CDC OBESITY FACTS
 More than one-third of U.S. adults 78.6 million (34.9%) are obese.
 In 2011-2012, 8.4% of 2- to 5-year-olds had obesity compared with
17.7% of 6- to 11-year-olds and 20.5% of 12- to 19-year-olds

In 2009–2010, over 78 million U.S. adults and about 12.5 million
U.S. children and adolescents were obese.
 In 2008, medical costs associated with obesity were estimated at
$147 billion; the medical costs for people who are obese were
$1,429 higher than those of normal weight. NASPE reports by 2018
$344 billion will be spent on health care due to obesity (21% of
total health care spending).


 No state met the nation's Healthy People 2010 goal to lower
obesity prevalence to 15%.

itself doesn’t make you smarter, but it puts the brain of the learners in the
optimal position for them to learn.”

to benefit memory, attentiveness, and increase verbal and mathematics skills
and reading readiness.”
Shape of the Nation Report (2010) – “Physical activity comes in many forms
and there is something for everyone. Physical activity must be a part of
everyday life.”
US News (5/27/2012) Physical Education Is Good for Kids' Grades,
Study Finds -Ingegerd, Ericsson of Malmo University, said in a news
release. "We scientifically confirm here that daily timetabled physical
education and adapted motor skills training not only improves motor
skills but also school achievement."
 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign(6/13/2013)- New
research finds that physical fitness can enhance learning and
memory in children
WHY USE PLUS 5 FITNESS?
• It’s a great way to add more exercise into the
school day and sets a tone that fitness is important.
• It’s a good way to teach children the importance of
daily exercise. (Teacher modeled)
• It is part of a Comprehensive School Activity Plan.
• It aligns with the “Let’s Move” campaign.
• It aligns with NASPE Standards
• It can help fill mandates (20 min daily exercise)
• It guarantees 25 minutes of exercise a week, 100
minutes a month, and up to 900 minutes per year.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Each routine is four to five minutes long
Most any restricted space is usable.
It’s easy for children to learn.
20 Routines, progress from a slow learning pace of
115 bpm to 128 bpm.
