Night Flyers
Bats are mammals. A mammal is an animal with hair whose
babies are born alive. Bats are the only mammals that can fly.
They have wings, but they do not have any feathers. Their
wings are made of skin. Bats sleep in the day and stay awake at
night. Some bats use their ears to "see" their food. First they
make sounds. The sounds travel through the air and hit the food
near the bat. The sounds bounce back to the bat. Then the bat
knows where the food is.
There are many kinds of bats. There are many sizes of bats
too. The bumblebee bat weighs less than a penny. The biggest
bats have wings that stretch six feet wide.
