An exquisite combination of two [equine] stars.

“An exquisite combination
of two [equine] stars.”
There is no more of an exciting time for a studmaster
than when launching a new stallion, and the 2006
season bears even more significance than usual
following the purchase of War Trace (USA) during
our visit to the United States earlier this year.
After viewing a vast array of sire prospects — both
on and off the track — and speaking with learned
thoroughbred folk with extensive experience in
North American racing and breeding circles, we
came to the conclusion that a quality Storm Cat
stallion was well overdue for Queensland, and that
War Trace (USA) was that Storm Cat horse.
But don’t just take our word for it.
War Trace was recuperating from a career ending
injury on the famed Darby Dan Farm, Kentucky,
when we first set eyes upon him and we were soon
to be convinced about his merit as an Australian
stud prospect. The warmth and enthusiasm in which
John Phillips, co-Managing partner of Darby Dan
Farm and breeder of War Trace (USA), discussed
the horse and his boodlines was a major
contributing factor in the outright purchase of the
blueblood by Wattle Brae Stud.
Phillips, explained that “War Trace hails from one of
Darby Dan’s oldest, best and most closely held
families,” and that “His is a family of champions
and sires.” None moreso, we were about to learn,
than War Trace’s dam, Memories of Silver, who he
described as “a brilliant athlete conformationally
flawless.”
Phillips final declaration that War Trace “is an
exquisite combination of two stars” established
beyond any reasonable doubt that Wattle Brae Stud
and the Queensland thoroughbred breeding industry
was ready for the quality son of Storm Cat
So, it is with very great pride that I introduce War
Trace for this coming 2006 breeding season.

The minimum of change,
the maximum of stability
…just as nature intended!
Many spacious, safely fenced
paddocks make up Wattle Brae,
giving horses plenty of
galloping and forage space. We
can handle large numbers, but
cater to each individual’s needs
as if we were a boutique-stud.
Arriving mares are quarantined
from the main herds for six
weeks, and paired with others
before appropriate placement.
Annual agistment is available to
intrastate, interstate and
overseas owners’ stock at very
competitive prices. We will also
walk-in your mare to stallions
standing at other studs in
Queensland.
A rich history…
Wattle Brae Stud has a rich history
spanning more than eighty years. Much of it
revolves around the Turkington family with
present proprietor, Gary Turkington, along
with his wife Phoebe, the third generation to
run the stud farm, on land first settled by
Gary's great-grandfather George
Turkington in 1910.
Wattle Brae is set on 809 hectares
(approximately 2000 acres) of fertile
country on the eastern slopes of the
famous Darling Downs, Queensland.
The Toowoomba to Warwick New
England Highway is nearby.
Our property extends over three
separate kinds of country, from
irrigated river flats with their
improved pasture, to cropland under
barley and oats, to hill country with
natural grasses and established trees.
At Wattle Brae Stud, horses come first.
As a fifteen-year-old boy George Turkington
emigrated from Ulster to Australia, to the
small Queensland town of Allora. It was the
turn of last century, and his journey saw him
marry and eventually settle his family on an
annexure of the nearby Pilton Homestead
property, one of the great holdings on the
Darling Downs dating back to 1870.
It was then up to George Turkington's eldest
son Thomas, and his wife Daisy, to found
Wattle Brae Thoroughbred Stud on this
property in 1921 and begin breeding
racehorses. This they did with great success,
and their son Ray, along with his wife
Mariann, not only did the same but
expanded, handing over to son Gary
Turkington just twenty years ago.
In fact, Wattle Brae Thoroughbred Stud is
the oldest continuously operating
thoroughbred stud in Queensland.

James Toner, Trainer
“War Trace was more than a good horse
— he was very good! His ability to change
gears and accelerate in deep stretch would
have put him in the company of the
country’s elite had injury not intervened.”

Partner Darby Dan Farm
“War Trace hails from one of Darby Dan’s

His is a family of champions and sires. His

athlete and is conformationally flawless.

MR. PROSPECTOR & OTHER RAISE A NATIVE: The leading cross for
Storm Cat has been with Mr. Prospector line mares, the cross producing more
than 80 stakes winners. Mr. Prospector is also good with the Roberto strain
which is in the mare, as the dam of Mr. Prospector is a close genetic relative to
the dam of Roberto.
and bringing in Nijinsky II), Malibu Moon (bringing in Nijinsky II), Stephen Got
Even and Golden Missile. The Capote branch is available via daughters of
Boston Harbor.
Mr. Prospector branches and sire lines which have worked with Storm Cat
include Afleet, Conquistador Cielo, Fappiano, Forty Niner, Gone West,
Kingmambo, Lycius, Machiavellian, Miswaki, Seeking the Gold and
Woodman.
Conquistador Cielo is sire of Conquistarose (particularly good as he is out
of a mare by Nijinsky II, who is a genetic relative to Storm Bird, the sire of
Storm Cat), El Moxie (giving inbreeding to Natalma). Fappiano sources include
Rubiano (out of a mare by Nijinsky II); Quiet American (sire in Australia of Real
Quiet, who should suit well here on pedigree), Unbridled (whose son,
Unbridled’s Song, stood in Australia), Cryptoclearance and in Australia Comet
Shine. Gone West is sire of Elusive Quality, Mr. Greeley, Grand Slam, Zafonic
(giving the genetic relatives Storm Bird and The Minstrel) and Supremo (giving
very interesting inbreeding to the family of War Trace), who have all stood in
Australia. Machiavellian is sire in Australia of Vettori (who carries Nijinsky II).
Miswaki is sire of Black Tie Affair, himself sire of Formal Gold, and in Australia
Aliocha and Umatilla, who is out of a Nijinsky II mare). Seeking the Gold is sire
of Secret Savings and Lujain (bringing in Nijinsky II) who have stood in
Australia. Woodman sons who have stood in Australia or New Zealand
include Timber Country, Woodborough, Bahhare and Dr. Johnson.
Other Mr. Prospector line sons who are represented in Australia and New
Zealand are Bellotto, Faltaat, Geiger Counter (and his son Canadian Silver),
Jade Hunter, Mr. Henrysee, Protos, Rhythm (brother to Woodman), and
Thunder Gulch and Namaqualand (both out of mares by War Trace’s
grandsire, Storm Bird).
Storm Cat has done very well with Raise a Native via Alydar.
Sons of Alydar include Alysheba (broodmare sire of Storm Cat line
stakes winners), Criminal Type, Turkoman, Easy Goer (broodmare sire
of Storm Cat line stakes winners), Strike the Gold, Saratoga Six
(broodmare sire of Storm Cat line stakes winners) and Dare and Go.
Storm Cat has also crossed well with mares from the Exclusive
Native line, particularly through Affirmed (sire in Australia of
Pricelessly, bringing in Nijinsky II). Other Exclusive Native strains
found in Australia include Twenty Four Karat and Zoffany.
8
SEATTLE SLEW: There are 18 stakes winners on the Storm Cat/Seattle
Slew cross. Sons of Seattle Slew include A.P. Indy (broodmare sire of a stakes
winner by Storm Cat), Avenue of Flags, Capote, Fast Play, General Meeting
(who brings in Nijinsky II), Gold Legend, Houston, Metfield, Seattle Song
(broodmare sire of stakes winners by Storm Cat line stallions), Septieme Ciel
(bringing in Nijinsky II), Slew City Slew, Slew o’ Gold, Slewacide, Slewpy
(broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Storm Cat line stallion), Tsunami Slew
and Williamstown. The A.P. Indy branch of Seattle Slew is available via
daughters of Pulpit (out of a sister to the dam of Tale of the Cat, by Storm Cat,
In Australia, Seattle Slew can be brought in through Air de France (whose
pedigree goes well with the dam of War Trace), Khozaam, White Bridle (out of
a very close relative to the third dam of War Trace) and Yonder, as well as
Nine Carat (by Slew o’Gold) and Agincourt (by Capote).
BLUSHING GROOM: The Storm Cat/Blushing Groom cross has
produced 18 stakes winners, including six group or grade one
winners. Storm Cat has sired stakes winners out of mares descending
from Blushing Groom through Rahy, Mt. Livemore, Rainbow Quest,
Groom Dancer (and his son Pursuit of Love), Crystal Glitters, Blushing
John and Baillamont. Rainbow Quest sources include Quest for Fame
(bringing in Nijinsky II), Spectrum and Bin Ajwaad. Rahy could be
brought in through Fantastic Light and Howbaddoyouwantit (both
bringing in Nijinsky II) and Noverre. (Good, as he is out of a mare by
Northern Dancer, who is in the male line of the sire).
Mt. Livermore is sire of Housebuster (who stood in New Zealand). Other
