Just before I left the older daughter ran to the corner of the
small living area and brought back to me a brand new toy. I
thanked her for it, thinking it was a gift for me. She laughed
and said, "No, Father, that's not for you. That's for you to give
to the children who don't have a gift on Christmas, just like
you asked us to do". Tears came to my eyes. The middle
child had already told me she was sad because this year her
parents told her they wouldn't get a Christmas tree in order to
save money for rent. What a family! What Christians! They
were foregoing a tree, on one hand, and buying a brand new
toy for someone else's children, on the other.

They have several small children and the mother stays at
home. She hopes to go back to work when the youngest
enters kindergarten next year. For now they are living on one,
part-time income because the husband was laid off from his
full-time job. They moved into this new apartment, a one
bedroom, in order to be able to make the monthly rent.
I blessed their home, but I was the one who walked away
blessed.
Christmas has passed but we are still in the "Octave of
Christmas", the eight days of intense celebration of Jesus'
birth.
The best way to celebrate is to double down on our commitment to love others, even to the point of sacrificing our wants
and needs out of love for others.
God bless,
Father Jonathan

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD
Sunday Gospel: (Luke 2:16-21)
THE BLESSING WE RECEIVE
The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is
proclaimed in Numbers as the special blessing for the
people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the
invocation of God’s loving kindness, the shining glory
of God’s face turned toward us in love, not away from us
in anger. We are blessed by God’s own peace!
Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing,
which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus,
the image of the invisible God, God’s face is shown to
us and God’s presence is made known to us in faithful
and loving kindness.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
“Octave” comes from the Latin word for “eight,” and
since eight is one step beyond seven, the number of days
in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection,
completion, and new beginnings. Early Christians called
Sunday the “eighth day,” since it was the day after the
Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord’s Day. By
the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after
Easter Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glorious
feast when people were forbidden to fast or kneel. In the
seventh century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too.
Christmas didn’t claim the honor of a continuous feast,
but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast
of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries until
1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the earlier tradition of
celebrating Mary as Mother of God.
“theotokos”, e ciò contribuì a calmare dispute intellettuali.
richiede impegno e molto coraggio.
Buon Anno!
