The Quiet Life
Happy the man whose wish and care
A few paternal acres bound.
Content to breathe his native, air
In his own ground.
Whose herds with milk, whose fields with bread,
Whose flocks supply him with attire;
Whose trees in summer yield him shade,
In winter fire.
Blest who can unconcernedly find
Hours, days and years slide soft away
In health of body, peace of mind,
Quiet by day.
Sound sleep by night; steady and ease
Together mixt, sweet recreation
And innocence which most does please
With meditation.
Thus let me live; unseen, unknown
Thus unlamented let me die,
Steal from the world, and not a stone
Tell where I lie.

The Galapagos Islands are in the Pacific Ocean, off the western coast of
South America. They are a rocky, lonely spot, but they are also one of the most
unusual places in the world. One reason is that they are the home of some of
the last giant tortoises left on earth.
Weighing hundreds of pounds, these tortoises, or land turtles, wander
slowly around the rocks and sand of the islands. Strangely each of these
islands has its own particular kind of tortoise. There are seven different kinds
of tortoises on the eight islands, each kind being slightly different from the
other.
Hundreds of years ago, thousands of tortoises wandered around these
islands. However, all this changed when people started landing there. When
people first arrived in 1535, their ships had no refrigerators. This meant that
fresh food was always a problem for the sailors on board. The giant tortoises
provided the solution to this problem.
Ships would anchor off the islands, and crew would row ashore and
seize as many tortoises as they could. Once the animals were abroad the ship,
the sailors would roll the tortoises onto their backs. The tortoises were
completely helpless once on their backs, so they could only lie there until used
for soups and stews. Almost 100,000 tortoises were carried off in this way.

Sleep
Nobody knows why we sleep, but we all need to. There are no rules about
how much sleep is necessary but an average adult sleeps for about seven
hours and twenty minutes. About eight percent of adults are happy with five
hours or less of sleep and four percent want ten hours or more of it. Babies
need between fourteen to eighteen hours whereas the elderly people need less
than they did when young but often take a nap during the day.
Every one at sometime has difficulty in sleeping but if you miss a couple of
hours of sleep, no harm is done. You may feel tired and irritable the next day
but the body soon makes up for the loss. However, if you try to stay awake
night after night, you soon begin to behave strangely. You lose the ability to
concentrate and your judgement is impaired. You begin to imagine strange
things and your behaviour becomes deranged.
A lot of people have serious problems. Some people find that they cannot get
to sleep. Some wake up in the middle of the night or too early in the morning.
There are a number of causes. Worry and depression are the most common.
All kinds of things in the environment can affect sleep – noise, light, heat,
cold, new surroundings etc. Pain during an illness can also keep people
awake. Most of us accept temporary sleeplessness without seeking help but
one and a half million people in Britain take drugs to help them sleep. Many
people become addicted to their sleeping pills but sleeping pills do not deal
with the cause of insomnia and it is better to avoid them if you can. It is much
better to identify the problem and remove it.

One cannot be truly human and civilized unless one looks upon not only
fellow-men but all creation with the eyes of a friend. Throughout India, edicts
carved on rocks and iron pillars are reminders that 22 centuries ago Emperor
Ashoka defined the king’s duty as not merely to protect citizens and punish
wrong-doers but also to protect animal life and forest trees. Ashoka was the
first and perhaps the only monarch until very recently to forbid the killing of a
large number of species of animals for sport or food. He went further,
regretting the carnage of his military conquests and enjoining upon his
successors to find “their only pleasure in the peace that comes through
righteousness.”
Along with the rest of mankind, we in India – in spite of Ashoka – have been
guilty of wanton disregard for the sources of our sustenance, we share your
concern at the rapid deterioration of flora and fauna. Some of our own wild
life has been wiped out, miles of forests with beautiful old trees, mute
witnesses of history, have been destroyed.
