(up to 10 Points)
Read Hughes’ “Dream” Poems below and choose one of the two options that follow.
A Dream Deferred
-- Langston Hughes
Dreams
-- Langston Hughes
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over Like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
Like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
Option 1:
Read the poems “Dreams” and “A Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes (below).
Choose a strong piece of imagery from each poem. On a standard 8 1/2” by 11” sheet
of computer paper, draw the images you chose, overlapping them to create a Venn
Diagram. Then, compare and contrast the two poems. When comparing/contrasting,
consider the following:
 The themes/messages of the poems
 The utilization of figurative language and literary devices
 Incorporation of poetic devices (see Poetry 101)
Be creative and remember to check over your work before turning it in.

can be created in any format (picture/magazine advertisement, video/commercial,
radio/audio, etc.) but MUST incorporate the lines of the poem you choose.
When creating the advertisement, consider the following:
 The TYPE of add you are creating and the importance of visuals, audio,
etc.
 WHAT you are selling and how you want to sell it
 How you will incorporate the poem’s lines and meaning
 The ways in which your advertisement will motivate or inspire the
audience.
