YMCA of Middle Tennessee Job Description Title: Grant Writer Department: Philanthropy Center: Association Services Date: 08/27/15 Status: Exempt Salary: $45,000-50,000 Summary: The Grant Writer will be responsible for the full range of activities required to write, prepare and submit proposals for external funding that supports YMCA programs and services. This position works with the Director of Sponsored Programs, Data and Research Manager, Accounting Manager, Program Directors and other staff in order to ensure proper submission and acceptance of external funded grants, contracts and donor/sponsor restricted funds. Duties and Responsibilities: Serves as an advocate/ambassador for the cause of the YMCA: Strengthening our Community through Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility Models YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility Manages the full range of activities required to write, prepare and submit competitive proposals for external funding including: o meeting requirements of the grants calendar and timelines for submission o securing program data from the Data and Research Manager for proposals o working with the Accounting Manager to verify program budgets for proposals o ensuring that all programmatic grants applications contain appropriate outcomes/outputs and data collection processes verified by the Data and Research Manager o managing the internal approval process and submission of approved proposal. Proactively identifies grant opportunities for the YMCA’s outreach programs and membership centers Recommends best practices for program models including inputs, outputs, outcomes, measurement/evaluation tools. Assists in responses to audit or inquiry regarding any grant, contract, or other sponsored programs Supports staff education on the regulations and characteristics of grant funding and how they are reflected in Sponsored Programs’ policies and procedures Attends pre-proposal conference/webinar and prepares and submits Letter of Intent to sponsor. Communicates with sponsor (ask questions, clarify issues, build relationships, etc.). Assists with revisions of proposals that are underfunded. Assists in sponsored programs training activities for YMCA staff. Education / Experience: Bachelor's degree required, graduate degree preferred Minimum 3 yrs work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience applicable to the duties listed Proven record of successful grant writing at the foundation and government level Minimum 18 years of age Certifications Required: Pre-hire: complete YMCA of Middle TN application for employment, new hire packet and Praesidium Child Abuse Detection / Prevention training Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: This position requires an individual with excellent communication skills and an enjoyment of the writing process. S/he should have strong writing skills along with the ability to do research, synthesize data, and use this information to develop strong proposals. S/he should have the ability to follow directions and multi-task. S/he should have the ability to work independently and as part of a team to fulfill goals of the department. S/he should have the ability to respond quickly to external funding opportunities, to changing priorities and meet tight deadlines. S/he should have flexibility and ability to adapt to shifting duties while maintaining focus and follow-through. S/he should have must be able to work with a highly diverse work force and have the ability to work comfortably with a variety of program staff at various levels of the organization. This person will have a strong, pragmatic approach to designing and managing processes & systems required getting things done, and must be an excellent communicator - able to influence and build meaningful relationships outside of the sponsored program function and across all levels of the organization.
