But as we get older we can develop illnesses like diabetes. Older people can also forget things and be confused. We want to make sure everyone living in Dorset has good care. We need to make sure there are enough doctors and nurses to look after everyone. 3 And, we need to make sure the NHS doesn’t run out of money. What are our plans for the main hospitals in Dorset? We have three (3) main hospitals in Dorset: The Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Dorchester Hospital. Poole Hospital. 4 All three (3) hospitals have the same services, for example accident and emergency departments, but they find it hard to treat everyone on time. Bournemouth Hospital. We think we can save more lives if one (1) hospital has a major accident and emergency department and treats people who have such bad injuries or illnesses that their lives may be in danger. We think that Bournemouth Hospital should be the major accident and emergency hospital. This is because more people live in the east of Dorset, and that means it would be easier for more people to get there by ambulance. You will still be able to go to Poole Hospital for minor injuries such as: • broken bones • strains and sprains • bites • and burns 5 Do you agree or disagree that Bournemouth should be the major emergency hospital? I agree Please tick one (1) box I agree a bit OK I don’t agree I don’t know Do you have any comments? Please write them in the space below: 6 Poole Hospital. Another hospital would treat patients who can wait for their operations and appointments. We call this planned care. For example, you would go here if your doctor thinks you need to, for planned appointments or for minor injuries, like broken bones. We think Poole Hospital should be the hospital for planned care. This is because there are good train and bus services to Poole. You can get to Poole by yourself if you have a minor injury or are not seriously ill. 7 Do you agree or disagree that Poole should be the hospital for planned care? I agree Please tick one (1) box I agree a bit OK I don’t agree I don’t know Do you have any comments? Please write them in the space below: 8 Dorchester Hospital. We think Dorchester Hospital should continue to treat: • accident and emergencies • and planned care. This is because there are a lot of small towns and villages around Dorchester and we don’t want people to travel too far. Do you agree or disagree that Dorchester should be: • an accident and emergency hospital • and a planned hospital? I agree Please tick one (1) box I agree a bit OK I don’t agree I don’t know 9 Do you have any comments? Please write them in the space below: How could community hospitals help with appointments? Some of the treatment at Dorset’s main hospitals could be done better in your local community hospital, which is close to where you live. We asked people about community hospitals in the past. They told us it is a good idea to have services like outpatient appointments closer to home This would be for things like: • diabetes • skin care • physiotherapy • and foot and hearing clinics 10 Do you agree or disagree it would be better to have more services – like outpatient appointments, tests and scans – closer to home? I agree Please tick one (1) box I agree a bit OK I don’t agree I don’t know Do you have any comments? Please write them in the space below: 11 Changes to community hospitals. To bring more care closer to home, we would have to make some changes to the 13 smaller community hospitals across Dorset. We call these community hospitals now. In the future we will call them community hubs. Community hubs. We want to have teams of doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers and volunteers working together. All of these hubs would have outpatient appointments, tests and scans. 12 Seven (7) of the bigger community hubs would have beds for people who need them. These would be at: • Blandford • Bridport • Poole • Sherborne • Swanage • Weymouth • Wimborne Five (5) would not have beds. These would be at: • Christchurch • Dorchester • Portland • Shaftesbury • Wareham Closures. Some hospitals may be closed. We asked some experts to look at: • mum and baby services • and sick children’s overnight beds at Dorchester Hospital. They told us that in future mum and baby services and sick children’s overnight beds need to have more expert doctors and nurses to make them safe. This could happen if doctors and nurses at Dorchester Hospital work with Yeovil Hospital. Yeovil Hospital is the nearest to Dorchester that has mum and baby and children’s overnight beds. If this can’t be done, mums and babies who need a doctor at the birth and very sick children will be treated at the new major emergency hospital which we plan to have at Bournemouth. 29 What do you think? Do you agree or disagree that the hospitals at Dorchester and Yeovil should work together to have mother and baby and children’s overnight beds?
