Also check out the space trivia for our salute to the 45th anniversary of Apollo 11. Zany Holidays! July is “Nectarine & Garlic Month” July 17th to 23rd is “National Zoo-Keeper Week" And July 23rd is “Hot Enough for Ya? Day” Providence Prevails The first battlefield victory of the American Revolution was the result of planning, bravery and a bit of luck. A spy had learned that Washington was crossing the Delaware River to secretly attack Trenton where the Hessian Loyalist forces were encamped. This spy attempted to deliver the urgent news to Colonel Rall, the Loyalist commander, but he had left strict orders that no one disturb his drinking and card game. The written warning was stuffed into the colonel's pocket and forgotten. The patriot attack came as a complete surprise, the Hessian army was captured and the rest is . . . well, history! Insurance Word of the Month "Mortality Table" A table which mathematically predicts the likelihood of death at any given age. Be a Better Buyer! The CSO mortality table (stands for "Commissioner's Standard Ordinary Mortality Table) is a compilation of decades of statistics on death and its causes. This table is the basis for all longevity-related insurance products (life insurance, long term care, annuity payouts). And is approved by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Although all insurance companies use the same mortality figures, they do not apply the same rates to those numbers. Good news! Life insurance rates have dropped! The most recent mortality table showed that people are living longer, thus reducing premiums – but only on policies purchased since the last table was issued. Do think you are paying too much for your current life insurance policy? It is possible you could pay less for the same size policy or get or more insurance for the same price. Replacing a life insurance policy is tricky business. Definitely consult an honest professional when considering ANY changes to a cash-value life insurance contract. And NEVER cancel an existing policy until the new one is issued and in your hands! Quote of the Month “I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than those attending too small a degree of it." Thomas Jefferson Happy Birthday America! Independence had been declared on July 2nd. We celebrate on the 4th because that is the date on the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson described the White House as "a great stone house, big enough for two emperors, one pope and the grand lama in the bargain." At the Constitutional Convention, a member proposed that "the standing army be restricted to no more than 5,000 men." George Washington remarked it was fine with him so long as the convention agreed to an amendment prohibiting armies from invading the United States with more than 3,000 troops. On July 20, 1966, Apollo 11 was the first space flight to land on the moon; however, man's fascination with space travel predates that historic event by decades. Did you know these space terms predate the space age? 1880 1894 1924 1928 1934 astronaut spaceship space suit rocket ship star ship 1936 1937 1942 1954 space station blastoff spaceman time warp Bet You Didn't Know! When Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin joined Neal Armstrong on the moon he had to be mindful not to close the hatch behind him. Why? When designing the lunar module, weight was extremely important, so much so that the door handle was omitted. If Aldrin had closed the hatch door upon exiting, both astronauts may have been stranded on the moon! Most Unusual Pudding Recipe In 1974, the Welsh freighter, Cardiff, was carrying two cargos: lumber and tapioca powder. When it was about to dock, the lumber caught fire. The ships crew brought the blaze under control and kept it confined to the lumber hold. Unfortunately, the shore patrol pumped in thousands of additional gallons of water and the extra water seeped into the area where the tapioca was stored. That gave them a new and bigger problem; heat from the lumber fire cooked the tapioca goo into pudding, several million gallons of it! It expanded and threatened to burst the ship's hull. 500 dump trucks were required to relieve the ship of its cargo, the biggest batch of tapioca pudding ever! And In Closing...
