We hope that you all had a wonderful Spring Break that was fun and
relaxing for the entire family. With the longer, warmer days now here, we
can finally welcome the sunshine and spend more time outside. Since
their return to school, the children have been so excited to get out and
enjoy the fresh air on our wonderful playground.
We are now heading into our final term of the school year and it will be an
exciting time for the children with the many upcoming events in the next
few months. Both the staff and students are looking forward to our spring
production, ‘Célébrons le Canada – le 150e’ on April 18 & 19. We know
that the children and teachers are busy preparing for this concert and
can’t wait to see this fantastic musical performance celebrating Canada’s
150th birthday.
As well, we will hold our ‘Expo-sciences’ (Science Fair) in early May so
that students participating in this club will have the opportunity to present
and share their science research projects. We are proud that some of our
students will represent École St. Avila once again at the Manitoba
Science Symposium taking place from April 20-23.
On May 4, we will also hold another respect assembly where we will focus
on our next school-wide campaign around ‘Célébrons la diversité’ (Celebrate diversity) in connection with our work around Canada
150. During our assembly, students will have the opportunity to work together in their multi-grade family groups as they reflect upon how
Canadian diversity enriches us, not only as a nation, but as people.
Looking ahead to September, we are accepting registrations for
Kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year. If you have a child ready
for Kindergarten and have not yet registered, please call the office. We
will be hosting an ‘Orientation Day’ on the afternoon of May 19, during
which time the newest members of our community will visit the school for
a fun-filled afternoon of activities that will be organized in partnership with
the ‘Fort Garry Healthy Child Coalition’.

Robots in the Makerspace
During the month of April, our Makerspace will be all about robots. We will be bringing back the all
time favourite, the Sphero Sprk+ as well as introducing them to the Lego Mindstorm robots and
Ozobots.
Sphero Sprk+
The students loved the Sphero robots which are designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and invention through connected play and coding. Activities include programming them to move around the
student created maze or completing an obstacle course.
Lego Mindstorms
This robot combines the versatility of the Lego building system with the ability to create and command the robots to walk, talk, and do anything the students program. The students will program the
EV3 robots using the ipads and their coding skills.
Ozobots
An Ozobot is a tiny robot that reads colour code. These robots are a perfect way to introduce younger students to coding in a simple way. Ozobots have a sensor beneath them that reads colour
codes, or the different combinations of colours.
SPORTS SCOOP
Mme Malik K-3
Congratulations to all of the students who did their best during the March endurance run.
All students are showing great progress.
In April we will continue our unit on dance. Rope jumping skills, yoga, and Tai Chi will also be
taught during physical education classes. Balancing activities will be continued on a regular basis.
We will continue working on the fundamental movement skills as well as manipulative skills. This
will be done through a variety of games and activities during physical education classes. We will
begin our unit on tennis and other striking sports this month.
École St. Avila was successful in obtaining a Healthy School grant to promote yoga. We are
in the process of planning a week long lunch hour yoga celebration at the beginning of May. Assistance is needed with the set up and take down of the activities. Volunteers will also be needed
to prepare the healthy snacks for the participants. This event will take place during the beginning
of May. If you are interested in helping with the celebration contact Mme Malik by email.

School. They all played with enthusiasm and effort. Every time they touched the basketball they
gained more confidence. M. Wallack and the parents were all proud! Thank you to all the parents
and teachers who came out and supported our favorite athletes.

On adore lire….
At St-Avila, we adore reading especially… in French. On March 14, we kicked off our two week
campaign of “On adore lire… Ça marche bien à St-Avila.” To celebrate, we held an assembly as
well as a contest. Students enjoyed 15 minutes of uninterrupted reading for two weeks including
the chance of winning a book at each grade level.
We were also graced with the presence of a famous French Canadian actress. We had Josée
from the television show “Canot Cocasse.” Josée took some time from her busy schedule and read
to the Kindergarten to Grade 4 students in French. To learn more about “Canot Cocasse” or to
watch some shows, please check this link: http://unis.ca/canot-cocasse
You may also watch it on television on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 7:00 on Unis.tv (MTS
and Shaw).
On March 24th, students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 read to each other by doing a reading
activity called the human library. This activity gave everyone a chance to share their love reading
in French. On adore lire…
