Here the river is more shallow, and the woods on both sides are in their natural state. The Toccoa River starts not too far from here in little streams formed by rainfall in the mountains. The water flows down the river, past Sandy Bottoms, then keeps going to fill up Lake Blue Ridge just upstream of here. What’s a Watershed ? DAM RAINFALL Sandy Bottoms TOCCOA RIVER TOCCOA RIVER LAKE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN STREAMS See how the little raindrops make big lakes and rivers ? It’s all part of a watershed which means part of a cycle of water from rainfall to little streams, to big rivers that flow to the sea. Our water comes from these watersheds and we must be very careful to protect them from pollution and over development. If you were a raindrop, how long do you think it would take you to flow from the mountains, or headwaters, of the Toccoa River all the way to Lake Blue Ridge? _________________________________________________________ (don’t worry, there is no single right answer) page 10 Why Do We Build a Dam ?