Blushing Groom sources in Australia include Ifrad, Jahafil, Nassipour, Pre
Emptive Strike, Tawfiq and Shagny (out of a sister to Storm Bird).
RIBOT: There are more than 30 stakes winners bred on a Storm Cat/Ribot
cross. War Trace has a cross of Ribot, through Graustark, in his female line. It
could be worth doubling Graustark, or bringing in his brother His Majesty.
Graustark sons include Avatar, Key to the Mint (broodmare sire of four Storm
Cat line stakes winners. Key to Mint sons Java Gold, who brings in Nijinsky II,
Sauce Boat, are both broodmare sire of Storm Cat line stakes winners and
Sauce Boat’s three-parts-brother Plugged Nickle is also worth considering).
Avatar can be found in Australia through Triumphal March. Key to the Mint is
sire of Gold and Ivory, who stood in Australia.
Sons of His Majesty include Batonnier (broodmare sire of a graded one
winner by a son of Storm Cat), Cormorant (broodmare sire of Storm Cat line
stakes winners), Country Pine (broodmare sire of a Storm Cat line stakes
winner), Frosty the Snowman (broodmare sire of Storm Cat line stakes winners),
Majesty’s Prince, Mehmet and Pleasant Colony (who has done very well with
Storm Cat and his sons). Sons of Pleasant Colony include Cherokee Colony
and Colonial Affair (both bringing in Nijinsky II), Lac Ouimet, Pleasant Tap,
Roanoke and St. Jovite.
Storm Cat has done well with Ribot through Tom Rolfe and his son Hoist
the Flag. Broodmare sires from this line include Alleged, Stalwart, Linkage, Oh
Say, Pirate’s Bounty and Blue Ensign. Tom Rolfe sources which can be found in
Australia and New Zealand include Delgado (brother to Alleged), Palatable
and Tom’s Shu.
One the relatively few successful Ribot horse to stand his entire career
in Australia was Boucher.
WAR TRACE is out of MEMORIES OF SILVER, winner of 9 races,
$1,448,715, including Beverly D. Stakes (G1), Queen Elizabeth II
Challenge Cup (G1), Diana Handicap (G2), Ballston Spa Breeders’
Cup Handicap (G3), Just a Game Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3),
Nijinaa Stakes (G3), etc. MEMORIES OF SILVER is a sister to stakes
placed Spark Hawk, and half-sister to Memories (Miss Grillo Stakes
(G2); dam of group winner Russian Revival), stakes winner Memories
of Gold, stakes placed Childhood Memories and Best of Memories
(dam of stakes winner Best Minister). WAR TRACE’S granddam, All
My Memories, is a winning half-sister to stakes placed Rio Rita (dam of
stakes winner Balarat; granddam of stakes winner Majestic Dream),
graded stakes placed Loose Cannon, graded stakes placed
Thundering Force, Lover’s Moon (dam of graded stakes winner
Naskra’s Return and stakes winner Moon Up T. C.; granddam of
stakes winners All the Moves and Askrania; third dam of stakes winner
Rippling Return) and Our Tina Marie (dam of stakes winners Misty
Hour, Too Cool to Fool and Merit Wings; granddam of stakes winner
Pilfer). We can also note that MEMORIES OF SILVER, the dam of
DAMASCUS: The Storm Cat/Damascus cross has produced 25 stakes
winners. Storm Cat has done well with Damascus via Private Account (sire of
Private Terms, Corporate Report, Personal Flag, Unaccounted For, Secret Hello
and Valley Crossing), Cutlass (sire of Cutlass Reality), Ogygian, and Bailjumper
(Skip Trial; grandsire of Skip Away), Time for a Change (sire of Fly So Free and
Technology).
NORTHERN DANCER: In general, we do not recommend breeding a
stallion to mares from his immediate male (in this case Northern Dancer). There
are, however, more than 30 stakes winners by Storm Cat line stallions out of
Northern Dancer line mares, and there are some specific strains which are
worth considering.
There are also some strains of Damascus found in Australia which might
work. Gilded Time (by Timeless Moment) gives a double of the
Nasrullah/Princequillo cross. Salieri (by Accipiter) is a Damascus line horse that
did particularly well as a speed sire in Australia. There is a graded stakes
winner by a son of Storm Cat out of a mare by Marsayas, and his son, Mister
Frisky shuttled to Australian. Two other Damascus sons who might be found in
Australia are Amalgam and Charmande.
From the Danzig branch we can note Storm Cat line stakes winners out of
mares by Chief’s Crown (bred on the same Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross
as Storm Cat, and could be brought in through Be My Chief, Beautiful Crown,
Chief Bearhart and Grand Lodge), Danehill (who also gives a half-sister to
