Historically New Orleans has been a vibrant, bursting at the seams melting pot of a
city that famously inspires great music, great cuisine and great people. It has also
become a city close to the hearts of many from Ginghamsburg.

In 2005, over 50 levee failures and numerous levee breaches caused severe flooding
in 80% of the city of New Orleans; the death toll and structural damage continued for
several days after hurricane Katrina had passed. Ginghamsburg responded then - and
continues to send teams to aid in this vital recovery mission.

As part of our mission to work hard, study hard, play hard and sleep hard, our New
Orleans Work team will continue to aid in the hurricane recovery in partnership with
Epworth Ministries in 2015-2016. Epworth assigns teams from across America to
rebuild and refurbish selected homes throughout the New Orleans region.

We will also partner with St. Mark’s United Methodist Church located within the
French Quarter to expand our ministry focus. The church is recognized as a
“reconciling” church and seeks to embody the truth that all people are the children of
God. Their 100+ years of history is a dramatic story of dedication, mission, and a
story of triumph over adversity and persistence in the face of daunting obstacles.
We have committed to helping the congregation in refurbishing projects along with
creating initiatives for women and youth of the neighborhood and beyond.

The rich cultural heritage of the French Quarter is the focus of our immersion study
as we explore God’s word, taking time for journaling and reflection and seeking to
better understand the needs associated with injustice, inequality and prejudice.
