Robert E. Weyhmuller, in the book ‘Beyond the Bus Stop’ reminds us of the importance
of practicing what you have learned. If you’re like most parents, you probably ask your
child to tell you what went on in school each day. What you might not realize is that
those questions can actually help your child master and remember what was learned.
People remember 10% of what they read. They remember 20% of what they hear. They
recall 30% of what they see and 50% of what they see and hear. But they will remember 70% of what they say as they talk aloud. And they recall 90% of what they say as
they perform a task, so get your child to show you what he learned in school today.
When he is doing his home version of show and tell, he’ll be mastering the concepts.
Bumblebee Challenge
This game may help your child build his or her
basic math skills.
Materials: a deck of playing cards or handmade
number cards, paper, pencil. Start by making a
special deck using all four aces, 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s,
6’s. The aces count as ones. Each player lists
the numbers 1 through 12 on a piece of paper.
The object of the game? - to cross off all the
numbers on your list. With the special deck face
down, take turns drawing two cards. Players
use their cards in one of three ways to cross
number off their lists. For example, drawing a 2
and 5 allows you to cross off both the 2 and 5.
A second way is to add 2 and 5 to cross off the
7. Or subtract 2 from 5 to cross off the 3. The
first person to cross off all the number wins. For
a variation on this game, dice may be used in
place of the playing cards.
