What is an Immersion Program?
Glennie is one of twelve schools in Queensland that offer students
the opportunity to learn through the medium of immersion in another
language. This means that over three years (Year 8 to Year 10), they
learn most of their curriculum in that language.
In the case of Glennie, the language of immersion is French and the
subjects involved are:
• French (Year 8 to Year 10)
• Social Sciences (Year 8 to Year 10)
• Science (Year 8 to Year 10)
• Health and Physical Education (Year 8 to Year 9)
• Mathematics (Year 8)
Students starting the program in Year 8 may be complete beginners in
French. They develop their language proficiency quickly, systematically
building up their knowledge. In Year 8, their first assignments will be
simplified versions of what their peers are writing in English; however,
by Year 9 they are following a similar curriculum to the other classes.
For example, as part of their Year 10 Modern History course, they will be
required to write an essay in French on a topic such as how the events of
World War II led to changes to Australia’s system of alliances. In Science
the Immersion students study the same units and complete the same
examinations and assignments as students studying in English.

What are the benefits?
The following benefits have been identified in recent research findings:
• A high level of proficiency in the language of immersion, as well as
advanced linguistic skills and cultural understanding.
• Personal enrichment and challenge.
• Enhanced listening and thinking skills.
• Good study skills, self-discipline, motivation and confidence.
• More flexible and creative problem-solving skills.
• An increased understanding of how language works, including an
improved understanding of the English language.
• Improved career and travel opportunities both in Australia and
overseas.
• A positive group atmosphere leading to good learning outcomes
Results
In 2013, there were thirteen Year 12 graduates who had completed
the French Immersion course in Year 10. The French Immersion students
received two OP1s, an OP2 and an OP3 and the remaining nine gained
between an OP4 and OP11. Eight of the French Immersion graduates
earned A results in the Queensland Core Skills Test.

Who can do it?
To succeed in an immersion program, a girl needs to be reasonably able,
achieving at a B grade or better. However, personal characteristics
are at least as important. The following attributes have been identified
among students who have enjoyed and were successful in immersion
programs:
• Motivated with a strong work ethic.
• Able to develop the skills of an independent learner.
• Interested in language learning – has a desire to learn French and
to learn about French culture.
• Willing to try new ideas.
• Capable of coping with a challenge, resilient.
• Seeks ways to maximise achievement.
• Has a positive outlook and positively influences others.
• Handles stress in an appropriate way.
• Responds well to constructive criticism.
Parental support is also a factor for success. The girl must be keen, and
parent support provides essential backing. However, it should be the
student’s decision to join the program.
The Glennie Immersion girls also take part in an exchange to France for
several weeks in Year 10. This trip is an integral part of the program. It is
an important source of motivation for the girls, but it should not be their
reason for choosing immersion.
Family discussions, as well as discussions with your daughter’s class
teacher and language teacher, will be beneficial if you are considering
the option of French Immersion.

Why Study French?
It is a beautiful language that is widely spoken in many different parts of
the world. It is useful in business, diplomacy and for work in a number of
international organisations.
Similarities in vocabulary between English and French make this a
relatively easy language for beginners. At a more advanced level,
knowledge of French vocabulary is invaluable in helping senior girls
develop their range of academic and advanced vocabulary in English.
As girls gain an understanding of the importance of grammar and
structure in French, this enhances their understanding and use of English.
Knowledge of French gives a privileged access to the fascinating French
culture, be it history, cooking, painting, literature, music, film or fashion.
It is invaluable for anyone travelling to France or other Francophone
countries. France is the most visited country in the world.
