® Themes for January Kids in the Kitchen - Kid-friendly kitchen tasks will be introduced in this theme! The children will prepare their own snacks and learn about nutrition and cooking through a variety of food-related games and activities. Amazing Arctic - The children will learn that some places stay cold and wintery all year. Our discussions and activities will explore polar animals and people. We’ll add to our snowy fun with Olympic Games just like those in the World Eskimo Indian Olympics! Creative Creations - The children will be encouraged to use their active imaginations and creativity throughout this theme! The sky will be the limit with the open-ended art projects and activities they will be doing. Their own creativity may surprise them! Activitie s fo r Ho m e! • Ask your child to help in the kitchen. They can wash fresh fruits and vegetables, stir ingredients, or even use a butter knife to slice or chop soft foods such as boiled eggs or bananas. Talk about kitchen safety. What appliances and utensils are “off limits”? • Review numbers you see on signs and in books. Practice counting steps, toys, or items from the grocery store. Children can also count napkins, plates, and silverware when they help set the table. • If you live in a snowy area, play outside in the snow. Ride a sled down a hill, build a snowman, or make a snow fort. How does the snow feel? If your area is not snowy, talk about what snow might be like. Enjoy a snow cone or an ice cream treat together instead! • Reinforce the color blue. Look for different blue items as you sort and fold the laundry together this week. How many blue socks or shirts are in the basket? • Provide a variety of art supplies for your child to use freely such as crayons, colored paper, glue, scissors, and paint. Point out illustrations and sculptures wherever you see them. Talk about how the artist uses shapes, textures, and colors.
