Irish Film Board Production Catalogue 2017

Chair’s Note
Indelibly woven into the rich cultural heritage of
the nation, the arts in their entirety make Ireland a
better place to live. The Irish film, animation and TV
industry forms a central part of the creative industries
in Ireland. One only has to look back at the sense of
pride throughout the country at Ireland’s Academy
Awards® success this year to see how integral film has
become to our nation’s cultural identity.
Film offers us audiovisual narratives, not only ones that
mirror our lives and tell our past and present stories, but
also narratives that look to new and exciting imaginings
and futures. But it is not just the contribution of film to
our intellectual, social and cultural life that is important;
there are huge employment opportunities in the
industries — opportunities for talented people in film,
television, animation, and creative computer games.
This year we launched our five-year strategy ‘Building
on Success’ — detailing our ambitious vision and plans
for the role of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film
Board (IFB) within the thriving Irish film, animation
and TV industry. We also welcomed a much-needed
increase in funding for 2017 to meet the need to support
and develop the next generation of storytellers and
filmmakers. However, we remain ambitious for the sector
and we will continue to call for restoration of funding to
pre-recession levels.
The IFB is proud to continue supporting Irish creative
talent in the film, animation and TV industry and we
remain focused on ensuring this support reflects our
goals in achieving gender equality and diversity in the
coming years.
The term of the current Board of the IFB ends in January
2017 and I would like to pay tribute to the tremendous
hard work and commitment of the Board over the last
four years. It has been my honour to serve as Chair of the
Board and to work with the IFB staff and the film industry
on many great initiatives.

Introduction
Worldwide audiences, international recognition and strong global
box office figures — the Irish film, animation and TV drama industry
is experiencing a period of unprecedented success. Over the past
year, a host of projects funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish
Film Board (IFB) along with projects supported by Ireland’s tax credit
have reached global audiences, solidifying Ireland’s reputation as a
centre of artistic excellence.
And it is not just one or two major films that have
broken through. Yes, IFB films received a record
number of Academy Awards® nominations this year
with Room and Brooklyn taking nine nominations
between them, including a Best Picture nod for
each film. Two of the eight best films at the Oscars
were Irish in 2016 — a phenomenal achievement.
But there are more IFB-funded films hot on their
heels, strongly resonating with Irish audiences.
the form of Seána Kerslake as she wowed as the
troubled Mary in Thornton’s much-applauded film.
Two more IFB-funded films, The Lobster and
Love & Friendship, competed at the top of the US
independent box office charts in the summer of 2016.
John Carney’s Sing Street was included in almost
every major international listing of best films for 2016.
Global audiences enjoyed Irish films with worldwide
box office figures reaching to over $150 million.
First-time directors Peter Foott and Darren
Thornton produced two of the most talked-about
Irish films of the year with The Young Offenders
and A Date for Mad Mary respectively. Foott’s
wildly successful comedy grossed €1.2 million
at the Irish box office, with its stars Alex Murphy
and Chris Walley receiving international praise for
This success is the culmination of the long-term
investment in Irish creative talent which has been
supported over the years by Bord Scannán na
hÉireann/the Irish Film Board. We must continue
to invest in Irish screenwriters, directors, creative
producers, animators, actors, designers, music
their performances. Meanwhile, a star was born in
composers and performers and all the other creative
04
personnel that make up the teams that make films,
TV animation and TV drama. The continued growth of
the sector depends on this investment. Our strength
is in our creativity and our creativity is in our people.
working closely with the IDA and Enterprise Ireland
on developing Ireland as a screen content hub and
we will also be working with RTÉ and TG4 on the
production of films, TV drama and TV animation.
The IFB launched its Five-Year Strategic Plan
2016-2020 in July 2016, which focuses on vision
and leadership in the screen sector. The strategy
outlines our ambition to promote gender equality and
diversity, build audiences, develop and support screen
production through funding and creative initiatives,
develop and nurture talent and skills through training
and education and promote inward production.
The Irish animation sector is continuing its global
expansion, illustrated by the special focus on
Ireland at Cartoon Forum in 2016, one of the world’s
leading pitching and co-production forums for
animated content, with a large number of new
Irish projects selected to pitch at the event. Irish
companies Brown Bag and Boulder Media are
now internationally owned and producing major
TV animation series for the world market.
New Irish films coming to the market in 2017
include Stephen Burke’s MAZE filmed in Cork and
starring Tom Vaughan-Lawlor and Barry Ward,
Nora Twomey’s animated feature The Breadwinner
currently in production in Kilkenny, and Lance Daly’s
Black ’47 shooting in Connemara and Wicklow.
There are also a number of directorial debuts coming
through, including Mark O’Rowe’s Delinquent
Season starring Cillian Murphy and Andrew Scott,
and two Catalyst projects The Drummer and the
Keeper from Nick Kelly and Kissing Candice from
Aoife McArdle. We also have a number of strong
creative documentaries in the pipeline including Elián
from Ross McDonnell, Feargal Ward’s Outside The
Factory and Blinder Films’ Grace Jones: The Musical
Of My Life. The IFB continues to fund and develop
creative children’s animated television including
Jam Media’s Becca’s Brunch, Salty Dog’s Brewster
the Rooster and Brown Bag’s Gilbert & Sadie.
The cutural industries received a major boost with
the launch of the Creative Ireland programme by
the Taoiseach and the Minister for Arts, with a
particular focus on developing Ireland as a centre
of excellence for media production. This includes
a series of initiatives putting culture and creativity
at the centre of Irish life and in the mainstream
of Irish policy-making. Part of the programme
includes the launch of the audiovisual sector report
commissioned by the Department of Arts working
in partnership with the IFB, the Department of
Communications and the Department of Jobs. The
report will be published in the second quarter of 2017
and will provide robust statistics and goals for the
audiovisual sector. It will also look at strategies to
promote growth and expansion across the sector.
Over the last number of years, Ireland has undergone
a surge in inward production and this year saw Irish/
Canadian TV series, Vikings, continuing to film in
Ashford Studios in Wicklow, alongside the arrival
of major TV series Into the Badlands. The cast of
Star Wars Episode VIII arrived in Ireland to shoot
the latest episode in the saga, filming all along the
Wild Atlantic Way. Hollywood stars Mel Gibson
and Sean Penn visited Ireland to film the big-screen
adaptation of The Professor and the Madman,
shooting in iconic locations around Dublin and Mayo.
2016 was a special year for Irish film and TV
animation, ending with four Golden Globe
nominations for Irish talent. It is living proof that
when supported, Irish creative talent flourishes
throughout the world, building on our reputation
for talent and creativity. We want to wish all
those working in Ireland’s creative industries even
greater success in 2017. Through supporting the
sector, we not only support the lifeblood of an
economy creating jobs and exports, but we help
to establish a platform for important and salient
narratives to be played out — together making
Ireland a greater place in which to work and live.

