Trinity Sunday Today is Trinity Sunday, a festival different in character from those that have preceded it. Christmas, Easter and Pentecost all celebrate events in ‘salvation history’. Trinity celebrates a doctrine. The Doctrine of the Trinity emerges principally as a result of reflection on the meaning of the events that we celebrate at Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. From the beginning, Christians asked, “what did these events tell us about the nature of God? How can our worship of Jesus Christ as God be compatible with monotheism - belief in one God the Father? Where does the Holy Spirit fit in?” Centuries of discussion and debate, thought and reflection took place before some orthodoxy emerged. The Nicene Creed (composed in 325CE) which we recite every Sunday after the sermon, was one response to debates about the Trinity. In particular, this Creed wanted to refute claims that the Son was ‘made’; the first of the Father’s creations. On the contrary argued others, this would make the Son lesser than the Father, a kind of demigod, not quite the full divinity. The Creed stated therefore, that the Son of God was not made by God the Father, but was with God and was God always. It was a case of God from God, like one torch fire lighting another - light from light. Look for these phrases, and the phrase ‘begotten not made’. Trinity is placed immediately after Pentecost so that the God who, in the events since Christmas, has been celebrated as Father, Son or Holy Spirit, is now celebrated as one God, the Holy Trinity. 3 Music Notes… Church of England Bishop, Reginald Heber (1783-1826) wrote the hymn “Holy, Holy, Holy” (TIS 132) in 1826 for Trinity Sunday celebrations. It is based on the passage in Revelation 6: 8-11, “Day and night without ceasing they sing ‘Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and is, and is to come’...” Composer John Dykes (18231876) wrote the music, and named the tune “Nicea” as tribute to the First Council of Nicea which formalized the doctrine of the Trinity in 325. Retired English Bishop and prolific hymn writer, Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926.) celebrated his 90th birthday last year. His hymn, “When Jesus taught by Galilee” is based on today’s reading from Matthew, where the disciples are commissioned to spread the gospel and make disciples of all nations, “baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” The hymn concludes with a challenge to all, to turn to Christ and to be his followers and friends. Hymn writers John Bell (b.1949) and Graham Maule (b.1958) are members of the Iona Community, Community in Scotland, an ecumenical Christian group known for its commitment to renewal in the church’s worship, and to issues of peace and justice. Their hymn, “Praise with joy the world’s Creator” (TIS 179) was written for a gathering of the World Student Christian Federation in Edinburgh in 1985. The hymn “Lord, your almighty word” (TIS 447) was written by English priest, John Marriott (1780-1825.) The first three verses each contain images of darkness being dispelled by light. In addition, each of these verses refers to a Person of the Trinity. The final verse describes the attributes of the Trinity - Wisdom, Love, Might - and proclaims the triumph of light. ABM Reflection Today Jesus instructs the disciples to baptise ‘in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’. This means that full membership of the Church is a participation in the life of the Trinity. It means that all authentic Christian life is to be found in relationships of unending love. Pray that our Christian life may be authentic and grounded in the divine life. Give thanks for all those who radiate God’s love to others, and pray that we may all become more and more like them. Text: Robert McLean Partnerships Coordinator, ABM © Anglican Board of Mission, 2017 4 Today’s Eucharist THE GATHERING OF GOD’S PEOPLE HYMN 132 Holy, Holy, Holy The Lord be with you. And also with you. A welcome may be offered. At 9.00am, the children and team attending Sunday School come forward and then the prayer is said by everyone. Loving God, We thank You for this opportunity to gather together in Your house. We thank You that in our parish, young people have come to hear Your Word. As they go now to Sunday School we pray that they may safely and confidently grow in faith and love. In your name we pray, Amen. Those attending Sunday School go to the Hall. The service continues on Page 119 of A Prayer Book for Australia with the Prayer of Preparation, the Two Great Commandments, the Kyries, Confession and Absolution and the Hymn of Praise. PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us your servants grace by the confession of a true faith to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity: keep us steadfast in this faith, and evermore defend us from all adversities, for you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 5 A PRAYER FOR DEEPENING KNOWLEDGE God of wisdom, grant, we pray, that the words we hear (and sing) today may be grafted in our hearts so that we may deepen our knowledge and love of you and you may continue to bring forth in us the fruit of good works to the honour and praise of your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. FIRST READING Exodus 34. 