25th September 2015 - Deansfield | Primary School

Friday Flier Number 574 25th September 2015 http://www.deansfield.greenwich.sch.uk/
Year 6 kicked off our Educational
Visits Programme with a visit to the
Science Museum on Monday. The
children enjoyed their visits
to the Energy
Gallery and
Launchpad
Exhibition as
well as attending a Science Show called “Smack
Bang Wallop!” full
of ‘live’
experiments—
plenty of
explosions, smoke and colours! Josh told
us “they showed us how many
different materials could be used
to make fire—even flour!”. Josie
liked “the hands on ac vi es best
and how they taught us a lot
about energy and other subjects”.
Rohan “loved the Science Museum and how they taught us new
facts and I liked the interac ve
things”. A very educationally rewarding time for everyone involved.
We hope you have made a note in
your diaries for the visits we have
planned throughout the year. Our
next trip out will be Year 3’s visit to
the Eltham Environmental Centre
on 6th October where children become ‘soil detectives’ for the day.
This visit is followed by Year 5’s visit
to the National Maritime Museum
at Greenwich to attend a Vikings
Workshop. This visits takes place on
12th October. Please ensure you
return the permission slip at the bottom
of your trip letter to the school office
which authorises you child to participate in our Educational Visitors / Visits
programme. As you are aware, we
need your financial support to ensure
the programme proceeds as planned,
so please make a payment as soon as
possible. We thank you if you have already made a payment in respect of
your child’s trips. Please also remember
that children need a drink as part of
their packed lunch whilst on trips.
Secondary school visits by Year 6 children are in full swing. Please remember
to let the school office know when your
child will be absent from school making
a school visit. Please also remember
that your child’s secondary school application must be made online to the
borough in which you live. This must be
made by 31st October otherwise your
child’s secondary school place will in
jeopardy.
Wales Residential School Journey is almost here for Year 6 children. Children
leave for Wales on Monday 12th October.
Please remember that the Journey must
be paid for in advance. If you have been
asked by Pupil Benefit section to provide
more evidence to enable you to obtain
the grant, please do so without delay as
we need to know you are eligible before
the Journey. If you bring your evidence
to the school office we will be able to
scan and email this across for you. If you
have been asked to do this, please contact the school office to let us know the
current position. Many thanks.
Please look out for letters going out today
about online payments. The system is
currently up and running for dinner payments and will soon be extended to other areas. Watch this space!

Maths Challenge! Last week’s puzzle was: Horace
was looking through the family photograph album,
which has a photo of each of his parents, each of his
grandparents, all the way up to each of his greatgreat-great-grandparents.
How many photos is that?
The solution is: 2 parents, 4 grandparents
8 great-grandparents, 16 great-great-grandparents,
32 great-great-great-grandparents
2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 = 62 photos in all.

This week’s puzzle is: Tom asked his Granny how old
she was. Rather than giving him a straight answer,
she replied: "I have 6 children, and there are 4 years
between each one and the next. I had my first child
(your Uncle Peter) when I was 19. Now the youngest
one (Your Auntie Jane) is 19 herself. That's all I'm telling you!" How old is Tom's Granny?
Look out for the solution next week!
Music at Deansfield: We were sad to learn this week
that Holly Cook is leaving us later in the term to develop her playing career. We are sorry to lose Holly but
glad to learn that our current tutors are able to expand their present tuition to take over Holly’s children.
More news about this nearer the time! I am sure you
will want to join us in wishing Holly every success in her
playing career.

lected feathers from birds and made wings with wax”.
Lola said “Icarus and Daedalus
flew into the sky using their
wings but Icarus flew too near
the sun which melted the wax
in his wings. Icarus fell into the
sea and drowned”. Luca went
on to say “Daedalus had to fly
on as he could not help to save
Icarus”. Both children told us
that they were nervous, but really enjoyed their Assembly. Well
done Class 5C!
Next week, we look forward to Class 2T’s Assembly.
Look out for parent letters on Monday.
Parents may have noticed that we have come away
from Fronter. We are working on its replacement—this
will be password protected and therefore only available to our school community. We are trialling uploading
class assemblies from today with Class 5C. Each week
the relevant class will receive their username and password with details of the website address and instructions. As an e-safety precaution, please remind your
child that usernames and passwords should be kept private. Please bear with us—we will get this information to
you as soon as we can. Thank you for your support.
Parking around the school: we had a call this week
from a very upset resident of Elibank Road who was distraught that if she hadn't have been going so slowly she
might have knocked down one of our children. She
could not see the road clearly whilst going round the
corner of Elibank Road due to parents parking their 4x4
on the corner of the road, making vision impossible.
PLEASE park safely, so that our children can move safely
in the vicinity of the school.
