Spelling Activity 1: Simultaneous Oral Spelling
Aim
To practise spelling of frequently-used words.

10 minutes
Materials needed


Flash cards with words from Dolch or Fry word lists
Simultaneous Oral Spelling printout (Click here for printout)
Instructions

Pick a flash card. Ask your child to look at the word and listen to you as you read the
word.
Ask your child to repeat the word aloud.
Cover the flash card and ask your child to orally spell the word as he/she spells the
word in the air with 2 fingers. Do this 3 times.
Ask your child to write the word while simultaneously saying the letters, and read the
word he/she has spelt.
Uncover the flash card and ask your child to check his/her spelling.
a. If spelt correctly, praise your child and proceed to the next word.
b. If spelt incorrectly, repeat steps 2 to 5 until your child spells the word correctly.
Remember to praise your child for effort even if the word is spelt incorrectly.
