Subject: Stage 2 Biology
– Full Year

The course content of Stage 2 Biology is based on 4 Themes:
Macromolecules
This theme covers the structure and function of organic macromolecules found in living things.
Cells
This theme covers the structure and function of cells in both unicellular and multicellular organisms.
Organisms
This theme covers the structure and function of organisms. The human body is used as the main example, however, the
study of an additional range of organisms is used to reinforce the concepts covered in this theme.
Ecosystems
This theme covers interactions between members of the same species, different species, and the non-living environment,
with a strong emphasis on the evolutionary perspective.
Assessment
The assessment of Stage 2 Biology exists into two parts:
1. School Assessment (70% of the student’s final grade)
Students complete four tests (‘Skills and Applications Tasks’), three practical reports and one issues
investigation (‘Investigations Folio’). These are written and marked by the subject teacher before being
submitted for moderation at the end of the year.
2. and External Assessment (30% of the student’s final grade)
Students sit a 3-hour exam at the end of the year which accounts for 30% of their overall grade for the
subject.
