Qin – The eternal emperor and his terracotta warriors
Delve into the history of China and the First Emperor‘s world –
the catalogue of the exhibition.
The terracotta army is one of the most famous archaeological discoveries of all
time and is monumental in every way. Each of the 8,000 warriors has individual
facial features. The fascinating figures are now on display in a sensational exhibition at the Bernisches Historisches Museum, after which they will travel back
home.
The exhibition and catalogue focus on the formation of
the Chinese Empire in 221 BC, the flamboyant figure of
First Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi, his monumental tomb
complex with the spectacular terracotta army and on the
legacy of the period for China.
With contributions by Maria Khayutina (ed.), Edward
Shaughnessy, Yuri Pines, Alain Thote, Charles Sanft,
Ch’en Chao-jung, Cao Wei, Armin Selbitschka, Catharina
Blänsdorf / Linda Zachmann, Michael Loewe, and Anna
Stecher.
Catalogue with more than 400 figures, maps, plans,
drawings and chronological tables as well as an
instruction on how to pronounce some of the Chinese
characters. The catalogue is available in German,
French and English.
Maria Khayutina (*1972) studied history with an
emphasis on ancient China at the State University of
Moscow and earned a doctorate from the Institute of
Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences in
1999. Since 2001 she has been a researcher and
lecturer at the Ruhr University of Bochum and the
Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and since
2011 she has been the curator of the exhibition „Qin The eternal emperor and his terracotta warriors“ at the
Bernisches Historisches Museum.