1-8 A reading from the book of Exodus The Lord said to Moses, “Cut two tablets of stone like the former ones, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets, which you broke. Be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai and present yourself there to me, on the top of the mountain. No one shall come up with you, and do not let anyone be seen throughout all the mountain; and do not let flocks of herds graze in front of that mountain.” So Moses cut two tablets of stone like the former ones; and he rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tablets of stone. The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name, “The Lord.” The Lord passed before him, and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, yet by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the parents upon the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Commentary: The first set of the Ten Commandments has been broken after Moses caught the people of Israel in an act of idolatry. God now commands Moses to cut two tablets of stone like the former ones for a renewed version of the Commandments. Only Moses can ascend Mt Sinai to ‘meet’ God. The cloud is used frequently in the bible as a metaphor for the presence of God. The declaration of God’s name is significant: in revealing his name, ‘Jehovah’ or ‘Yahweh’, God was giving Moses and the Israelites power to invoke God for help. To know God's name was to know something of His very nature, and thus to be able to exercise some influence over him. The fuller description of God's ‘name’ or character- a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger …’ and so on, is as close to a confessional definition of God as the Old Testament provides. Typically it is concerned with the way God responds to people. The note 6 about visiting the iniquity of the parents upon the children ...to the third and fourth generation is not intended to reflect divine vindictiveness. It is a reflection of ancient legal practices whereby all members of a household were implicated in the guilt incurred by one of their number. The third and fourth generations indicate the extent of the range of members of any one family actually living together in one household. THE SONG OF THE THREE Response: Blessed is the God of our forebears. Blessed are you, the God of our forebears: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed is your holy and glorious name: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever Response Blessed are you, glorious in your holy temple: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed are you who behold the depths: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever Response Blessed are you on the throne of your kingdom: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever. Blessed are you in the heights of heaven: worthy to be praised and exalted for ever . Response SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 13.11–13 A reading from Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians Brothers and sisters, put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Commentary: This is the conclusion of Paul’s second letter to the Christians in Corinth. For Paul, Christians are ‘the saints’, and he ends his letter with a reference to all members of the Trinity: the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit. 7 HYMN When Jesus taught by Galilee he called disciples to his side, his friends and followers to be, to spread his gospel far and wide: the word of life we still proclaim, baptizing in the threefold Name. That Name declares a Father's love, a covenant of grace and care, an everlasting home above, a family on earth to share, beloved and precious in his sight, who walk as children of the light. The Name of Christ becomes our own, our sovereign Lord and Saviour now, to follow him, and him alone, whose sign is printed on our brow; his service share, his cause defend, and so continue to the end. We bear the Holy Spirit's Name, who life and truth and power imparts, who comes, as once in wind and flame, to make his home within our hearts; and daily in our lives increase his fruit of love, and joy and peace. So in the threefold Name today baptized in faith from all our sins, we turn to Christ, our Truth and Way, the Life in whom our life begins; to Christ who saves and sets us free, his followers and friends to be. Text: Timothy Dudley-Smith Used with permission, Word of Life International – Licence No. 1635 Tune: “Melita” TIS 138 8 GOSPEL Alleluia! Alleluia! Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, To God who is, who was, and who is to come. Alleluia! Matthew 28.16–20 The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew, chapter 28 beginning at the 16th verse Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Commentary: The greatest moments of divine self-revelation take place on a mountain, whether Mt Sinai or here on a mountain where Christ supernaturally reveals himself for the last time to the eleven Apostles. (Judas has killed himself.) Jesus commands them to go into all the world baptising: the only explicit command of Jesus to baptise. This passage shows all the marks of early church interpretation. In the Acts baptism is at first only in the name of Jesus Christ. Only later does the Church baptise in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, as recorded by Matthew and as we also do so today. Sermon The Reverend Julie Worrall A silence for reflection follows the sermon. The Nicene Creed, on page 123, may be said. 9 THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE God of the universe, we pray that you pardon our sins and bring peace to your world.
