The passengers in the train are impatient... They want to get to
London as soon as possible. Eurostar staff are giving information.
Hello sir, I’m from Belgium.
Can you tell me what is
happening?
We booked a hotel for
tonight. What if we
are late?
Good evening, madam.
Well, there’s a problem
with the electricity.
Don’t worry, dear.
Let’s just call the
hotel. I’m sure they
understand.
What can we do now
honey?
Of course! You’re
absolutely right.
I have no idea.
Be patient I guess.
Let’s call them
right away!

Hello, I’m Patrick. What’s your name?
I’m Kate. I’m from Belgium. And you?
I’m from England. Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you too.
We’re going back to London.
No, you aren’t. You’re still in Ashford, like everybody else.
Funny! Why are you travelling to London?
We’re on holiday and London seems so exciting!
Right you are. Look, my sisters are over there, eating their ice cream.
Oh, they are lucky. I am starving.
Well, come with me then. I think Mum has got some sandwiches left.
I’m sorry. I can’t go too far away from my parents.
Where are your parents then?
My Mum’s in the train with our luggage. And Dad’s on the phone.
Are you an only child?
No, I’m not. I’ve got one brother. His name is Sven. He’s over there.
I’ve got no brothers, only three sisters. And they’re so childish.
I understand. I’ve got one older sister. Her name is Ellen. She’s already married. She’s got
a baby.
Patrick: How old is she?
Kate:
It’s 3 months old.
Patrick: No, I mean your sister?
Kate:
Oh, she is 24 I think.
“All passengers of the Eurostar number 9145 to London please board the train. The train leaves
immediately.”

Bye, Patrick. Thanks for the sandwiches.
Oh, that’s all right. Here’s my address and phone number. Please call me soon.
Great! Promise!
Let’s take a taxi and go to the hotel, I’m really very tired and I’d like to have a decent meal.
So, bye bye then. Thanks for helping us!
I wish you a safe trip when you return home!
Mum, why don’t we take the underground?
Please, Kate. With all our suitcases?
Sorry, it was only an idea. Tomorrow perhaps?
Yes, we’ve got a travel card, remember?

Song: Potverdekke it’s Great to Be a Belgian
Potverdekke! It’s great to be a Belgian,
I’m not English, I’m not French and I’m not Dutch,
(I’m not Spanish, Portuguese or German,)
I’m a Belgian so thank you very much!
As I walk along the street, with my mayonnaise and frites,
You can tell I’m as happy as can be.
With my Duvel in my hand then you must understand,
I’m a Belgian so nothing worries me!
Chorus (I’m not Irish, Italian or Danish)
Without the Belgians there would be no saxophone,
No Tintin, Captain Haddock or Poirot.
And you’ll excuse me if I’ve missed anybody off the list,
These are the only Belgians that I know!
Chorus (I’m not Finnish, Austrian or Swedish)
Chorus (I’m not Spanish, Portuguese or German)

Now the English egg and bacon’s not so bad,
Especially since all their cows went mad.
But if they’ve never tasted mussels,
on the Grand Place down in Brussels,
It’s no wonder they’re feeling very sad!

Chorus (I’m not Irish, Italian or Danish)
I’m a Belgian, I’m not Irish, I’m not Greek,
I don’t drink Guinness or Retsina, I drink Kriek!
On the Schelde or the Meuse,
you find me drinking Geuze,
Or Leffe, or Chimay, or Lambic!

It’ s All in the Family
The six wives of Henry VIII
These are the characters:
• Catherine of Aragon
• Anne Boleyn
• Jane Seymour
• Anne of Cleves
• Catherine Howard
• Catherine Parr
And this is their story:
It is the year 1501. Catherine of Aragon, a Spanish princess, sails to England to marry Arthur. Arthur is
the son of the English king Henry VII. Arthur is 14 years old, Catherine is 15. Six months after their marriage, Arthur dies of an infection. His younger brother, Henry, is next in line to become king of England.
He is Henry VIII.

Henry’s first wife: Catherine of Aragon
Henry VIII agrees to marry Catherine, his sister-in-law. In 1509 they become husband and wife. Henry’s
father dies and Henry becomes king of England. Henry is 18, Catherine 23.
They have got one daughter: Mary but Henry wants a son. Only sons can rule a country! That is why he
asks the pope for a divorce.
His second wife: Anne Boleyn
In 1532 he marries the young Anne Boleyn. They have a daughter: Elizabeth but Henry really wants a
son. So Henry says Anne is having an affair with another man. He puts her in prison. Seventeen days
later, his soldiers chop off Anne’s head in the Tower of London.
Henry’s third queen: Jane Seymour
Jane is Henry’s one and only love. They have a son: Edward. But Jane dies a few days after Edward’s
birth.
Henry’s fourth queen: Anne of Cleves
Then Anne of Cleves arrives in England. She is from Holland. Henry signs a marriage contract before he
meets Anne. When he sees Anne for the first time he decides he doesn’t want to live with her. They get
divorced.

Catherine Howard is the fifth wife of Henry VIII
After some months Henry starts to suspect her of meeting male friends. She is also executed by Henry.

1547: Henry’s son, Edward VI becomes king of England
1553: Edward VI gets ill and dies. His half-sister Mary becomes queen.
1554: Mary Tudor, also called “Bloody Mary” marries the Spanish King Philip II.
1558: Mary becomes ill and dies. Her half-sister Elizabeth I is the next queen of England.
1603: Elizabeth I dies. All of Henry VIII’s children died childless. So he hasn’t got any grandchildren.

Henry’s sixth and last wife: Catherine Parr
Catherine Parr is the only wife to survive Henry. After Henry’s death, she takes care of his three children,
like a real mother.
1
The throne goes to Elizabeth’s aunt’s husband: James VI of Scotland. He also becomes king of England,
as James I. All of Henry’s efforts to keep the crown in the Tudor family failed!

• Many people say England and English when they mean Britain or the UK. The people of Scotland, Wales or
Northern Ireland are not English but they are all British!
• Great Britain and Ireland are islands. The UK has a coastline of 7,723 miles. Nowhere in the UK is more
than 65 miles from the coast!
• Cars drive on the left hand side of the road in the UK. So, when you cross the street: first look right, then
left, then right again!
• People in the UK have no identity cards.
• English and French words sometimes look the same, like chair/chaise, people/peuple, pork/porc. That’s
because the Normans (from France) invaded England in 1066. French was the official language of kings
and queens of England for many centuries.
• More than 340 million people all over the world speak English. But many more people speak Mandarin
(Chinese), Hindi or Spanish. English is the international language of technology (computers), finance and
education.
