress in 1986, Red Hill-the Patrick Henry Memorial
Foundation was declared a national memorial. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization, incorporated in 1944
and receives no federal or state funding, relying primarily on admission fees, contributions from the public and
foundations.
Impact
Red Hill is the last home and burial place of America’s great patriot, Patrick Henry. Annually, over 10,000
visitors come and explore Red Hill. While they are here, visitors are escorted into the timeline exhibit room
where they view an introductory fifteen-minute video on Patrick Henry's career and life at Red Hill before visiting
the Red Hill Museum. There visitors follow a self-guided tour of Red Hill which includes Patrick Henry’s grave
site, and the grounds overlooking the Staunton River Valley, which appear much as they did in Henry's time.
Red Hill houses the largest collection of Patrick Henry artifacts in the world. One of the best known pieces in the
museum is the painting by Peter Frederick Rothermel, “Patrick Henry Before the Virginia House of Burgesses.”
This famous historical painting reflects Patrick Henry delivering his speech against the Stamp Act of 1765
declaring his opposition to King George III.
Some of Red Hill's special programs include an annual Naturalization Ceremony; the 4th of July Celebration
which features living history re-enactments, music, artisan vendors, food and concludes with a fireworks show;
the Bluegrass, Barbecue & Brew Festival; and our annual Christmas Open House. Also, throughout the year,
Living History Days are scheduled for school children and home-schoolers from around the nation; this program
brings history to life for 2,000 plus children.
Patrick Henry’s Red Hill is open 362 days a year.

CEO/Executive Director Statement
One aspect close to my heart at Patrick Henry's Red Hill is the education. We provide hands on living history
activities to public, private, and homeschool children of all ages, but primarily ones in the fourth grade. This
gives each child the chance to experience life in the 18th century just like Patrick Henry. It is wonderful to see
the looks of wonder and joy on the children's faces, and the excitement in their actions. Hope Marstin, Chief
Operating Officer

Independence Day Celebration
Description
The Independence Day Celebration held at Red Hill is a commemoration
of the signing of the Declaration and the nation's fight for independence.
Held annually on the fourth day in July, over 3,000 attend the day-long

his 6th great grandson, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and
celebratory fireworks display.
Budget
$15,000.00
Long term Success
Celebrating the founding of our nation keeps alive our nation's history and
the purposes of the fight for freedom and liberty. The celebratory event

ideals on which the nation was founded, and the great sacrifice made by
our ancestors to ensure a free nation and democratic society to those
who have the great privilege of living in the United States.
Short Term Success
Participants in the Independence Day celebration are reminded of the
struggle and achievements of great men such as Patrick Henry who
unwaveringly fought to bring about liberty as evidenced in the Declaration

Bill of Rights.
