This is Sharon Den Adel. She is the lead singer in the band Within Temptation. She wears a lot of old fashion
inspired clothing and above is a picture from one of their concerts. She’s wearing a dress made by a bodice
with a school girl skirt stopping halfway down her knee, making it the underskirt. Above she is wearing an
overskirt attached to a belt with a petticoat effect. Her bodice has the stripes of a corset, but not the busk.
She is also wearing a tippet- like jacket. She has feathers instead of fur, and it’s as mentioned before a jacket
and not a cape- like garment. The arms go outwards the further they go down the hand, which was common
in the renaissance. She is wearing red and black clothing. This is inspired by the gothic clothing style, but red
was also a sign of power in the renaissance. It was used by priests, judges and royalty mostly.
I like this garment because it binds together three styles; The modern style, the renaissance and the gothic
style. This is something this artist excels on. Every concert her clothing simply is stunning, and she combines
so many styles. The only thing I can say I don’t like about this outfit is the overskirt. I think the petticoat
effect generally is really ugly when it’s the sideway style. I can’t really stand it. I would’ve liked it better if she
had a real corset and not just a bodice. Later she’s worn real corsets, but I can understand why it’s hard to
be all over the stage in a concert dragging from one to two hours with hard, metal busks inside.

∗
∗
Choose one of the following:
A
“Shakespeare in Love” is a film based on the story of “Romeo and
Juliet”. Explain how the film mirrors the original story. Describe the characters
and the challenges they face. Give your personal evaluation of the film. Give
reasons for your view.
B
“Romeo and Juliet” is a story about star-crossed lovers and the
challenges they face. Why do you think this story still touches our hearts? Are
there “Romeo and Juliet” stories in the modern world? Give examples.
C
The Renaissance was different from our time in many ways. Explain
how society and ideas were different. Do you think we could learn something
from this era, or do you think all development is for the good?
Remember the essay structure, and good luck!!!
Evaluation
∗ How did you like the fashion design assignment?
∗ I really liked it. I love working with fashion, how to
talk about and describe the design we are looking at. I
think this will be very useful for us later too.
Something I also like is that we are learning a lot to
look into details and write about that. I really hope
that we can have more of these assignments and
learn more vocabulary that we actually need.

Evaluation
Working with vocational English?
∗ I think it’s useful and very relevant for us, as we learn
a lot of new words and phrases. Some of us are
planning on studying design etc. abroad after we’re
finished here, so it’s good to know the most
important words.
