Family Fun
Adventure Game!
How to play The Family Fun Adventure Game:
Welcome to Georgia’s Blue Ridge! We’ve designed a fun
adventure for you families. Kids can fill out this game
booklet, answering questions about really fun places we’ll
guide you to visit while you are here.
Parents... get ready to take the kids to each spot. Kids... just
go to each page and answer the questions about what’s on
that page. Your parents can help you, and they’ll be taking
you to cool places where you can see the mountains, rivers,
wildlife and fun that’s all around our area.
Ready to begin?
Just turn to the next page and answer the question.
After you have filled out all the pages in the Family Fun
Adventure Game, and gone to all these places to explore
Georgia’s Blue Ridge, just bring the booklet back to the
Welcome Center. One of our staff members will check your
answers, and you can claim your special prize (one per
family, please). We hope you had fun on your adventure,
and we hope you’ll be coming back to see us soon in
Georgia’s Blue Ridge!

MERCIER ORCHARDS - WORKING FARM, FUN PLACE TO VISIT (#1 on map)
Mercier Orchards is a working apple and fruit orchard. You can see how
farming is done today in the apple and fruit orchards that surround the
main building. Go inside and you’ll see many ways fruits are used in delicious pies, pastries, jams and more. Farming here in Georgia’s Blue Ridge
was once the way people grew and raised all their food, in the days
before supermarkets! All around our area you can see farms and fields,
some of them still in use as working farms.
Name three kinds of apples
grown at Mercier Orchards:

STAND ON TWO STATES AT ONCE (#2 on map)
The Georgia/Tennessee Line is right in McCaysville/Copperhill. You can
stand on the line and actually be in two states at one time! The old iron
bridge here is very historic, and was once the only way to get across the
river for miles around. On one side of the bridge, the river is called the
Toccoa River, and on the other it is called the Ocoee River. The river flows
north into the Tennessee River, which flows into the Mississippi River,
which flows all the way to the ocean!

HORSESHOE BEND PARK - RIVER ENVIRONMENT,
FUN PLACE TO VISIT (#3 on map)
Horseshoe Bend Park is right on the Toccoa River and it’s a
fun place to take a picnic and sit by the river, wade or even
play horseshoes! The park is named for a big curve in the
Toccoa River. See it on the main map in the front of this
booklet? It looks like a horseshoe. A large number of fish and
aquatic plants live in the Toccoa River. What kind of fish do
you think swim here?

SANDY BOTTOMS - FOREST & RIVER ENVIRONMENT (#5 on map)
Sandy Bottoms is an area of the wild Toccoa River as it flows right through
the Chattahoochee National Forest. Here the river is more shallow, and
the woods on both sides are in their natural state. The Toccoa River starts
not too far from here in little streams formed by rainfall in the mountains.
The water flows down the river, past Sandy Bottoms, then keeps going to
fill up Lake Blue Ridge just upstream of here.

See how the little raindrops
make big lakes and rivers ?
It’s all part of a watershed which means part of a cycle of water from rainfall to little streams, to big rivers that flow to the sea. Our water comes
from these watersheds and we must be very careful to protect them from
pollution and over development. If you were a raindrop, how long do you
think it would take you to flow from the mountains, or headwaters, of the
Toccoa River all the way to Lake Blue Ridge?

BLUE RIDGE DAM - MANMADE WONDER, FUN PLACE TO VISIT (#6 on map)
Lake Blue RIdge Dam is one of the largest earthen dams in the world.
You can drive right over top of it! Stop at an interesting little pulloff area
on the left hand side of the road before you cross the dam to see a story
about it and why it was created by the Tennessee Valley Authority. When
you drive over the dam you will see Lake Blue RIdge on one side, and the
Toccoa River below it.
What does water going through the dam make?
