Dear Parents / Carers
Welcome back to the new term and a Happy New Year to you all!
Uniform
We are pleased to see that the majority of children are now coming to school in the correct uniform. Thank you
for supporting us in this. There are however some children who are not in uniform. Please can I remind you that
jeggings, jean type trousers and leggings are not allowed in school. Long boots may be worn to school, particularly in
wet and cold weather but children should bring an alternative pair of shoes to wear in school. They will be allowed
to put their boots on again to go outside at playtimes. A reminder also that only small hair bows are allowed and
that head bands should be plain. Earrings should be a small stud only and must be removed for PE. Children will be
spoken to about incorrect uniform and parents will be contacted if the situation does not improve. If you have any
concerns about the uniform policy, please make an appointment to come and discuss it.
Parking / Atherton Way
Although the road outside school appears much clearer now the yellow lines are in place, I understand that the
issues have now been moved further up Atherton Way. I understand from the council that they were unable to put
the yellow lines down as planned due to vehicles being parked in the way. I hope that once these have been put in
place, the situation will be improved. Thank you for your patience.
Reading at Home
We encourage our children to read at home at least 3 times per week. Currently only 80% of our children read this
many times at home. We are still awarding a Dojo for reading 3 times a week and want to encourage as many
children as possible to achieve this. The children do not necessarily need to read their school reading book. Any
kind of reading counts, even a newspaper report or a magazine. As the children get older they may want to read to
themselves. This is also fine and a skill they need to develop. All we ask is that you sign their reading diaries each
time so that the teachers can reward them.
Parental Engagement
We are delighted that so many more parents are now joining us in school. We have lots of opportunities available
from coming to our pre school Imagination Library, Theme afternoons, the Head Teachers awards, becoming one of
our Parent Army helping in school and coming to join our Parents Panel. We firmly believe that children achieve
best when their parents are involved in their education. There are lots of ways to be more involved. If you would
like further details, please come and talk to us.
We are looking at providing additional social events for our children but need the support and help of parents in
order to do so. If you are interested in becoming part of a group of parents who help the school organise events
such as discos, film nights etc please can you contact either Mrs Winter, (Y1) or the school office. Thank you.
Start of the day
Many more of our children are arriving promptly for the start of the school day. Thank you for your support with
this. Learning begins at 8.45, with registers being taken at 8.55. We are monitoring the arrival of our children in
the mornings. If you are having difficulties getting your child to school on time, please make an appointment to
have a chat with our Lead Learning Mentor Mrs Riggall. It is imperative that you sign your child in electronically as
this produces a Fire Register and maintains our safeguarding procedure. There have been a few instances where
the office has been alerted to a pupil absence as registration has been missed and the signing in procedure has not
been completed.
Staffing
I am delighted to tell you that Mrs Nunes and her husband are expecting their first baby at the beginning of April.
We will be recruiting a teacher in the next couple of weeks to cover her maternity leave.
We would like to extend a warm welcome to our teacher training students – Miss Taylor in Y1, Miss Dunkerley in
Y2, and Mr Turnbull in Y5.
Cold weather / path
With the cold snap now upon us, I would like to remind you all that should school be closed due to snow, it will be
announced on all the local radio stations. We will also send a text out to all parents.
The path between our school and St Mary’s Academy is now the responsibility of the council. Unfortunately this
means that it will no longer be gritted in icy conditions. Please take care when walking this route.
Curriculum days
We have two curriculum afternoons this term. The first is based around our termly themes and is an opportunity
for you to come and see the exciting things your children are learning this term. Mellors catering will also be
present (from 3pm) with samples of food for you to taste. The second is based on Reading. We will be providing
you with an opportunity to come and share some reading activities with your children. We are also hoping that the
Library will be available for you to come and visit.
