Chapter 1 Math Guide

Chapter 1 Math Guide
I can describe the value of a digit
182,562
The 6 is in the tens place. 6 tens = 60
The 2 is in the thousands place. 2 thousands = 2,000
394,482
The 4 in the thousands place is 10 times as much as the 4 in the
hundreds place. It is one spot to the left. It would take 10
hundreds to make a thousand.
847,588
The 8 in the tens place is 10 times as much as the 8 in the ones
place. It is one spot to the left. It would take 10 ones to make one
ten.
627,909
The 9 in the hundreds place is 100 times as much as the 9 in the
ones place. It would take 100 ones to make 1 hundred.
712,193
The 1 in the ten thousands places is 100 times as much as the 1 in
the hundreds place. It is two spots to the left. It would take 100
hundreds to make 1 ten thousand.

Chapter 1 Math Guide
I can read and write numbers through hundred thousands
Standard Form:
193,292
Word Form:
This is also how the number is read out loud. Each
section/period is separated by a comma. You read the
numbers together in a period.
One hundred ninety three thousand,
two hundred ninety two
Expanded Form:
Each digit is broken down and given the full value.
These values are then put into an addition sentence.
100,000 + 90,000 + 3,000 + 200 + 90 + 2
Standard Form:
852,194
Word Form:
eight hundred fifty two thousand, one hundred ninety
four
Expanded Form:
800,000 + 50,000 + 2,000 + 100 + 90 + 4
Standard Form:
17, 409
Word Form:
seventeen thousand, four hundred nine
Expanded Form:
10,000 + 7,000 + 400 + 9

Chapter 1 Math Guide
I can compare and order numbers
Compare the digit in each place value until the digits are different. Start with the biggest
place.
528,295 ___ 528,195 Hundred thousands: both are 5
Ten thousands: both are 2
Thousands: both are 8
Hundreds: 2 is greater than 1, so…. 528,295 > 528,195
595,293 - 85,193 - 583,495
Hundred thousands: 5 is the same and the middle number is the
smallest since there is nothing in this spot.
Ten thousands: 8 is smaller than 9, so…
85,193 < 583,495 < 595, 293

Chapter 1 Math Guide
I can round numbers
Find the number you are rounding and circle it. Look to the neighbor (to the right). If the
neighbor is 4 or less, you let it rest. If the 5 or more, you raise the score. The number you
circled is what you lest rest or raise. All numbers to the right become zeros.
4 7 5, 1 9 4
The neighbor is 9. This is bigger than 5, so you raise the score.
475,200
8 5 2, 4 8 1
The neighbor is 2. This is 4 or less, so you let it rest. 5 stays a 5.
850,000

Chapter 1 Math Guide
I can add whole numbers
Line up the digits before you begin. Starting on the right, add each digit. If the numbers
create a two-digit number, remember to regroup.
1 1 1 1
8+1=9
5 8 5, 4 3 8
9 + 2 = 11. Leave the 2 and regroup the 1
+ 3 4 7, 5 9 1
9 3302 9
5 + 4 + regrouped 1 = 10. Leave the 0 and regroup the 1
7 + 5 + regrouped 1 = 13. Leave the 3 and regroup the 1
8 + 4 + regrouped 1 = 13. Leave the 3 and regroup the 1
5 + 3 + regrouped 1 = 9

Chapter 1 Math Guide
I can subtract whole numbers
Line up the digits before you begin. Starting on the right, subtract the top number by the
bottom number. If the bottom number is bigger, go one spot to the left and regroup.
13
1 3 15
5 11
2 4 5, 9 6 1
- 1 6 7, 5 2 6
0 7 8, 4 3 5
You cannot subtract 6 from 1. Regroup the 6 next door. Leave 5 in the tens place and
add 10 to the ones place. This gives you 11 in the ones place. 11—6 = 5
5—2= 3
9—5 = 4
You cannot subtract 7 from 5. Regroup the 4 next door. Leave 3 in the ten thousands
place and add 10 to the thousands place. This gives you a 15 in the thousands place
15—7 = 8
You cannot subtract 6 from 4. Regroup the 2 next door. Leave a 1 in the hundred
thousands place and add 10 to the ten thousands place. This gives you a 13 in the ten
thousands place. 13 - 6 = 7
