food processing and cold storage risks. It was developed to
specifically respond to the insured’s unique needs. In addition to
standard equipment breakdown coverages, our form provides:
• Indemnification for Perishable Goods losses caused by
Utility Interruption without the typical waiting period
applied
• Broad Valuation including:
• Customized valuation for property of others in the
insured’s control
• Selling price for finished stock
• Control of Damaged Property providing the insured with
the right to determine whether damaged covered property
can be reprocessed or sold
• An expanded definition of Covered Property including:
• Non-owned product that the insured has a contractual
responsibility to insure
• Product stored in refrigerated trucks or trailers while at a
covered premises
• Broad Perishable Goods Coverage including:
• Expenses to reduce or avert a perishable goods loss
• Expenses to properly dispose of contaminated product
• Claims Preparation Costs to assist the insured in
quantifying their property damage, business income and
perishable goods loss
Perishable Goods Coverage may also be extended to apply
to the insured’s product in storage at non-owned private
or public cold storage warehouse locations. Full limits that
match the insured’s exposed values are available.
Perishable Goods Claims Scenarios
University Lab
A university research lab houses biological materials at
low storage temperatures in several commercial freezers.
Maintaining specific storage temperatures is critical to the
preservation of biological characteristics of the materials.
• A compressor failed on one of the freezers compromising
the stringent temperature requirements.
• A perishable goods loss was paid based upon the
university’s pre-determined valuation of the materials at
the age when the failure occurred.
Ice Cream Manufacturer
An ice cream manufacturing and storage facility housing ice
cream products suffered a covered loss of electrical power
that lasted 9 hours. As a result, required storage temperature
parameters were breached and the insured determined the
ice cream no longer met its quality standards.
• While perishable goods waiting periods are common
within Equipment Breakdown Coverage Forms, there is
no perishable goods waiting period on the Up + Running
Coverage Form.
• The claim was paid based upon the selling price of the
damaged ice cream as well as disposal costs.
