Friends 2016 Book Sale Breaks All Records!
The annual used book, cd and dvd sale of the Friends
of the Westfield Memorial Library was a huge success. Both donations and memberships sold broke the
previous records. Most importantly, the Friends
raised over $18,000--an increase of over 20% from
the year before--for the library and such popular
offerings as the series of children's programs and the
free passes offered to 20 museums in New York and
New Jersey.
The Friends thank the generous donors, enthusiastic
customers and the more than 100 volunteers, from
those in their teens or younger to those in their 80's or
older, whose very hard work made the sale possible.
The Friends also thank the Board of Education, First
Baptist Church, Department of Public Works, Trader
Joe's and Shoprite for their assistance with the sale.
Please note that the Friends will hold their popular
Children’s Book Sale October 27-29, with donations
accepted October 25-26. For information or to volunteer, please contact [email protected].

falls out with friends, colleagues and allies, and is sucked deeper and deeper into a labyrinth of lies and guilt in
his search for the truth. But what he ultimately brings to light will change the country forever.

Two Creativity Workshops by Wendy Rosenberg!
“In Your Hands” on Wednesday, June 1 at 7:00 pm and
“It’s About Time” on Wednesday, June 15 at 7:00 pm
Wendy Rosenberg is an Expressive Art Education Facilitator with
21 years of experience as a poet. In the first workshop she invites you to explore through writing, poetry, and a hands-on art activity, the things you know
first hand, have kept close at hand, made by hand, touched, or, perhaps, had in
the palm of your hand. You do not have to be experienced at art or writing.
In the second workshop you’ll examine concepts such as “never having enough
time” or “not finding the time,” and just possibly change your thoughts about
time. In this workshop, we will use creativity to explore our personal relationship with time, and we’ll delve into our quantitative and qualitative experiences
with time. Be prepared for a creative evening.

Enigma and Code Breaking in World War II:
What Really Happened?
on Monday, June 6 at 7:00 pm
In honor of D-Day, author and historian James Gannon will present
code breaking and Enigma's impact on World War II. The gripping
movie, “The Imitation Game,” brought to light Alan Turing's deciphering machine, Enigma. However, it didn't tell the entire story of the creation of the machine and
its contributors. Mr. Gannon will discuss the details left out in the movie, and the Enigma's effect on
three major campaigns including the defeat of the German U-boats in the North Atlantic, the defeat
of Romel in North Africa, and the successful landing in Normandy on D-Day. In all of these events,
code breaking was central, as were double agents and visual and audio deception.
A graduate of Gonzaga University and American University, James Gannon is a former awardwinning producer and writer of documentaries for NBC News and Channel 13. He is the author of
“Stealing Secrets, Telling Lies: How spies and code breakers helped shape the Twentieth Century”
as well as several other books.