songs of his Connemara childhood helped
shape this complex and gifted character.
Enigmatic and fascinating, Heaney’s
devotion to his art came at a huge personal
cost to the singer and those closest to him.

Anglo-Irish twins Rachel and Edward share
a strange existence in their crumbling
family estate. Each night, the property
becomes the domain of a sinister presence

Unequivocal about the need for violence
to force Britain out of Ireland, Father Eoin
O’Donnell seals the fate of the young and
impressionable Antaine by convincing
him to fight in the 1916 Rising. Fifty years
later, the reappearance of the nowexperienced gunman Antaine in a divided
Derry throws Father O’Donnell into turmoil.
Once allies, the pair are now placed on
opposite sides of the same agenda.
Agus é ar an intinn go bhfuil gá le foréigean
chun lucht na Breataine a dhíbir as Éirinn,
tá an tAthair Eoin Ó Dónaill freagrach as
cinniúint Antaine, fear óg soghonta, tar éis
dó é a spreagadh chun troda in Éirí Amach
1916. Caoga bliain ar aghaidh agus tá Antaine
anois cleachtaithe le gunnadóireacht. Nuair a
thagann sé chun tosaigh arís i gcathair scoilte
Dhoire cuireann sé an tAthair Ó Donaill
trína chéile. Bhí siad d’aontaobh tráth,

Blair, as well as many US Senators, US
Congressmen and Irish leaders.
This documentary portrays the life and
work of highly influential architect Kevin
Roche, still working at 94. What drives
a modest man, with no interest in fame,
to refuse retirement and continually look
to the future regardless of age? Kevin
Roche’s stated philosophy is that “the
responsibility of the modern architect
is to create a community for a modern
society”, and it is through Roche’s work
that we examine the relationship between
architects, their clients and the public
they ultimately serve.

Condemned to Remember
—
The follow-up film to Close to Evil sees
Irish Holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental
embark on another epic journey. In Eastern
Europe, he confronts the ‘crisis of shame’
that prevents an honest reckoning with
the scale of local ‘collusion’ with the Nazi
extermination project. In Bosnia, Tomi
embraces Muslim survivors of a genocide,
who still search for the bones of their loved
ones. Along the way he puts himself into
the shoes of the ‘new Jews’ and discovers a
strong common bond with refugees fleeing
the hell that is Syria.

Haunted — One Woman’s Story
of Life and Death in the IRA
—
This film brings us deep inside the IRA
and charts one woman’s journey from
passionate idealist to disillusioned cynic,
haunted by the memories of the terrible
things she did for a cause she had once so
strongly believed in. But this is more than
the story of grotesque acts of violence. It
is the intimate and complex portrait of a
revolutionary born to the cause of violent
republicanism.

It is an Irish story but it is also a universal
tale of the journey taken by activists
around the world throughout time. The
radicalisation of young men and women in
support of acts of outrageous violence has
never been more relevant.

Butterfly City
—
The Lithuanian city of Visaginas is only
forty years old but already faces an
uncertain future. The Soviet nuclear
power plant it was created to service
is closing down. This Russian-speaking
city has no other industry. People came
from all over the former USSR to work in
this supposed utopia. Integration with
the rest of Lithuania has proven difficult
and the butterfly-shaped city now faces
irrevocable change.

One man’s journey through life and his
search to reconnect with nature and
culture as primary sources from which we
gain a deeper understanding of ourselves
and our surroundings.
While centred on one man’s life in a small
farming community in the Burren, Co.
Clare, the film explores much deeper
themes – in the modern world, how have
we severed our connection with rural life
and nature? What have we lost? Have we
become empowered or disempowered, free
or enslaved? What happens to us when we
lose our sense of wonder?
