Objectives
To measure progress and understanding of limiting factors in photosynthesis.
To measure the understanding of how photosynthesis affects growth.
To assess the ability to evaluate the yield benefits of manipulating the conditions in which plants grow.
To assess ability to interpret graphical / numerical data of factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis.
Task. ( watch before youhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOJDQXOBEIw&feature=related )
Changing the conditions in which plants photosynthesise affects how fast they grow.
The diagram represents a glasshouse in
which market gardeners can control or
manipulate temperature, light intensity
and carbon dioxide concentration.
Heating is achieved by thermostatically
controlled electrical fan heaters, whilst
carbon dioxide levels can be increased using
gas (methane) burners.
The graph shows the effects of
changing the temperature,
light intensity and
carbon dioxide concentration
on the growth of lettuce plants.
Task 0ne
Interpret the data from the graph for 0.03% CO2 at 25°C and 15°C.
TOP TIP remember to use your
understanding of independent and dependent variables .
Identify the limiting factor for photosynthesis in each of the trends for the two graphs.
Explain how you knew which was factor limiting the rate of photosynthesis and which was not.
Task Two
The sisters who run the market garden have different opinions about the way to produce the maximum
yield of lettuce. Both agree that the higher the yield the greater the potential maximum profits.
Helen argues that growing lettuce at light intensity 6 arbitrary units ( 4% CO2 ; 15°C ) would be
most profitable.
Becca disagrees. She thinks that growing lettuce at light intensity 9 arbitrary units ( 4% CO2 ; 25°C ) would
produce the most lettuce and so be most profitable.
Evaluate each statement taking account of each statement, your knowledge of limiting factors and the
comparative cost of the energy resources needed for heating, lighting and the provision of carbon dioxide.
Complete the evaluation by producing an evidence based conclusion that argues which conditions would be the
most effective in growing lettuce profitably.
A f L checklist (general)
Tick / cross
I have made a list of the key words that relate to the scientific objective.
I have checked my work for the correct use of English.
I have identified the independent variable (s).
I have described the patterns or relationships from the graph.
I have identified the limiting factors in each trend of the graphs.
I have said how I identified the limiting factors.
I have produced an evaluation of the views of the market gardeners.
I have demonstrated I understand the link between photosynthesis and growth.
I have produced a scientifically reasoned conclusion to complete my evaluation.
I have produced a reasoned discussion relating to the cost of the energy recourses against
lettuce yield.
Describe the relationship between the independent and dependent variable for both ‘graphs’.
Identify all limiting factors from in the graph and say how you identified these.
A*
Evaluate the statements using clear, well reasoned science and produce a conclusion based on in depth evidence
using both an understanding of limiting factors and possible costs of energy recourses. This conclusion should
contain a discussion relating to the competing priorities between energy costs and lettuce yield or productivity in
maximising profit.
Describe the relationship between the independent and dependent variable for both ‘graphs’.
A
Identify all limiting factors from in the graph and say how you identified these.
Evaluate the statements using clear, well reasoned science and produce a conclusion based on evidence using both
an understanding of limiting factors and possible costs of energy recourses.
Describe the relationship between the independent and dependent variable for both ‘graphs’.
B
Identify most limiting factors from in the graph and say how you identified these.
Evaluate the statements using clear, reasoned science and produce a conclusion based on evidence.
Describe the relationship between the independent and dependent variable for at least one ‘graph’.
C
Identify some limiting factors from the graph and say how you identified this.
Evaluate the statements using clear, but basic science and produce a conclusion based on limited evidence.
