Helen B. Powless
Helen Beverly Jacobs Powless, 66, of the Onondaga Nation died Saturday
at University Hospital. Bom on the Onondaga Nation, she was a member of
the Eel Clan. She graduated from the Onondaga Nation School and Haskell
Indian School, Lawrence, Kan. She worked for the Onondaga Nation and
previously was a secretary for the New York State Health Department and
a secretary and culture teacher at the Onondaga Nation School. She was a
member of the Onondaga Nation Volunteer Fire Department Ladies
Auxiliary. Survivors: Her husband, Chief Irving Jr.; a daughter, Nancy J.
Powless of Onondaga Nation; three sons, Barry A. of Cattaraugus, Bradley
G. of Onondaga Nation and Neal J. of Syracuse; two sisters, Gertrude
Lyons of Syracuse and Deanna Homer of LeRoy; a brother, Elmer Jacobs
of Syracuse; and seven grandchildren. Services were held Monday at the
family's home and in the Onondaga Nation Longhouse. Burial in the
Onondaga Nation Cemetery.

She was a mother. She gave her children the guidance to become successful adults, carrying on the work she started.
She was a teacher, a leader in turning around the education system to
include our culture and way of life.
She was devoted to tending to the endless affairs of our Nation.
She welcomed us to her home, helping us in any way she could.
We miss her today,
We'll miss her tomorrow.

Albany, NY: St. Regis Tribe has plans to concentrate on a gambling hall
in Monticello and puts casino on hold in Greene County.
London, England: British scientists predict researchers may be able to
replace damaged cells in ears of deaf people, working with cochlear
implants. Success so far in mice. 2.9 M Canadians experience some
form of hearing loss.
Toronto, ON: RCMP arrested 9 people in Sarnia Ontario for their
involvement in a smuggling ring. Reports state a 10 year span of smuggling by aboriginals living on a reserve near Sarnia bring people across
the St. Clair River into the U.S.
Albany, NY: Newsday newspaper article on March 25 nvesigates 'Toxic
Threats fo Tribal Lands". Interviews people from Akwesasne on the PCB
contamination and its change in lifestyles.

Eagles II' for their performance in winning the 2001 Ontario Bantam
Girls' Provincial Tier 4 Championship. This success rewards the dedication and hard work of the entire team and coaching staff. You must

counts.
In the activities that led up
to the Monday morning arrests,
Customs agents say two of the
men met up, by pre-arrangement,
in Massena, where they rented a
U-Haul van. They then drove it to
Potsdam where they joined the
Canadian. From there, allege
investigators, they drove the UHauITwith its expensive cargo, to
Hogansburg and then to the
Canadian side of the Territory
where they were spotted by the
Akwesasne police.

Phoenix, AZ: Ex BIA employee sentenced in school thefts, depositing
left over funds in a bank account and withdraw the monies for personal
use. Dianna Smith pleaded guilty to conspiracy and Doreen Begay
pleaded guilty to theft receiving 18 months in prison and 120 days home
confinement with 5 years supervised release, respectively.
Toronto, ON: A Canadian study is researching a link to cow's milk consumption and possibility of running a higher risk for diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Dr. Dosch from the Hospital for Sick Kids and St.
Michael's Hospital said there may be a connection to children given milk
formula before they are three months old and who may be genetically
susceptible to juvenile diabetes.
Syracuse NY: Banished Onondaga, Oliver Hill, Jr. is being sued by
NYS for the cleanup to his gas station spill on the Onondaga Nation
Territory. The cleanup cost New York State $1.7 Million and is seeking
reimbusement from Hill. Mr. Hill has not commented.
Washington DC: Native Americans have a high rate of being victims in
violent crime as compared to major U.S. Ethnic groups including whites.
Wisconsin: The Oneida Nation at Wisconsin paid the $4.85 M annual
payment on its gaming compact to the State of Wisconsin after the
Governor threatened cancellation of the compact.
Ephedrine may also be used.

Meth labs tend to stink.
Said Amentas, "There's
always a possibility, given the
vast open spaces here (in the
North Country and Southern
Quebec), that certainly there
would be areas conducive to the
establishment of mobile labs.
That's why rural areas are popular
sites for production because of
the strong odor associated with
the manufacturing .process,"
Hydrogen chloride gas is
another extremely volatile substance and is also used in the
Meth-manufacturing process. It,
too, gives off a terrible whiff.
Agent Amentas said the
seized Pseudoephedrine would
have translated into several hundred pounds of Meth. At about
$890 to $950 per half ounce, the
drug is extremely expensive coming in at upwards of $1,900 an
ounce.
Washington, DC: A report from the Surgen General indicates that
American Indians and Alaskan Native women are heavier smokers than
their White and Black counterparts. In 1997-98, 34.5% Native Am.
women smoked compared to 23.5% and 21.9% by whites and blacks,
respectively.
