A Little Bit about Mesopotamia, Ohio
Mesopotamia, along with Middlefield in adjacent Geauga County, boasts the second
largest Amish settlement in Ohio and the fourth largest in the country. The center of town,
better known as the “Commons” is surrounded by 28 buildings, 21 of them built before the
Civil War. This section is included on the National Register of Historic Places as the
Mesopotamia Village Historic District.
Notable sites along or near the Commons includes: the End of the Commons General
Store; the World’s Largest Horse & Buggy; the Mesopotamia Town Hall; Fairview
Cemetery which features unique stone markers carved by Mesopotamia native Howard
Bridgen; Mesopotamia Historical Museum & Meeting House; and the Mesopotamia
United Methodist Church.
#1 Tractor-Drawn Hayride / Mespo Elementary School
4466 Kinsman Road (SR 87), Mesopotamia • 440.693.4125
Take a leisurely, tractor-drawn hayride along some of Mesopotamia’s scenic, country road roads. The first of two stops on
the hayride is Miller’s Furniture. Because parking is extremely limited at Miller’s, it is recommended that visitors park their
vehicles at the school and take the hayride to the furniture shop. The wagons will depart the school parking lot every 20
minutes stopping first at Miller’s and then continuing onto the Mesopotamia Historical Museum & Meeting House before
returning to the school.
#2 Ridgeview Farm & Country Market
5488 Kinsman Road (SR 87, Mesopotamia • RidgeviewFarm.com
Ridgeview Farm, is a family-owned and operated 101-acre farm which was purchased
in 1926 and has been in the Grover family for four generations. The fifth generation
of Grovers is now growing up on the land. Steve and Sharon Grover, along with their
five children, handle the daily operation of this working farm.
Although admission to the farm is free, there is a charge for taking the hayride through
the woods or exploring the six-acre corn maze. Cost per person for the hayride is $5;
cost for the corn maze is $5. However, should you choose to do both activities, the
per person cost is $9. Be sure to also visit the Country Market located on the farm
which is full of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables as well as a variety of jellies, jams
and other canned goodies.
Then come back in October when the farm holds its annual “Fall Fun Weekends”
every Saturday and Sunday. “Capture the fall before it leaves” and not only take a
20-minute hayride through the woods and explore the corn maze, but pick your own
pumpkin. Get up close and personal with barn yard friends at the Petting Barn.
Watch pig races at 2 and 4 p.m. And take home some fresh Amish baked goods, fresh apple cider and seasonal produce. Check
the website for complete details. And although, there is never an admission fee to visit the farm, there is a nominal charge for
the hayride, corn maze and guided tour.

#4 Mesopotamia United Methodist Church
8802 State Route 534, Mesopotamia • 440.693.4456
The congregation of this church has been worshiping here for over 200 years. However, during
the Civil War, there was a disagreement among the congregation and the church was split as was
the case with the entire Methodist Episcopal Church. As a result, there was a Methodist Episcopal
North and a Methodist Episcopal South. Although the two disagreed, they continued to meet in
this building but at different times with different preachers.
Today, one congregation meets here. And although not everyone agrees with everything, one
thing that everyone is in agreement with is the mission of the church which is: “To proclaim
Christ to all who will hear.” All are invited to worship with the congregation any Sunday.
Located within easy walking distance of the church is Fairview Cemetery, which features unique
stone markers carved by Mesopotamia native Howard Bridgen.
Be sure to stop by the church from 8 to 10 a.m. when breakfast will be available for purchase.
#5 Mesopotamia Historical Museum & Meeting House
8788 State Route 534, Mesopotamia • 440.693.4261
This museum, which is home to the Mesopotamia Memorial & Historical Association, is filled with items used in a kitchen,
parlor, bedroom and other rooms during the 1800s and early 1900s. There is also an Amish section containing items used in
Amish homes.
Outside of the building sits a stone hog trough built by a local stone mason in the late 1800s to express political sentiments
against John D. Rockefeller, Mark A. Hanna and John Pierpoint Morgan. Its inscription reads: “The Devil’s Own Hogs.”
Lunch will be available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. And an Amish Wedding Feast dinner will be served from
2 to 5 p.m.; cost for the dinner is $12 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 & under.
