ANIMAL INSIDE OUT
THE BODY WORLDS: ANIMAL INSIDE OUT INTRODUCTION
TOUCHES ON THE TOPICS OF DIVERSITY AND COMPARATIVE
ANATOMY. IT IS A SUITABLE INTRODUCTION FOR SECONDARY
STUDENTS, PRIOR TO THEIR VISIT TO BODY WORLDS:
ANIMAL INSIDE OUT.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING THE INTRODUCTION?
DURATION:
20 minutes
GRADE:
8–12
200 students maximum
KEYWORDS:
Animal
Biology
Adaptations
Structure
Comparative anatomy
CURRICULUM LINKS
BY GRADE:
Science 8: Life Science
(Cells and Systems)
Science 10: Life Science
(Sustainability of Ecosystems)
Biology 11: Animal Biology,
Taxonomy, Evolution
Biology 12: Human Biology
The program opens with an exploration into the similarities and differences between animals.
Examples of structural, behavioural and physiological adaptations are discussed. Volunteers
from the audience will play a game where they try to capture as much “food” as possible,
using different adapted limbs. Throughout the Introduction, students will have opportunities
to check their own understanding of anatomy and adaptation.
CLASSROOM ACTIVITY: ORGAN SYSTEMS JIGSAW
Get your students thinking about internal anatomy and the similarities and differences
between humans and other animals.
WHAT YOU NEED:
» Printed and/or online resources for research
» Organ Systems Summary Sheet (5 copies per student)
WHAT TO DO:
BEFORE YOUR VISIT:
Divide students into 5 “Expert Groups”:
Respiratory, Circulatory, Excretory, Digestive and Reproductive.
1. Using the resources available to you, research the role of your organ system in humans by
filling in questions 1–2 on the summary sheet.
DURING YOUR VISIT:
2. While exploring BODY WORLDS: ANIMAL INSIDE OUT, find examples of your assigned
organ system. Compare and contrast the human organ system with the animals you find
(fill out question 3 on the summary sheet).
AFTER YOUR VISIT:
Break the Expert Groups into “Sharing Groups,” where each group has at least one member
representing each organ system.
3. Take turns explaining what you have learned about your assigned organ system and describe
any unique organs or features in other animals. Other students are responsible for taking notes
for each organ system on fresh summary sheets.

What is the overall purpose of this organ system in humans?
1. In the space provided below, list the major organs and tissues of this system. Provide a brief
(one sentence) description of the function of each.
2. Write down 5 interesting facts about your organ system.
3. Complete this section during your visit to Body Worlds: ANIMAL INSIDE OUT. As you explore
the exhibition, find animals that show examples of your assigned organ system. Compare and
contrast the human organ system with the animals you find.