Northern Dancer and could be brought in through Danzero, broodmare sire of
a stakes winner by a Storm Cat son, Catbird, Commands, Danewin, Danehill
Dancer, Desert King, Flying Spur, Lion Hunter and Redoute’s Choice), Mister C
and Dayjur.
IN REALITY: Both Storm Cat and Roberto (the broodmare sire line of War
Trace) have done well with In Reality. Storm Cat particularly likes the Relaunch
branch of this sire line. Relaunch has been represented in Australia by Honour
and Glory. In Reality’s European turf classic winner, Known Fact, sired a good
stallion in Warning, himself sire of shuttle stallions Charnwood Forest and
Piccolo. Storm Cat has also worked over In Reality via Valid Appeal sire of
Valid Wager, Valid Expectations, Proud Appeal, and Mighty Appealing and in
Australia, Southern Appeal.
There are ten stakes winners on a Storm Cat/Vice Regent cross, and
particularly interesting would be Dehere (a son of Deputy Minister, who is bred
on the same Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross as Storm Cat). Vice Regent line
horses that stood in Australia, Arch Regent, New Regent and Regal Classic,
could be worth considering.
STAR KINGDOM: From limited opportunities, Storm Cat sons have begun
to cross successfully with mares from the Star Kingdom line. Hennessy has
stakes winners out of mares by Luskin Star (by Kaoru Star, and himself sire of
Covetous); Blazing Saddles (by Todman) and Semipalatinsk. (By Nodouble, by
Noholme II). Catrail has stakes winners out of mares by Bletchingly (by Biscay)
and King Apollo. Tale of the Cat has a stakes winner out of a mare by
Marscay.
Brave Warrior (by Cossack Warrior, by Bletchingly), would be interesting
as he brings in Nijinsky II. Canny Lad (by Bletchingly) brings in a Tom Fool
strain, which could be good here.
Hurricane Sky (by Star Watch, by Bletchingly) brings Nijinsky II.
SIR GAYLORD: Storm Cat is out of a mare by Secretariat, and there are
eight stakes by Storm Cat line stallions out of Sir Gaylord line mares. Four of
these are out of mares from the Sir Ivor branch of this line. In Australia and
New Zealand there are stakes winners out of mares by Sir Tristram, and his
sons Marauding, Zabeel and Kapstaad. Other Sir Tristram sons include
Admiral Lincoln, Dalmacia, Dr. Grace, Dynamo, El Qahira, Grosvenor, Military
Plume and Sovereign Red.
Sir Tristram’s sire, Sir Ivor is also represented by Imperial Prince, sire of
Victory Prince.
It could also be worth trying the Sir Gaylord line through Habitat, and
potential sons include Defecting Dancer (who brings in Nijinsky II), Arch
Sculptor, Ashabit, Dalsaan, Habituate, Hot Spark, Imperial Seal and Lord
Seymour.
Storm Cat’s sire, Storm Bird, has combined well with Storm Bird’s genetic
relatives Nijinsky II and The Minstrel. Nijinsky II sons who have stood in
Australia include Copper Kingdom, Lord of the Dance, Royal Academy (a close
genetic relative to Storm Cat, and who might work well), Serheed, Western
Symphony, Whiskey Road and Yeats. Nijinsky II grandsons include Bletchley
Park (by Caerleon) and Kala Dancer (by Niniski). In New Zealand we can note
Super Gray (out of a half-sister to Secretariat, who is broodmare sire of Storm
Cat) and Tights.
The Minstrel was represented in Australia by Palace Music (sire of
Naturalism). In New Zealand The Minstrel had Bakharoff, Chem and
Masterclass (bringing in Secretariat’s half-brother, Sir Gaylord).
Another similarly-bred horse who stood in Australia is Night Shift
OTHER: Storm Cat has crossed quite well with Sharpen Up. This male line
has not done particularly well in Australia, but might be found through Keen or
Switch in Time (by Kris, a brother to Keen). In New Zealand, Sharpen Up was
represented by the more successful College Chapel (by Sharpo) and Famous
Star.
There are four graded stakes winners by Storm Cat sons out of Century line
mares. One is out of a mare by Century himself, and others are out of mares by
Centaine and Rubiton (brother to Euclase)
Success Express is a very good sire, and brings in Nijinsky II, who is good
with Storm Cat/Storm Bird. Brief Truce is something of a reverse cross to Storm
Cat as he is by a son of Riverman (Nasrullah/Princequillo cross, like
Secretariat) out of a Northern Dancer mare. Sound Reason is an emerging
broodmare sire whose daughters have produced a grade one winner and a
grade two winner by Storm Bird line stallions (his dam is bred somewhat
similarly to the dam of Storm Bird).
