ES1 Physical Oceanography Unit: Act# 1
yay, bonus pt. because___________
oops, no HO, book, heading this
date__________=MP
Purpose: To see what we already know about oceans, as we start this unit
Materials: World Atlas (class copy or on class website), textbook, and your experience about oceans.
Procedure: Read directions. If needed, after handed back, finish at home using atlas on class Ocean Activities pg.
Part 1. IDENTIFYING OCEANS BY SHAPE
These are sketches of the 4 major ocean basins (Pacific, Arctic, Atlantic, and Indian). Try to name them
from your experience, then use the world map, p 2&3 in the red atlas, p 14-15 in blue atlas, or p. 471 in your
textbook to check and complete the identification. Answer the question written by each ocean also.

Part 2. NAMING WORLD OCEANS
Although Earth’s oceans are all interconnected, and water circulates between ocean basins, regions within the ocean are given different names. Put a star by to the right of the name of any sea you have never heard of
before! At home, you can complete this part from the map on the class website, Oceans Unit, Activities, or use a
free block in the class or library to use an atlas. http://www.mapsofworld.com/world-ocean-map-large.htm.
Open the activity so you can see both sheets at once. Look at the numbered locations on the map on the next
page which show major geographic divisions of the world oceans. You must do either all the right or left seas, depending where you sat at your table, more for extra credit AFTER the rest of the activity is finished. Use the atlas
to locate each, and write the number on the map next to the the appropriate feature listed below. You will need to
use the map index to find larger scale maps to find some of the smaller seas. The boldface number is the page,
letter/number locates the feature on the map grid. Some small features are in inset maps with a second
set of locater numbers and letters which are lower case, not capitals

NAMING WORLD OCEANS MAP: Label the 4 major oceans by name on the map on the next page of this packet,
as well as the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean. 4 pts.
Use textbook ocean currents map on p. 521 to draw in and label by name one major warm and one cold ocean
surface currents for at least 3 of the 4 major oceans on the map on the next page also. 8 pts. Use red or orange
for warm and blue or purple for cold currents.North Atlantic Current is part of Gulf Stream. Which 2 currents affect New England the most (one warm and one cold)?
______________________________ & ______________________________________
Where on the globe do cold currents generally come from?_________________________________
Where do warm currents originate?__________________________________
In which direction (Clockwise or counter-clockwise) do surface currents move in each hemisphere?
Northern Hemisphere:____________________________
Southern Hemisphere:____________________________
Use what you learned in the weather unit to hypothesize what causes the currents to be deflected and how they
affect climate:
