A good turn and a good note – some news on
events from Lillian Farrell, SE6A: “Hi, my name is
Lillian Farrell and I'm part of the class SE6A. As part of
our Event production module we are running a music
workshop for children with special needs in St John of
Gods, Carmona House, Glenageary. The event will take
place on Thursday the 13th of December. The class are
forming a live band and will be playing popular and
Christmas themed songs with help from the children
who will provide added percussion. The event will also
be recorded and the children will receive a cd of the
songs recorded on the day”
Mountain Biking in Turkey by Richard Felle, D7:
Hey all, I’m a student at D.C.F.E. I am in 2nd Year on
the Advanced Architectural Technology & Design
Course.
When I’m not in college studying, I’m usually out racing
and training on my bike. Last October saw me racing as
part of the Irish cross country mountain bike team in
my first ever international race. I was thrilled to be
picked for the event, so I packed my bags and left for
Istanbul. Two flights later I was in the beautiful city of
Alanya way down south of Turkey. The race was serious
with pro’s and national champions from all over the
world representing their
countries, so I knew it was going
to be an interesting experience.
When I got there I checked out
the course and it was tough,
quick and gnarly. It had 15
minutes of gut wrenching
climbing and 10 minutes of
treacherous descending. We had
5 laps of this to do over 2 hours
15 minutes.
When it came to race day, a
monsoon hit and the course and
it turned to slick rock. People
were crashing everywhere!
Being Irish and used to torrential rain I knew I would
do well if I barrelled down the technical slippery rock
sections as fast as I could. Each downhill section ran
through medieval streets or on vertical rocky paths with
tight twisty turns. On average I was hitting 50km +
down the greasy streets. It was lethal; a crash would
have been fatal. So 110% concentration was needed.
On these wet streets some riders actually had to bunny
hop over wandering chickens to avoid being plastered
against the walls!
In the end I came 15th and received my first ever
International Point to go towards my taking part in
future World Cups!!! So, all in all I was fairly happy.
And as for studying next year, I hope to go on to IADT
to study Graphic Design.
Congratulations to all students who
graduated at Monkstown Church on
November 13th last.
Great celebrations
were had and a
sense of occasion
was
guaranteed
with the Minister for Education, Mary
Hanafin T.D., in attendance to present
certificates and awards. Well done!
Talent, music, food…. Keep an
eye out for events, raffles,
prizes and food, glorious food in
the canteen in December 2007
‘Power of One’ campaign by
Derek Gilroy: The Waste
Management Committee will be
launching its ‘Power of One’ energy efficiency
campaign in the coming weeks. We would very much
appreciate your co-operation to try and make it a
success.
A look at soccer and achievement, by Tom Curran:
While the rest of us look forward to a one familiar type
of turkey in December, Warren Mc Donald and Ciaran O
Brien have a different expectation. They go to Turkey
having been selected for International duty to represent
Ireland in the Futsal European Championships.
DCFE are very proud that two of our Soccer Coaching
students are bound for Ankara, Turkey as part of the
national Futsal Visually Impaired Squad. Futsal, for
those who are not familiar with it, is indoor soccer
played with 5 players on each side. The European
championships commence on the 29 November 2007
and continue until the 7 December.
There has always been keen pressure for places on the
Irish squad, and the Irish team has been moving up the
rankings over the past few years. Last year Ireland
hosted the country’s first ever home international in
Futsal and they beat the England squad which are
ranked 6th in Europe 3 -2.
The aim of this year’s squad is to bring home medals,
and to finish no lower than 4th to gain an automatic
place in the World Championships which will take place
in Africa in 2010.
The lads are on a rigorous personal training schedule at
the moment. In addition to this there is an intensive 4
hour squad training session in Blachardstown IT each
Saturday.
We wish Warren and Ciaran every success and know
that they will do the College, Dun Laoghaire,
Rathfarnham, Bray and the country proud.
Darragh Hall and Grace Devlin, AC6B, talk about
their most recent college outing: On Wednesday
November 21st AC6B traded the classroom experience
for a hands on experience in Dublin’s Architectural
Archive. We visited to carry out archaeology research
but hit a few birds with one stone – the archive has an
extensive amount of information on Irish Architecture
with a myriad of examples of buildings, plans and
biographies on the architects themselves. Downstairs
we were shown
a photography
exhibition of
Dublin’s inner
city as well as
its Victorian
architecture,
which helps our
perspective on
photography
here at DCFE.
The archives are
held
in
a
th
beautiful 19 century house on Merrion Square, which
is in need of repair, but still awe inspiring. It is free to
join so the whole class took advantage of that and we
all benefited enormously from the outing to a place
none of us were aware ever existed. Despite how
grand the house is, it manages to blend in to Dublin’s
landscape… so, if you want to discover Dublin’s little
treasures remember to be vigilant!
My route to DCFE by Yvonne Reddin, PJ6: After
living away in Australia for nine years, I returned a year
and a half ago to bring my son up
here.
Finding I had a bit of time on my
hands and having an interest in
writing, I joined up for FETAC
courses in a local national school.
Through a guidance counsellor, I
heard about courses in DCFE,
came down to get a prospectus
and found myself being
interviewed by Gemma Cox for a
Print Journalism course, which is where I am now.
I’m finding it very interesting, with a lot more subjects
involved than I first thought, thus leaving me with no
time on my hands!! I’d recommend coming here as a
first step to anyone who is thinking of returning to
education. The teachers and environment is very
helpful to everyone.
