Today, we will assist you in reviewing your degree requirements, getting your major declared,
getting registered for classes, and answer any questions you may have about your studies at
GVSU.
If you wish to have full-time standing, you will be required to take a minimum of 12 credits
(usually 4 classes) per semester. However, most students typically take 15 credits (usually 5
classes) each semester. If you have other commitments (work, family, etc.) that would require
you to be part-time please discuss this with your academic advisor during your meeting with
them for appropriate planning.
We will assist you in choosing the appropriate courses to fulfill your major requirements and
the general education requirements.

The enrollment in this course is restricted by class (Freshman,
Sophomore, etc.). You need to ask the Advising Center about a
permit
The class is full. You need to ask the Advising Center about a permit.
Co-requisite courses must be taken at the same time. You need to
register for both courses at the same time.
Certain lectures, labs, and/or discussions are "linked" together. You
must register for the lecture, lab and/or discussion at the same
time.
Only students in certain majors are allowed to register for this
course. You need to ask the Advising Center about a permit.
You are trying to take more hours than allowed. You must reduce
the number of hours on your schedule or get a permit.
The enrollment in the course is restricted. You need to ask the
Advising Center about a permit.
You do not have the pre-requisites for the course. To view prerequisite requirements click on the CRN number and View Catalog
Entry. You will need to ask the Advising Center about a permit.
You are trying to take 2 courses that meet at the same time or have
overlapping times.
Please read below for information on closed courses:
If the course you want to register for is closed, the class may be at maximum room capacity. You
may continue to watch for seats to open in the class as there is a lot of time between the advanced
registration period and the start of the semester. Another option is to request a closed course
permit from the department. However you should have a valid reason or circumstance for why you
need that course and section in that particular semester.
There is not one universal policy when requesting a closed class permit. Consult the department
offering the class to determine the best strategy for asking for a closed class permit.
For College of Community & Public Service departments, submit an override request form and
indicate "other" reason and explain what you are requesting and why. Again, a valid reason or
circumstance for why you need that course and section in that particular semester will be
required.
Please note: The CCPS Undergraduate Advising Center does not have the authority to grant closed
class permits.
