The term started off rocky, but I believe the second half will be smoother. I do want to take this opportunity to encourage all members to get involved and help make the Tidewater Chapter a great one. There are several ways you can get involved. Attend Chapter meetings, serve on a committee, chair a committee, and become a board member. You will get out of it what you put into it. Over the next few months I will be highlighting the duties of the various committees and the board of directors. I want each member, especially our new members, to be-‐ come familiar with the responsibilities of each station and to seriously think about filling them. Look for the first positions to be highlighted in the February issue of the Tidewater Times. Our Nominating Committee will be formed soon. They are responsible to contact the members for board positions and getting the qualifications of those that agree to run. The committee chairs are asked by the incoming Presi-‐ dent. I plan to run for President and would love to be able to present a full slate of officers to the membership. On another note, I invite everyone that takes photos at our Chapter, Division, and International events to share them on Facebook. The Chapter has a Facebook page and I would love to have things posted. If you are not into Facebook, then please feel free to send me the pictures at [email protected]. We often set out with good intentions but we often fall short of making those resolu-‐ tions a reality. Why, you ask? Because we fail to set goals. Failing to set a goal is similar to going to visit someone and not having their address. You drive around in circles until you ultimately give up and go back to wherever it is you came from. Goal setting must be very specific. You need to know exactly where you are going, how you intend to get there, and when you are going to arrive. Remember, vague goals produce vague results. This reminds me of a cartoon I once saw that had a distraught woman at the sperm bank and the man ďĞŚŝŶĚƚŚĞĚĞƐŬƐĂLJƐ͕͞ůŽŽŬ͕ůĂĚLJ-‐ LJŽƵ͛ƌĞ the one who asked for a famous movie star with dark hair, strong nose and deep set ĞLJĞƐ͙dŚĞƉŽŽƌǁŽŵĂŶŚĂĚĂďĂďLJDŝĐŬĞLJ Mouse in the stroller behind her. See yourself in that cute little swimsuit lying on the beach next summer or walking across that stage getting that diploma that you have wanted to get for so long. The only things these parents (and TLC) are doing for their kids is permanently damaging their well-‐being and their ability to function as normal adults when they grow up. But back to how these kidsploitation shows perfectly illustrate how we have lost our collective minds. On the shows, the parents and the teachers drill into their kids the expectation that they be perfect. Mean-‐ while, the parents and teachers spend half the show cursing each other, waving their index fingers from side to side, doing that head/neck-‐bob thing, and telling the cam-‐ ĞƌĂǁŚĂƚ͛ƐǁƌŽŶŐǁŝƚŚĞǀĞƌLJŽŶĞĞdžĐĞƉƚ themselves. Then we wonder why our kids are so stressed. problems we face today. Meanwhile, we ignore the fact that we (and when I say we, of course, I mean I) slugged our way through high school, quit half a dozen activities, graduated college with a two-‐point-‐oh-‐my-‐God-‐I-‐am-‐not-‐going-‐to-‐ make-‐it grade point average, held half a dozen odd jobs before beginning a career, and changed careers three times, some-‐ times by choice. Yet we expect perfection from our kids. Why? To make up for our own imperfec-‐ tions? To compete with the perfect parents down the block? I enrolled our daughter Madison in piano lessons. After many enjoyable years of that, Madison just wanted to play piano. It took me a while to figure out that you can play piano without taking piano lessons. Today Madison plays piano every day and she is happy. We also expect perfection from others, starting with our political leaders.
