Principal’s Message... from Mrs. Gonsalves
Dear Families of Kilauea School:
The Kilauea School faculty and staff are very excited about the wonderful
things we will accomplish together during the 2016-17 school year. One of
our first steps is welcoming you to our ELA (English Language Arts) Family
Night on Thursday, Sept. 29th at 5:45 PM. We hope you will take away
important information needed to support your child’s academic success.
Your ongoing support and parental engagement is essential for the success
of our students. (Please refer to the ELA flyer on page 3). Be sure to visit
our school website at KilaueaSchool.com for more information about our
school, school events, and online educational learning opportunities.
Please join me in giving a warm welcome to our 2016-17 PTSA (Parent
Teacher Student Association) Board. They are very enthusiastic and busy
planning for the current school year. We greatly appreciate this very
dedicated group of parent volunteers and hope you will join them to show
your support.
Kilauea School PTSA Executive Board Members:
President-Austin Ritchie
Vice President-Bethany Woodward
Secretary-Ele Jones
Treasurer-Sue Keller
Advisor-Sue Saldana
Kilauea School will be conducting our annual School Evacuation Drill on
Wednesday, October 5th at 8:30 AM. This year, we will be evacuating to
the Kilauea Neighborhood Center. Kilauea teachers and staff as well as the
Kauai Police Department will assist the students in this drill by providing
supervision and traffic control along the route. The route will be to exit
the school campus using the back entrance gate and walking along Momi
Street to the back field of the Neighborhood Center. Please remember to
provide your child with the following items on the morning of the school
evacuation drill: Hat or visor, walking shoes, a bottle of drinking water,
sunscreen, and umbrella, if needed. In the event of weather concerns or
heavy rain, this evacuation will be postponed.
PTC (Parent/Teacher Conferences) notices will be sent home on Sept.
29th. PTC will take place from Oct. 24-31 and school will be dismissed
those days at 1:15 PM. Please make arrangements for your children after
school during this time of early release.
Thank you for your cooperation and patience with the closing off of a

portion of our front lawn. With the renovation of our basketball court and fire
lane in front of E Building, we have relocated our upper grade playground to
the front lawn. It is anticipated that this work will be completed by the end of
fall break. Parents may continue to park outside the coned area near the
school sign in the designated parking area provided.
Please be sure your child/ren are dropped off and picked up in the designated area in front of the
school. Drop off and pick up near the back gate is not allowed since it creates a safety concern for
those students and adults walking and biking to school. When dropping off/picking up your child in
the front, please be sure to respect the crosswalks and JPOs (Junior Police Officers). Please do not
park on the crosswalk. You should always keep your car in drive-never putting your car in park,
exiting your car, or reversing. If you are waiting for your child and do not see them, please continue
to circle in the drive or feel free to park in the designated parking area. Thank you for respecting
others and only parking in the designated parking area since parking in the front drive creates
congestion and holds up the traffic flow. Your cooperation and understanding throughout this
phase of construction is greatly appreciated.
Many students ride bikes to school and park them either in the front or near the back of the
campus. Since a bicycle was recently reported missing, you may want to consider having your child
put a lock on his or her bike when parked on campus.
All visitors and volunteers on campus during the school day must sign in at the main office and get
a visitor’s pass. Any visits to the classroom should be arranged with the teacher in advance. We
ask that all parents and volunteers limit distractions and interruptions to the classroom/learning
environment. All students must be signed out in the front office when leaving the school campus.
Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
Kilauea School students are expected to dress in an appropriate manner, which nurtures the values
of education and respect. Clothing worn at school should be clean, neat and in good taste. "Short"
shorts, off-the-shoulder blouses, spaghetti strap blouses (less than one inch wide), and midriff or
belly button-exposing clothing is not appropriate. Clothing should cover undergarments. For
students' safety, excessive and large jewelry is not to be worn and appropriate shoes or slippers
should be worn. Shoes should be practical for playground wear. Soles/heels of slippers should be
no more than 1 inch thick. Platform shoes are not appropriate for recess and P.E. Clothing
advertising tobacco products, alcohol, banned or harmful substances or which display inappropriate
messages (i.e., profanity, violence, etc.) is not allowed. Violations of the student dress code will be
handled as a disciplinary infraction.
In an effort to promote healthy lifestyles, we are highly encouraging healthy
snacks at school. We ask that students not share snacks/food with others due to
many health related illnesses related to food allergies, ingredients, food
temperatures, sanitation, etc. We also discourage food being brought to school
and shared with others due to health related risk. The main ingredient should not
be sugar or contain peanuts/nuts due to health and safety concerns. Please be sure
to get the teacher’s approval prior to bringing any food/snack items to school to
share with the class. We ask that you consider items other than food to share with
the class such as pencils or erasers when appropriate.
Sincerely,
Sherry Gonsalves, Principal

GET READY FOR THE LION KING!
Kilauea School Performing Arts Program, AKA Drama Club, led by Mrs. Farrah
Krovoza, will begin Tuesday, September 20th from 2:15-3:15pm. Our show this
year will be The Lion King-Kids Edition! We’re looking for thirty 4th-6th graders
willing to make a commitment through the March 9-11th performances. 2nd &
3rd graders will be allowed for ensemble roles. We’ll also need parents to help.
If you and/or your child are interested, please fill out and return the yellow
flyer that went home this week.
October is National Bullying Prevention Month
Every October, schools and organizations across the country join STOMP Out Bullying™ in observing
National Bullying Prevention Month. The goal is to encourage communities to work together to stop
bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all
children of all ages. Monday, October 3rd is Blue Shirt Day® World Day of Bullying Prevention™ On
Kauai, we are asking students, staff and whomever wants to participate to wear a purple shirt in support
because it’s a neutral color for our high schools. Wear one and show your support that day!
Mrs. Krovoza’s & Mr. Schwemmer’s 5th grade classes are currently studying
early America, including the age of Exploration, Native American perspectives, and the Colonial
Period. On September 23rd, they’ll be going to the First Nations Powwow in Kapa`a. To culminate
this unit of study, students will be creating a presentation of learning called “Voices From Early
America”. Students will be sharing from the point of view of these early explorers/settlers in the
new world~ what motivated them to persevere despite hardships and difficulties. We invite all
students and their families to join us on Tuesday, October 4th @ 5:30pm in the cafeteria.
Kilauea School Robotics Team is beginning their research for the ANIMAL ALLIES 2016
TEAM PROJECT. On Thursday, September 15th, the team is touring the Kilauea National
Wildlife Refuge with Ranger Jennifer Waipa to investigate problems with native species.
They hope to find solutions for the problems they identify there. This project is one of 3
parts of their Lego Robotics competition that they will take part in November 2016.
NEED A JOB?
Our school is in need of Adult supervisors, substitute custodians, substitute
Cafeteria helpers, and substitute office clerks. Anyone interested in one of these positions can pick up an application in the front office.
MAHALO for your patience and understanding this year with short notice on changes to the menu. Our
cafeteria in now supplying food to Hanalei School as well as our own and has
some new suppliers that have not adequately been filling the orders that we
submit. We will be more diligent at working together to inform you of changes.
