Australia prior to her arrival in London in 2006, including
the completion of her Australian Choral Conductors
Education and Training choral conducting qualification in
2000 under the tutelage of Graham Abbott and Faye Dumont and studies at the University of
Melbourne in 2001 with Professor John Hopkins. In 2008-9, Lindsay was invited to participate

RICHARD STRAUSS – OPENING FANFARE FROM “ALSO SPRACH
ZARATHUSTRA”
Strauss composed this tone poem in 1896, inspired by the philosophical work of the same name by
Friedrich Nietzsche. The opening theme is sub-titled “Sunrise” and the dawn is represented by the
famous three note rising motif, introduced by the trumpets, which permeates the rest of the work. The
entire work lasts about half an hour, but tonight we will only perform the opening section, made
famous by it’s inclusion in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
PAUL DUKAS – THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE
This work is Dukas’s musical interpretation of Goethe’s 1797 poem Die Zauberlehrling, in which an
old sorcerer leaves his apprentice alone in charge of his workshop with chores to complete. The
apprentice decides to enchant a broom to do the work of fetching water for him, but he is using magic
that he is not fully in control of and he soon realises that he is unable to stop the broom as the
workshop starts to flood. In desperation, the apprentice takes an axe to the broom, splitting it in two,
but each half becomes a new broom which works at twice the speed! The brooms multiply until at last
the sorcerer returns, and he is able to halt the spell. The sorcerer reminds the apprentice that powerful
spells such as these should only be conjured by the master himself.
The story was famously animated to Dukas’s music by Walt Disney in his 1940 film Fantasia, in
which Mickey Mouse played the role of the apprentice. Disney made one change to the story –
portraying the sorcerer as angry (or at least pretending to be angry) with the apprentice for his actions.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice has been made into a fantasy adventure film, a modern re-telling of the
story starring Nicolas Cage and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The film will also be distributed by
Walt Disney Pictures, though it will not feature the famous music, and is due for release later this
month.
JULIAN JACOBSON – TO THE LIGHTHOUSE
In 1983 the BBC adapted Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse for TV. Starring Michael Gough
and Rosemary Harris, and featuring a young Kenneth Branagh, the series focuses on the Ramsay
family – father, mother, their eight children and their four guests – on vacation in Cornwall. The music
played tonight featured over the closing credits of the series and was written by the composer and
pianist Julian Jacobson, who has adapted the parts for our use and kindly given us permission to
perform it this evening.
EDVARD GRIEG – PEER GYNT SUITE NO. 1
Morning Mood
The Death of Åse
Anitra’s Dance
In the Hall of the Mountain King
Grieg wrote the incidental music to the play of the same name (by the Norwegian playwright Henrik
Ibsen) in 1875, and later extracted eight movements to form the two orchestral suites which are so
familiar today. Much of this music has been used as incidental music in films, most notably 1957’s The
4
Pied Piper of Hamelin, a made-for-TV movie which featured all four of the movements from the first
suite, plus the Arabian Dance and Solveig’s Song from the second suite. In the Hall of the Mountain
King was also used in the 1931 classic suspense thriller M, being whistled constantly by the child
murderer, and more recently was used in the opening sequence for the film Dead Snow (2009).
ENNIO MORRICONE – GABRIEL’S OBOE
Morricone’s soundtrack to The Mission (1986) combined liturgical chorales, Spanish-influenced
drumming and native drumming from South America, received both a Golden Globe for Best Original
Score and a BAFTA, and was also nominated for an Oscar. This sublime theme, one of the most
famous parts of his score, represents the humanity, spirituality and emotion of the story and is
performed tonight by our principal oboe Isobel Williams.
HOWARD SHORE – LORD OF THE RINGS
Peter Jackson’s adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings trilogy are perhaps the most famous
films made in the last decade. Among the 17 Academy Awards that the three films received between
them were two for Howard Shore’s original scores. John Whitney’s arrangement of his music takes us
through several of his themes in the following order: The Fellowship Theme, The Prophecy,
Concerning Hobbits, Three Is Company, In Dreams, Shortcut to Mushrooms, A Knife in the Dark,
Argonath, The Breaking of the Fellowship, In Dreams (reprise).
The Children of John Stainer Primary School, Year 6, are:

Bamigbaye, Callum Berg, Samuel Blake, Tamiah Bollers,

Harmony Sinfonia secured funding from the Mayor's Fund of Lewisham, in the ward of Brockley, to provide outreach
workshops to primary school children. We selected John Stainer Community School and a class of Grade 6's to share with
them our love of orchestral instruments and film music. The children have been very enthusiastic about seeing and hearing
instruments up close, and Arturo's double bass was a particular favourite! In workshops the children and musicians
collaborated to work on their own piece of film music using percussive and melodic instruments as well as our orchestral
instruments. The children have been very active - we've played Film Bingo, identifying famous movie themes, comparing
and contrasting themes of characters in movies, and creating their own music. The workshops concluded on 24th June with
performances from all the Grade 6's to other children in the school. The fun doesn't stop there though, as the children have
also been working on their beautiful singing voices to join us tonight in our concert performance of Lord of the Rings.

JOHN WILLIAMS – THE FLIGHT TO NEVERLAND
Starring Robin Williams, Julia Roberts and Dustin Hoffman, and directed by Steven Spielberg, the
1991 film Hook is a fantasy sequel to Peter Pan. Now grown up and with his childhood an extremely
distant memory, Peter must return to Neverland and recapture his youth in order to defeat Captain
Hook who has kidnapped his two children.
Composer John Williams had originally been working on a stage musical version of Hook in
collaboration with the vocalist Leslie Bricusse, however the project was cancelled in 1985 after the duo
had already written 10 songs. A few years later the project was picked up again by TriStar as a film,
and Williams adapted the existing music for the film soundtrack, which may explain why many of the
thematic ideas in the score are so lyrical in nature. The soundtrack to Hook is regarded as Williams at
his best, being one of the most thematically diverse soundtracks to be scored in the 1990s.

Main Title
Princess Leia’s Theme
The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme)
Yoda’s Theme
Throne Room & End Title
George Lucas’s Star Wars franchise has become a worldwide phenomenon, and is the third highest
grossing film series, behind the James Bond and Harry Potter films. John Williams’s music for the
films has become equally famous for its portrayal of outer space and the planets on which the action is
set, as well as for its easily recognisable themes.
Main Title - The main Star Wars theme which opens each of the films. This movement also features
short bursts of the Rebel Fanfare in the brass, which later reappears in a truncated form in the
woodwinds.
Princess Leia’s Theme - A lush, romanticized theme that represents the naïve and vulnerable sides of
Leia, this theme features most prominently in episode III just after Leia is born.
The Imperial March – The relentless rhythm and dark harmony of this march have allowed it to
achieve iconic status as an evil theme, representing the Galactic Empire and specifically Darth Vader.
Yoda’s Theme – This gentle theme represents the Jedi master Yoda and reflects his teachings and
abilities.
Throne Room & End Title – Also known as the “Old Republic Theme” or “May the Force be with
you”, the Throne Room theme represents Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Jedi and the Force. This leads us into
the End Title music, which is a reprise of the Main Title.

Formed in 2009, Harmony Sinfonia is a vibrant symphony orchestra
performing three concerts a year and promoting classical music to
audiences within the borough of Lewisham and its neighbouring
boroughs. Offering a performance platform for both local amateur
players of a high standard and music students from local
universities, Harmony Sinfonia also strives to promote
contemporary orchestral music by local composers and will feature
some of these works in future performances. The orchestra also aims
to work with local music services to provide performance
opportunities to school pupils of an advanced standard, and is
currently developing an outreach programme with local schools.
