Scientific Notation
Scientific Notation- a shortened way of writing numbers that are VERY
large or VERY small
Factor is between 1 and 10 8.7 x 10⁵ power of 10 written in exponential form
Scientific notation  standard form
* Multiplying by a positive power of 10, the decimal moves to the
RIGHT
*Multiplying by a negative power of 10, decimal moves to the LEFT
*The exponent tells you how many places to move the decimal
Examples Positive exponents: move the decimal to the RIGHT (VERY
LARGE NUMBERS)
5.34 x 10⁴ = 53,400
3.27 x 10⁵= 327,000
3.174 x 10² = 317.4
Examples Negative exponents: move the decimal to the LEFT (VERY
SMALL NUMBERS)
6.1 x 10⁻² = .061
8.83 x 10⁻⁴= .000883
4.43 x 10⁻⁶= .00000443
You try!
3.725 x 10⁷=
2.98 x 10⁴=
3.87 x 10⁵=
1.9 x 10⁻⁴=
6.799 x 10⁻⁵=
