Mountains of the World Everybody knows what a mountain looks like but nobody can agree on a definition of what a mountain really is. Most geographers agree that it must be a big piece of land with sloping sides sticking out from the land around it. Some say it must be at least 1000m above sea level to count as a mountain, so we don’t actually have any mountains in England (though Scotland and Wales do). Even the Scottish and Welsh mountains are tiny compared to others in the world. Label the following mountain ranges and the highest mountains on the map; also add the names of the 7 continents (you can use an atlas, or the map in your planner): Mountain Range Rockies Andes Alps Himalayas Urals Atlas Great Dividing Range Transantarctic Mountains Mountain Mt. McKinley Aconcagua Mt. Blanc Mt. Everest Vinson Massif Puncak Jaya Mt. Kilimanjaro Mt. All of the top 100 highest mountains can be found in Asia within and around the Himalayas! Measured from its base in the Pacific Ocean, Mauna Kea in Hawaii is the world’s tallest mountain at a huge 10,203m sea level If you are struggling see your Geography teacher or go to homework club. Use this page to label the mountains (see previous page for instructions) Extension Task: Think about how people are spread out on Earth. Why do you think the Alps are the busiest mountains? If you are struggling see your Geography teacher or go to homework club. Mountain Climate Mountains have unique climates; for every 100m you go up in height, the temperature drops by about 1°C so many mountain areas are cold all year round. Above a certain height, mountains will have snow all year round; these ice caps are known as glaciers. Below is some climate data for Innsbruck in the Austrian Alps. On the next page draw a climate graph for Innsbruck. A climate graph is 2 graphs in one: a BAR CHART for PRECIPITATION and a LINE GRAPH for TEMPERATURE. Climate Data: Innsbruck, Austria Months J F M Temperature (°C) -3 -1 5 Precipitation (mm) 54 49 41 A 10 52 M 14 73 J J A 17 19 18 110 134 108 S 15 81 O 10 67 N 4 53 D -1 46 1) Use an atlas to describe Innsbruck’s location: _________________________________ 2) Which month is the wettest in Innsbruck? ____________________________________ 3) Which month is the driest in Innsbruck? ______________________________________ 4) Which month is the coldest in Innsbruck? _____________________________________ 5) Which month is the warmest in Innsbruck? ___________________________________ 6) What is the total precipitation for Innsbruck in a year? ___________________mm 7) What is the temperature range (max – min) for Innsbruck? ________________°C 8) Look again at the winter months, what might the precipitation be? __________ 9) Extension Task: For somebody who lives in Innsbruck, how might a climate like this affect their lifestyle? Describe it and how it has adapted to live in the mountains. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ If you are struggling see your Geography teacher or go to homework club. Living in the Mountains As you have seen, mountains are very harsh and remote places to live, yet some people manage to survive and make a living there. Countries including Nepal, Bolivia, Iran, Switzerland are very mountainous; Japan is 90% mountains! Read the following text about the Sherpa people of Nepal and answer the questions on the next page: “The Sherpa people live in the Himalayas (the highest mountains on Earth), within the country of Nepal. They are well known all over the world as expert mountain climbers and guides. Possibly the most famous Sherpa was Tenzing Norgay who helped Sir Edmund Hillary to make the first ascent of Mt. Everest in 1953. Since then Sherpas have guided many climbers to top of Mt. Everest and numerous other mountains. “Sherpas have lived in the mountains for generations, and so their bodies have adapted to the high altitude and lack of oxygen. They tend to be short and stocky which helps them to resist the cold. The have extra red blood cells for carrying more oxygen around their bodies, and some even have larger lungs. People who live in lowland areas often suffer from altitude sickness at about 2,400m above sea level; in fact many climbers need to take oxygen tanks to reach the top of mountains like Mt. Everest. As well as being used to the mountains and the conditions, Sherpas tend not to suffer from altitude sickness so they often act as porters to carry climbers’ bags whilst they struggle with tiredness, blurred vision and headaches. “Most Sherpas follow an old form of Buddhism as their religion. They believe that numerous gods and demons inhabit every mountain, cave or forest. Many of the Himalayan Mountains are worshipped as gods; Sherpas call Mt. Everest Chomolungma (Mother of the World). Each separate village recognise different mountains as protective gods. This means that they do their best to protect the environment and the mountains from damage and pollution. “Sherpas traditionally relied on farming to make a living, but now increasingly they get their money from tourism associated with mountain climbing. Their way of life may be changing but they are keen to hang on to their traditions.” If you are struggling see your Geography teacher or go to homework club. Why are Sherpas good people to employ as mountain guides for foreign tourists? ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ How have the Sherpas’ bodies adapted to high altitude? ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Why would it be difficult for somebody who lives at close to sea-level to climb a mountain in the Himalayas like Mt. Everest? ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Why do you think that the Sherpas get angry when people leave litter on the mountains? ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Why would the Sherpas not stop people visiting their mountains? ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Extension Task: How does the Sherpas’ religion affect their attitude to the environment? If you are struggling see your Geography teacher or go to homework club. Tourism in the Mountains Your final task is to look at tourism in the mountains and decide whether it is a good or bad thing. Read the information below about the Chamonix ski resort in the French Alps: If you are struggling see your Geography teacher or go to homework club. Below are the benefits and problems of ski resorts like Chamonix: Winter Wonderland? Some ski resorts are not getting enough snow any more because of Global Warming. Ski companies are now applying to build new ski resorts higher up in the mountains. Using all the information you have learnt in this booklet, plus any of your own research answer the following question: ‘In your opinion should ski companies be allowed to build new ski resorts higher up in the mountains?’ Answer on the following pages or use ICT. Use the level descriptions below to help you meet your target level. 1 2 3 Includes own opinion and gives reasons for this using information straight from the booklet, one sided. Gives balanced views for and against new ski resorts to explain their own opinion and includes information from the booklet about why mountains should be protected. Looks at both sides in detail, with reasons and suggests alternatives to building new ski resorts higher in the mountains.
